This is true...the only thing characters like Liara/Ash/Kaidan/Wrex have in common is that they were not squad mates again in ME2.  What happens with Liara is independent of the VS survivor story and the Wrex storyline.

Exactly, and we're already beginning to see that in effect right now. Liara has a clearly defined story role with her current connection to the Shadow Broker, and her role in recovering Shepard's body to hand over to Cerberus. However, Ashley or Kaidan are kinda left up in the air, and the only story role they serve in ME2 is to lure the Collectors to Horizon. Otherwise, the pair are kinda left up in the air and there is not really that much material dedicated to either one of them, which is not the case with Liara. Already, we are beginning to see their respective storylines diverge and take on varying levels of importance. Wrex's future story role has been pretty much telegraphed, IMO.

I still have a feeling that Liara is being set up to become a plot critical non-squad mate npc in ME3, along with Wrex (with Wrex to a lesser extent as he could be dead), and both will not be joining Shepard as a squad mate.  The VS will be a squad mate again, though.

I agree with your sentiments that there is a possibility that Liara may be a non-squadmate plot critical NPC in ME3, but why are you so certain that Ashley or Kaidan will be a squadmate in the third game? If anything, Liara has a far greater chance of being a squaddie in the third game, and it's very easy to think up a scenario in which the pair will play a non-squadmate NPC role. For example, if they have succeeded Shepard as human Spectre and Anderson's protege, is it not possible that they could act as a liason between Shepard and the Council/Alliance, in order to regain their trust for the upcoming war against the Reaper fleet?

I'm extremely confident that both Liara and the surviving Alliance soldier will be squaddies again in ME3, but I don't think one is more likely that the other. After all, they both enjoy the exact same plot immunity and are both surviving ME1 love interests.

That's just my hunch...they saved Liara not so she can be a squad mate in ME3, but b/c they have larger plans for her character.  I know most Liara fans do not want to hear something like this, but I'm just throwing it out there as a possibility.  The upcoming DLC may shed some light on this, though.

Agreed that it's a distinct possibility, though I don't mind hearing it as I'm prepared for anything, if it's done well. :P Of course, the Liara DLC may shed some light as to what her future role may be.

I don't think Liara will be a playable character in the DLC because if she was then you'd likely be able to ues her for sidequest missons in ME2 which would make the game confusing. I also doubt the devs will make changes to the Normandy in a DLC but I do expect it for ME3. I think this DLC will set the stage for Liara's return.

I happen to believe that she will be a temporary squadmate for the duration of her DLC, and that the stage will be set for her return as a squadmate in ME3 via her rejoining the Normandy as a non-squadmate NPC. She may even reside in Shepard's cabin if she is your LI, as you have speculated. There has also been a semi-confimation that this DLC pack will alter the game outside of the self-contained DLC mission, and this could possibly indicate changes to the Normandy being made in order to facilitate Liara's return. This will only be possible if the content is post-suicide mission though, as most believe. However, it is also just as likely that a simple explanation will be given at the conclusion of the DLC for Liara temporarily not rejoining the Normandy, with her promising to do so ASAP and which sets up her recruitment in ME3. That is also a distinct possibility.

I do speculate that when it gets to the point where there is the opportunity to dispose of the SB that Shepard will have the option of telling Liara there are more important things in life like the love they share or something to that effect which will transition Liara to Shepard's cabin on the Normandy in ME3.

I agree that there will be some kind of "talk down" scenario with Liara upon confronting the Shadow Broker, however I believe it will be that Shepard comforts her and convinces Liara that killing and eradicating the Shadow Broker will not result in her happiness, and relieve her of the pain, despair and guilt that she has endured for the past two years. I believe that will be the Charm/Paragon option, at least.

You'll loot 20 more credits from the wall safe in the Shadow Broker's quarters if you gave him the Cerberus data in ME1.

It would have been interesting if the Shadow Broker attempted to use the favour it promised to owe Shepard as a bargaining chip upon inevitably confronting it, or even informed Liara of the fact that Shepard sold the data to it in order to attempt to create distrust between the pair, which I'm sure Liara would be immune to, but there is no flag at all. It's been completely dropped, unfortunately.

It's strange, though. We've been eagerly anticipating the release of this DLC ever since late January, when ME2 hit store shelves. However, due to that fact, we have pretty much exhausted all speculative discussion pertaining to Liara or her DLC, and therefore do not really have much to talk about even though the DLC has at last been confirmed.

I'm sure that discussion and speculation will reach fever pitch once we get more information relating to the DLC, however. If there are indications, perhaps in the trailer, that there will be deep, emotional interaction with Liara, or that the romance is featured in a substantial way, or that Liara may rejoin the Normandy at the conclusion of her DLC, then this thread will go into meltdown!

Hey Erin!

Hmmm, Liara's old labcoat design used to be quite subtly different, even after they altered it from it's previous all-white colour. I love how it appeared in the final version of the game, though!

I go back and forth on whether I think Liara will be recruitable. Right now, I'm leaning toward her being the main quest giver/funder, like TIM and the Council.I do think she's more likely than the VS because they have been set up as interchangeable despite very different personalities.

Agreed, both outcomes are plausible and, if done well, could be a satisfying and compelling continuation and conclusion to Liara's character arc and her romance. As has been said before, the Liara DLC will most probably provide insight into Liara's future role.

I remain confident that she will be a squadmate, however!

About the squad mate thing, squad mates are usually not all that plot critical. There are a few exceptions (Liara herself in ME1, Mordin in ME2), but most are just bodies sitting around for Shepard to take on missions, and they do not have much affect on the story. This, of course, makes sense as it is unknown which squad mates Shepard will have on any given mission.

If they want Liara to have some grand plot critical role and they have been saving her for this, they may also keep her out of the squad, so they have more 'control' over her character, so to speak. They are limited with what they can do with squad mates. Of course, one route they could go is to have Liara as a squad mate for only part of the game, and not the other.

If other former squad mates aren't going to be as plot critical, I think they may have more of a chance of being in the ME3 squad. Wrex may be another example of a character that has a plot critical role (leader of the krogan) and, thus, does not make into ME3 as a squad mate. The Virmire Survivor could go either way...we don't know enough about what they plan for them. ME2 squad mates probably won't be plot critical in ME3...the only ones I can think that may are Tali or Legion....possibly Miranda.

Mordin as well (genophage cure) And isn't it interesting that Tali, Legion, and Mordin are the easiest squad mates to miss/kill?

You speak alot of sense and I agree with everything you've said here, J. However, a plot-critical role and squadmate status aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. I also happen to believe that Liara is the character in which this is most likely to occur, given that she will have experienced three game's worth of character development and interaction with Shepard and will therefore be familiar with her, and that she is the only squadmate guaranteed to be alive for the trilogy's finale. To me, that suggests that Liara could have a great chance of occupying an important, plot-critical role and squadmate status. Due to her heavy plot armour, logic dictates that BW will focus a large amount of development time, resources and attention on her, which bodes well for her future story role and character development.

Tomorrow, jtav, tomorrow. Alot of people are speculating that more information regarding Liara's DLC could be released tomorrow, as it is something of a standard to release information related to new products on Tuesdays.

Please, try to avoid a nervous breakdown. Do it for Liara!

While I didn't lose my team in ME2, I would most definitely welcome the addition of Liara.
