She is slowly becoming the thing she hunts then.

I'm not sure what other options she would have had, though. I assume Benezia had very powerful connections, especially with other Matriarchs....she could have appealed to them possibly. I doubt they would want to get involved in something like this, though.

The Council obviously doesn't see the SB as a that big of a threat, as they just let it go about it's business, even though the SB may be considered a 'criminal' by C-Sec (according to that cut audio). It's not like they are sending Spectre's out to take the SB's criminal network down.

Now, Cerberus is a possibility too, considering that Liara helped them to obtain Shepard in spite of not receiving any reward from them for doing so. They also seem to be antagonistic towards the SB. However, we know that Cerberus' resources are limited, especially considering all the credits they just poured into Shepard.

So, it seems Liara really has no one to turn to, and really has no other choice but to immerse herself in the SB's world.

The problem with this is, what if Shepard finds the Shadow Broker's location for her, after only being awake for 1 month? It would mean everything Liara did was for nothing, since Shepard did it without much problem. Even worse if they just run and gun the Shadow down in one night.

I can't really imagine how else you could track down the shadow broker other than by information brokering, it's not like you could just go to his HQ and start gunning down henchmen until he shows up, Sheperd style. And after you find the Cerberus data in ME1 one of the SB's agents rings you up and pretty much says "Can I please have that info?", so it doesn't seem all that difficult, Liara could easily intimidate people into giving up information, she seems to have Benezia's threatening genes.
Where you start such a business, however, I have no idea.

I'm not even 100% certain what the nature of the business really is.  I would guess that one aspect of this business is in contacting other Info Brokers to buy/sell/trade information.  In addition, Liara would sell information to clients coming in off the streets who are not in the biz.  While keeping the business profitable in this manner, she would also have to spend some resources in her hunt for the SB which is why, as Nyxeris states, Liara isn't nearly as powerful as she could be.

To even get started in the business, I assume you would have to have some juicy info to sell to another broker or use in exchange for another piece of juicy info.

If she did keep a copy of the SB's data cache, that may explain how she ammassed a sizable pool of credits in order to kick off her business successfully.  I'm sure it contained information that was worth a small fortune to others.

Yeah, I really hope that doesn't happen, as that would be the second time something like that happened to Liara.  See:  Shepard discovering the true fate of the Protheans by accidently stepping too close to a beacon.

How? Liara has a very clearly defined series of goals and motivations. The SB is in the business for it's own benefit. Liara merely sees the world of intrigue and espionage as the most effective way of harming it's empire, and stopping the Shadow Broker. The SB wants to make money, and does so on the back of a substantial amount of pain and misery. Liara wants to end the Shadow Broker, and absolutely hates the more abhorrent aspects to working as an info broker.

I'm not sure what other options she would have had, though. I assume Benezia had very powerful connections, especially with other Matriarchs....she could have appealed to them possibly. I doubt they would want to get involved in something like this, though.

Yeah, doubtful. As I said, I feel that working as an information broker is most effective and most realistic way in which she can eradicate and stop the Shadow Broker. As you said, it is unlikely that the asari Matriarchs would want to get involced in something like this. Liara has been left alone, of course, and she does mention that she has few friends in ME2.

The Council obviously doesn't see the SB as a that big of a threat, as they just let it go about it's business, even though the SB may be considered a 'criminal' by C-Sec (according to that cut audio). It's not like they are sending Spectre's out to take the SB's criminal network down.

I believe that the Council allow the Shadow Broker to operate as it maintains the political status quo across the entire galaxy. I believe that we are informed at one point during ME1 that the Shadow Broker never allows one political organisation to gain an advantage over the other, which results in the SB being in constant demand and therefore increasing it's own wealth. As a result, the Citadel Council allows the Shadow Broker to operate as it ensures that it's authority as a governing body over most species and Council space is maintained.

Maybe, but I think that both TIM and Cerberus are a little too preoccupied with funding Shepard's mission to stop the Collectors and end their abductions of human colonies to become involved in a fullscale manhunt for the Shadow Broker. In addition, a vast amount of credits have just been spent funding the Lazarus Project and the construction of the SR-2. Cerberus resources are spread thin. I'm sure TIM finds the idea of his chief rival in the information field being eliminated quite appealing, though.

So, it seems Liara really has no one to turn to, and really has no other choice but to immerse herself in the SB's world.

Exactly, she has no other option, and her methods also happen to be the most effective, I feel.

I still do not see how this means she is becoming the thing she hunts though, J. Once the SB is dealt with, she's leaving the profession behind.

Shepard: Well Liara, what did we learn?

Liara: That life is horrible?

Shepard: No. That you can't do **** by just sitting around, studying. Just grab a gun, and beat the living **** out of people. After all, it solves all problems!

This. That is why I would absolutely hate it if Cerberus or whoever contact you regarding the SB's location. It cheapens and trivialises Liara's whole hunt. I'd much prefer it if Liara were to contact you herself, after she has made a significant breakthrough. This would then, obvious, trigger the beginning of the DLC.

Hmm...maybe.   I don't mean she is becoming the thing she hunts exactly, not Liara = SB.  But she has definitely immersed herself in this world in order to understand it more, and to understand the SB more...this will have had a lasting effect on her.  It's going to change her, and she cannot go back to being the same as she was two years ago.

Maybe I should say she is becoming a bit like that who she hunts.

Ah, I understand. I also happen to agree. Through working as an information broker, Liara has become exposed to the dirty, corrupt, seedy underside of the galaxy. This has resulted in her losing alot of her idealism and worldliness, and in turn she has become quite jaded and cynical. Couple that with the manner in which she has suffered over the last two years, and Liara's naivety has all but evaporated.

I'm just not sure if she can leave it all behind so easily...we shall see (hopefully soon) what they have planned for her.

She can leave her current occupation behind, sure, but her emotional scars will endure, sadly enough.

Oh, I still think Liara will be the one to contact you (she does have your email afterall). She is the only one looking for the SB...there are no indications that Cerberus or TIM is. Though, in that accursed cut audio, it is Cerberus who gives Shep the SB location first....I really hope this doesn't happen for real.

That's the only thing that makes me slightly nervous. I really hope that aspect of the dialogue isn't repurposed and implemented. As I said before, I want Liara to make the key breakthrough in her hunt for the Shadow Broker, and not have Shepard stumble upon the answers yet again, and in the process invalidate Liara's work.

Liara: You have no right to judge me! I had to sacrifice! I had to lie! I had to kill! All to survive and to take down the Shadow Broker! And you think I could just find him like that -

Shepard: Oh yeah, I was looking through a garbage can the other day, and noticed a crumpled note. It seemed to be a printed email, that had the address of the Shadow Broker on it... Want to go investigate?

Liara::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::blink::pinched::pinched::pinched::pinched::pinched::pinched::pinched::pinched: GAHHHHHH!

Liara throws her chair out the window.

Liara: Alright... let's go...

That should happen if Shepard hands Liara the answer....it would be funny if the chair hits that volus looking to purchase neural stims for his enviro suit.

Shepard just swoops in and solves everyone's problems, it's kind of annoying.
