I also think Liara will be a temporary squadmate, maybe even the third squadmate perhaps? (they did say they were trying to create some new gameplay mechanic inside the game).
That's one theory. I've listed them all before, except I didn't include the Les screenshot manip theory!

I'l list them again (for fun!):
- Liara will be a squad mate for the mission. The game engine has been tweaked to allow a 4 person squad plus Shepard, so Liara takes up the extra spot, and is like any other squad mate (the player can issue commands to her and can control her power usage).
- Liara will be a squad mate for the mission, but in the typical 3 person squad. The Shepard + Liara + Tali + Garrus screen is a hack used to grab the screen shot that would evoke the most ME1 nostalgia out of us. The player really will only be allowed to select one other person besides Liara, similar to the loyalty missions.
- Liara will not be a squad mate for the mission, but will be present during all the combat. This would be similar to Garrus' recruitment mission, where he is there aiding the squad in combat, but the player cannot issue orders to him or use his powers.
- Liara will not be a squad mate for the mission, and will not follow Shepard's squad, but will be off doing her own thing, possibly even leading her own squad (as Master Wolf mentioned earlier). This is similar to the second fire team on the suicide mission, except we may see more of Liara fighting in cutscenes than what we see of the other teams during the suicide mission.
I'm leaning towards '4' right now. I'm not sure about '3'....this worked with Garrus, given that he's first and foremost a sniper, and he aided Shepard and Co. by sniping. Liara is first and foremost a biotics user. I doubt they will have her using bitoics powers that the player cannot control. She could just use her pistol to help out, but that would be kind of dumb, given how powerful of a biotic she is.
'2' is another strong possibility, the only problem is that damn screenshot with Shepard/Liara/Tali/Garrus.
'1' could happen, but I have no clue how difficult it would be to implement this, and would it be worthy to do so for a DLC? I do know they are working on changes for ME3 ('Project Wombat') and this could be a 4 person squad....perhaps they will roll it out in ME2 DLC first? I don't know.
