If I would be asked for my opinion on that picture, I would say that it's certainly well done, even though I don't understand the desire to see a female Turian in the first place, and I certainly don't find the result appealing on a romantic level. But that's just me, I never understood this interest in that kind of romances anyway, and yes, I do believe it's a different thing with the Asari.

I would like to see female variations of the other species. No not because I wanna romance them (I got Liara!) but simply because the lack of female turians, salarians and krogans is slightly immersion breaking. And immersion is perhaps one of the most important thing in ANY game.who focus on more than gameplay.

I understand that opinion and perspective. Along with the drell, the asari were designed with Shepard being able to romance them in mind. Both Liara and Thane were created with romance in mind, Liara to obviously provide a xenophiliac romance in ME1, and Thane to appeal to heterosexual female gamers. They're characters who had romance incorporated into their design process.

That's not really the case with the other non-human romances.

Yeah, obviously. Imagine if BioWare reveal how the Quarians look, and it goes against the expectations of some of their fans. What MDK experienced, would be nothing against it, I guess. That said, I still find it hard to believe that Drell would appeal to many women. On the other hand, I have no idea how I would design an alien species that does. Probably close to a human resemblance, but with some exotic features. Like the Asari, indeed.

Yes, I do agree with that.

Yeah, it could be a huge freak out...it's probably better if they never reveal what they look like.

I'm more curious to see what the volus look like myself.

@MDK

I remember that WIP...very nice!  Looking forward to the finished product.

Apparently, when the BioWare artists were designing Thane's appearance they kept showing him to female employees in the offices to gauge just how much he was appealing to heterosexual women. They attempted to make him as appealing as possible. Like the asari, Thane and the drell are fanservice.

I'm fine with the asari and by extension Liara being fanservice though. It doesn't bother me, and it's not necessarily a bad thing.

There's nothing wrong with fanservice. What is wrong, is when the only reason they are there IS fanservice. Which is why I loath Thane to say the least.

MDK, if I have one small piece of advice for that WIP, it's that Liara's breasts may be a shade too big. Other than that, though, it's absolutely flawless. Looking forward to seeing the finished version!

Bioware could have had it so easy with Tali...just show her dead father without helmet...then everyone would have saw a Quarian but not Tali already (because nearly no one is actually thinking how quarians look...they all just think about how Tali might look)....and with that picture of a quarian, all fans would have started imagining Tali based on that...way easier then to please people...because ya already have a solid basic image to build on.

Anyway....turning around the topic of my post 100%:
I gotta admit I find it kinda sad that Asari dont wear glasses...or that no one in Mass effect actually does...cause I love women with glasses (thats why that deviantart pic with Liara and glasses is still ym favorite me fan pic)

Not to get OT, but isn't there a pretty good description of a quarian's face in Revelation? The ME novel?

Glasses suit Liara absolutely perfectly.

Just like her labcoat. The perfect way of showcasing her considerable intelligence.

Pitty that they didin't consider do fanservice when they were thinking in the Liara story for ME2 perhaps we would all be a litle happier.

No, it's very vague, with no details. It only describes that they have fingers, eyes, teeth, and something that passes as ears.

Fan service? How could the Asari have been fan service, when there were no fans in the beginning? It would have been fan service to give Liara a proper role in ME 2, that would have been fan service. <_<

No, their design was the result of logic. Commercial logic, because they figured popular romances would increase the popularity of the game. And human logic, because for that the artists had to make the LI appealing to the average male and/or female players. No idea if that really worked out with the Drell, but it certainly did with the Asari. ^_^

Gotcha. Couldn't remember, it's been awhile since I read that book.

And Geordi La Forge's Visor didn't need ears, so Liara could still pull off glasses. Though I am sure everyone just got laser surgery by then.

bjd, what you've just described regarding making the asari appealing IS fanservice. You don't need an existing fanbase in order to create fanservice. When something is created in order to be attractive or appealing to players or viewers, then it is fanservice. I have no problem with that, as long as there is a far greater depth to the character than that, which is obviously the case with Liara.

BioWare said "make sexy blue space women who can have sex with anything and be romanceable because that is what our [male] fans will want. Also, make them strippers. And make it make sense."

The asari are a fanservice race. Fanservice is not innately a bad thing. Tali and Garrus in ME2 are also fanservice. Devs have said as much. They made them romances to show that "they were listening to the fans."

It's not a big deal either way, seeing as lengths have been made to flesh out these races and characters.

Of course, people sometimes forget games are designed, and *everything* within a game is designed to appeal to specific demographics. Everything. If you like something it's because it was designed for you to.

It's just more culturally obvious with some things.

Exactly, Icca. For the record, I love Thane's character. Him being fanservice does not make him bad in any way at all.
