My soldier Shepard have a tendency to use a SMG in cutscenes, despite never ever having one in-game.
Untrue. I've only just completed the game with my Adept Shepard, and not once did she use her SMG in cutscenes, despite the fact that they're one of her weapon proficiencies.Tali wields her SMG the same Shepard holds his pistol during the confrontation with Zaeed if Vido escapes.
Utter cobblers. Squaddies never use SMGs in cutscenes.Garrus wields his sniper rifle like Shepard holds his shotgun during the lsat cutscene in the N7 mission where you have to rescue a injured quarian.
Really? I don't remember squaddies being featured in that final cutscene. All I remember is Shepard kicking an attacking varren whilst standing inside the shuttle.
Shepard and squadmates does use SMG's in cutscenes.
Gimme a few minutes and I'll capture some screenshot during the game where that happens.

If you'll recall, there's a mercenary in Garrus' recruitment mission who holds and fires a grenade launcher from his hip during a cutscene. From what I can tell, it's the same animated posture that Garrus has.
Exactly. During a cutscene. An animation that has been reused for the purposes of creating said screenshot, and to insert Garrus' sniper rifle into his hands in order to insure that the image is visually appealing.

Exactly. Shepard also wields a shotgun that way in the end cutscene of "rescue the injuired Qurian" N7 mission.
And Tali uses the same posture like Shepard does when you gun down the injured krogan in Mordin's loyalty mission or in the paragon ending of Zaeed's loyalty mission.
I've just completed the damn game with my Adept Shepard. I would have noticed if she were holding her pistol like a shotgun in an incredibly derpy manner, or using a shotgun which she is not in possession of.

Alright, to be clear, I think I should point out that on review of the subject in question, I will conceed that Bioware do in fact tweak things a little to get more interesting-looking screenshots for the site. However, I still stand by my opinion that I do not think Bioware would alter things to the level of where it appears we have a fourth squadmate.
Why not? They'd do anything for the purposes of marketing, including ignoring the the fact that Shepard can be a woman altogether.

I want visual proof. My Shepard happens to be equipped with the Tempest, a large SMG that would be extremely noticeable in cutscenes. Not once did I see her wielding one.

If Bioware were to put the amount of thought into something as simple as a promotional screenshot, then I would think it would be formatted into a wallpaper. None of the others appear to have been given special treatment. The one where Liara is talking with Shepard in the background is obviously from a cutscene. I don't see why this one can't be as well.
I would be giddy for the chance to have Garrus, Tali and Liara on my squad at the same time, but I don't think it would be the realistic message to take away from the screenshot.
I suppose we'll find out soon enough.

My Inflitrator uses the locust instead of her pistol

Promotional image discussion aside, has there been another time when Bioware have tweaked things to a comparable degree before? Because I'm going by Bioware's reputation, and as I understand it right now, the reputation says they wouldn't pull something like this for screenshot marketing.

I'm not suggesting that this screenshot is evidence that Shepard will be accompanied by three squadmates for the duration of the Liara DLC. I am merely pointing out that a unique image has been created for the purposes of invoking nostalgia in the player, and for visual and promotional purposes.

The image posted above for the purposes of promoting the alternate appearence pack. Thane happens to be using one of his unique cutscene animations outside of the situation in which it is used.

Les, Tali uses a SMG when she confronts Legion after you do both there missions and my Soldier Shepard used a SMG a couple of times.
A unique inter-squadmate confrontation, and one featuring concerning Shepard and not squadmates.

Les, this is the Shuriken and is used by Shepard sometimes, including Tali in cutscenes.

Alright, I suppose that might be a reasonable possibility. I still doubt it, personally. But all either of us can do is guess at this point.

Though the alt. pack doesn't really have any gameplay.
Exactly, and using Thane's character model a unique screenshot has been created for aesthetic purposes, one that is not derived from any situation presented in-game.

Here's a screenshot of my soldier Shepard using the shuriken smg, if y ou look closely then you can see that Miranda is pulling forth her tempest smg.
