It seems to me that they spent so much time perfecting the combat and technical aspects of the game (which admittingly they did) they cut a lot of story and character stuff.

That is precisely how I felt about it.  I've heard (I think it was on these boards somewhere, actually) that the level cap in ME2 is 30 because the level cap in ME3 will be 60 and they're not going to futz around with the gaming mechanics this time.  Which would be awesome - I really like the mechanics, and that would give them time to actually ... have the story branch and go different places due to decisions in ME1/ME2.  Which means they could, in theory, if they found it in their hearts, Actually Continue Romances.  I'd really like that.

Might mean a faster turnaround this time, as well.  Like TOB/BGII.  And TOB did handle the romance continuation well.

Pity Gaider's probably on DA2, but maybe they could get him to explain to them how to continue a romance.

I just hope they both fix the romances and make the choices in ME1/2 about other issues actually matter.  I want a really different ending/feeling depending on my choices.

Considering DA:O:A I not sure Mr. Gaider is all that great with continuing romances either.

Well, he didn't work on DA:O:A.  Same thing with some of the odd things in RTO.  It seems like Bioware is getting so large that the teams don't communicate properly.

According to his posts in the forums he's lead writer on DA:O:A.

Q1 2011 seems too rushed (unless they aren't changing the game engine at all and are not creating new squad mates). My expectations are early 2012 (two years).

I think early 2012 would be the best for the game, but it's going to be hard to wait that long to see if it's worth buying. I would not mind knowing how it would turn out right now so I could put all this crap behind me.

I don't mind waiting as long as it takes for them to get it right.  Q4 2011 wouldn't bother if they don't cut corners around everything with the story this time.  Still, that assumes we get an epic Liara expansion this year that makes me even want to get ME3.

THIS.

I'd really rather wait for ME3 and have decisions carry over in a meaningful way, rather than a cosmetic way, than to have ME3 right now and have MY Shep forced along the path of a default Shep who, apparently, never really cared about their ME1 LI to begin with and is a complete jerk to everyone.  Because, again - I stand by the idea that the content actually in ME2 is fine.  Good, even.  I actually like it the more I play it.  But the part where Liara is brokenly confessing that she gave Shep's body to Cerberus, and Shep just sits there like a cold, unfeeling bastard?  That's just awful every time.

I do hope if there is Liara DLC it simply isn't the scenario as described above just put back into the game. That would be so disappointing.

I'm not getting my hopes up either. No piece of DLC from BioWare or any other company has ever blown me away. 99% of it is overpriced twaddle. Maybe BioWare can buck the trend.

I will agree that combat was improved, but I hope in ME3 people have stopped decorating there homes and places of work with hundreds of explosive crates and barrel's, I would also like to see Shepard made a little bit tougher with cover a little more difficult to get to.  Other then these two thing's combat is fine minus a few buggy moments which are not the system but glitches that need to be adressed.

The story and dialog is where most of the focus of ME3 needs to be, a few tweak's in character options if they have the time, but story in an RPG should always be first and foremost.

I was surprised to find out he did that with Ascension as well.

I will however give them credit for being upfront about it, and they do give you the option to not play as your Warden from origins. I am not happy about it, and will not be buying the xpac, but I wont have as many complaint's about it because I will not be buying a game expecting something to be there that is not.

I was always planning as playing as the Orlesian, so I'll probably get it.  (My canon playthrough I did the final sacrifice anyway.)

Yeah, and he named "budget" as one reason why DA:O:A doesn't have romances. Now, we don't know the numbers, but I think it's safe to assume that EA didn't lose money with DA. Therefore I have to assume "budget" doesn't translate to "lack of money", but rather to "lack of will to spend more money and time, in order to maximize profit". What does that mean for future BioWare games, namely ME 3? We don't know. NWN SoU wasn't a great expansion by any means, didn't have romances either by the way, but BioWare produced HotU and other great games after that.

But... I for one can't help but feel that in ME 2 already corners were cut, and gameplay simplified and actionified, for the exact same reason. Probably also why the ME 1 LIs were handled so terribly. If this development continues, it could mean bad news for the fans of ALL LIs from ME 1 and 2, including of course Liara, to keep this tied to the topic. As long as the casual gamer mass market buys, the outcries on this forums are nothing but a storm in a water glass.

