In the real world, it's all about preference.. but here it's like j said.. haters will be haters.

To answer the question about some people not finding Liara attractive, it's largely because she's not human (I don't find the maliens physically attractive either--just their voices) and I have something of a hair fixation. But no, Liara certainly isn't ugly.

I know this is off topic, kind of, but I just played Knights of the Old Republic for the first time. I hear Ballista and Revan mentioned on the forums from time to time, especially there being a comparison between Bastilla and Liara. After playing KotOR, I can see some similarities between the two. Although I had been spoiled on what happened to Bas, I didn't have a clue about Revan until well into the game. Anyway, back to Liara worshiping.

EDIT: I also mention it for the fact that I hear a lot of people saying, "I hope they don't pull a Revan" w/ Shepard.  Didn't have a clue as to what that was until now.  Anyway, count me in the party that hopes they don't too.

(SPOILERS for both Neverwinter Nights and Knights of the Old Republic)

Ariebeth is an elven paladin knight in Neverwinter Nights.  She begins as a paladin, guiding the player character through about half of the game, but then becomes one of the main antagonists later on. 

Ballista, similarly, guides the PC in KotOR and is by all accounts a good Jedi, but is impulsive.  She is later turned to the dark side and the PC must confront her near the end of the game.  Both can be redeemed, but unlike Bastilla, Ariebeth dies either way.
 
Both games were made and written by BioWare and the characters share very similar traits, thus Aribastilla.  Liara’s transformation to an “edgier” side in ME2 is reminiscent of the two other characters. like Aribeth, Liara's transformation is sudden, though her character, like Bastilla, is much more complex.  Bastilla is voiced by Jennifer Hale, who does femShep.

Fortunately you can still have a happy end with Aribeth. BioWare redeemed themself in my view with HotU, after the mediocre OC. I just hope they'll provide a happy end with Liara, and redeem themself again, with ME 3.
