Okay this always bugged me.
People say that the FemShep-Liara romance is same sex, when technically it's xenophilic.
Nothing against the same-sex idea but I'm a stickler for proper classification.

Actually xenophillic would apply equally - that term describes the species aspect of it, rather than the gender one.

Yes but the Heterosexual-Homosexual dynamic we are used to is useless to a species that only has one gender.
Case in point:
Techinically under that system Liara is Bisexual.
But Gender really doesn't have much of a meaning to her so for her at least it fits better to say xenophillic.

Yeah, not having it happen in real life - it's left to us to define it.

Most people accept the in-game codex and accept asari as all female. It's odd - it's a same-sex romance, for only one of the partners.

Though as to us they appear female, and are identified as such with words such as "she", "hers", etc. - we just use the term from force of habit.

I can see where you're coming from though ^_^

I could just imagine a spacer FemShep visiting home to tell mom about her LI.
*thinks about it*
Shep: Hi mom!
Mom: Oh Shepard.
Liara: *thinking to herself* Even Shepard's mother doesn't refer to her by her first name? Now that is odd!
*awkward hilarity ensues*

Here's another thing I've noticed.

A lot of people want most of the LI's to go both ways.

But it doesn't make sense for the majority of them.

Jack-I could see happening.

Garrus-Not a chance.

Tali-maybe.

Samara-Fits.

Liara-Technically fits.

Asaris are bi from a human POV. They don´t reproduce sexually, though.

Jack is in her backstory, but that was more to show how broken she was IMO.

Kelly is Jack Harkness in female.

Femshep if you play like that.

Any other?

Not Ashley or Kaidan.
Not Jacob or Garrus.
Not Thane or Miranda?
I don't think Tali either.

I think people just want all LIs to be available to all Shepards. I can see where they're coming from - some people prefer to always play as a specific gender, but want to experience certain romances.

The easiest way would be to have them only show interest in a Shepard of the same gender if said Shepard made the first move. That way, they could simply say that the characters are straight, and only go the other way if the player wants them to.

I know people say that would hurt the integrity of the characters, but as has been pointed out - if they didn't want to access the content, they don't have to.

It's already been stated that at least some of the ME2 LIs were meant to be available to both genders. In fact, judging by the dialogue people have found - all of them were.

I can see that with Tali.
There's kind of an "awkward she likes you but doens't think it's okay" instead of the MalShep "gosh I like you"
But the cut it.

A while ago on the Mass Effect livejournal community we were contacted by someone who had worked on the game - who shall of course remain anonymous - they said that the writers were very keen to have the same-sex romances kept in the game, but they were vetoed by someone high-up in the ME2 production team.

Really was a shame, but I guess they didn't want to offend people.

Still - at least we still have Liara :)

Yep.
Ahh I remember the ME controversy.
Do you remember that?
Ahhh those were the good days!

ME has a more mainstream target audience than DA:O, and even there they made the real silly love scenes in underwear. The lack of different body designs didn´t help either (one for each race and sex), which also happens in ME (FShep, Ash and Liara neck down).

It´s nothing new either, in Jade Empire they censored the m-m/f-f kiss.

Why are you even discussing the other possible S/S romances in here? Take it to the FFTL thread. To be on topic, Liara might not be a lesbian in some people's eyes but Femshep is definitely a lesbian if she is attracted to Liara.

Agreed. The whole "she's doesn't have sex" and "asaris are all female just with the possibility of a penis" means she's just a lesbian. Thsi was Bioware's way of introducing a lesbian without getting people mad "BISEXUALITY! THIS IS AN OUTRAGE!" probably why I have her as an LI in two of 4 plathroughs ;)

FShep can be lesbian, bi or straight.

What about Jade Empire?
Or that tiny bit with Juhani in Kotor?

They are games more than 2 years old Darth.

More seriously, Juhani was a blink and miss moment ( I remember thinking whether I had heard what she said right) and it seems JE is not that popular (storywise is still my favorite Bioware game and twist).

More than 2 years old is a big time difference to you?
God I'm old.

Not for me, was joking. But it seems to be for a lot of people. Nowadays games seem like blockbuster movies. Hit as hard as possible in the first weeks and forget about them.

I´m not that young either.

What do you think her reaction would be when she meets Shepard in ME3? This time outside her office? Would it be more open or rather passionate?

It had better be passionate!  Bioware needs to make up for that awful kiss.  The non-romance hug was more affectionate than the kiss.