But let's see how DA:O:A turns out, maybe it's really good after all and does have great characters and dialogue. I would certainly gladly be proven wrong in my suspicions outlined above, and give BioWare/EA my money for a good expansion. However, I will not buy games that are too far below my standards for PC games, which after all were set by BioWare themselves.

I don't plan to get it at all, while I respect them being upfront, part of me wants it to fail miserably, It may be just the kick in the ass Bioware needs to start paying attention to continuity for ME3 and future DA project's.

There are still people though that will throw cash at anything Bioware puts out, I can understand it to some extent because crap for bioware is still usually better then the average game by a good bit. But if we keep feeding them for doing less, how long will they keep that reputation?

And ... this.  BioWare games are the only games I'll pay full price for (I just wait for all other games to be discounted - sure, I'm usually 6-12 mos. behind on the "newest most awesome game" but ... I don't really care about being 6-12 mos. behind on the "newest most awesome game".  I always have a game that's new to me to play).  Anyway - BioWare gets full price out of me on games simply because ME2 is the first time I have ever seen them make a misstep of the magnitude of the poor ME1 LI handling.  And the characterization/RPG/romances/awesome-squaddies are, for me, what separates a BioWare game from any other RPG.

Bleh.  I just deleted a bunch of stuff where I felt like I was whining/complaining/ranting again.  I am, by nature, a cheap thrifty bastard (and usually patient), and it just saddens me that the only game company I'd buy a first-day release from seems to be sidelining the very qualities that makes them the only game company I'd buy a first-day release from.  I hope they stop doing that.  I'll end up buying and playing ME3 regardless - there is that whole Reaper threat, afterall - but when I buy it, and how much I'll pay for it, is the part that's up in the air.
Meanwhile - due to comments in this thread - I just bought BG.  I have no idea how I missed that one, but apparently, I'd completely love it.

@ jbauck

Public service announcement: I hope you got BG 2 as well. If you can live with the old graphics, the game itself still doesn't need to hide from any current releases. Just don't forget the unofficial patch and the romance mod , both are absolutely mandatory in my opinion. You can find all that stuff on the net. And now back to our scheduled programming, err... topic. :innocent:

Did you buy Baldur's Gate or Baldur's Gate II? The first was an entertaining D&D game, the second was a game of immense immersion and magnitude.  You may get a little disappointed in 2 sometimes also, the game is 10 years old now, it suffers from the, if you are not a male human fighter with low intelligence, wisdom and charisma, much of the dialog makes little sense.  But for the time period it came out, it was truly epic and ground breaking.

After listening I think this would have smoothed things over with Liara from the friend side of a relationship, there is still nothing there to adress the complaint's of a continueing romance.

Indeed.  At least they are upfront and saying there's no romances and that Leliana and Morrigan aren't in it instead of conning us with "They have big roles" like ME2.

Still I cancelled my pre-order because of this so perhaps it would have been best for them if they didn't leak that information. :P

Funny you mentioned this.  I was thinking about BG2 the other day and how the expansion seamlessly continued from the original game (especially with the romances).   If they don't touch the game engine much, ME3 could be thought of as a 'huge expansion pack' where they could focus on the story and continuing with developing the surviving crew members from ME1 and ME2 instead of adding a whole new squad.

This. Pseudo-seamless moving on to 3 would be great for what I eventually intend to do, replay the entire series from 1 through 3 with a new shep.

I just finished KOTOR today and receieved the 4-in-1 Baldur's Gate set a couple of days ago.  Haven't played them in a decade (?) now.  I'm trying to immerse myself in a world where BioWare didn't break my heart.

PS.  Juhani gets screwed almost as bad a Liara.  We never could talk about us after the final battle like she said we would. :crying:

@bjwea and @Sharn01 ... thanks for the tips. I picked up the 4-in-1 pack, so that's 1 and 2 with the expansion for each. I have a hugely high tolerance for old-graphics/old-gameplay (I have a DOS emulater installed - I replay games that are THAT old), so I should be all set.

@EveryoneElse ... Liara just must be a squaddie in ME3. With an actual continuing romance. And an epically happy ending. There is No Other Option.

I'm impatient. Give me Liara DLC with her as a temporary squadmate and continuation/acknowledgement of the romance.
