My take on Liara...makeup for pic spam:
As a youth, Liara was fascinated with the Protheans for legitimate reasons. Their disappearance was the ultimate galactic mystery. No one knew why this grand and ancient civilization had suddenly vanished. They also had laid the foundation for all the technology in the galaxy....they were awe-inspiring, but then they just...vanished. Anyone could easily see the appeal of wanting to crack this mystery...how could this ancient but so advanced civilization just vanish without leaving that much of a trace behind? I could see a young Liara getting caught up in all this mystery...the challenge of figuring out how such a grand species could be reduced to a few scant ruins and artifacts.
Just think of our own ancient mysteries...we have the pyramids in Egypt, Stonehenge, the Mayans, etc. This is only a subset of one species on one planet...think of the appeal of trying to crack the fate of an entire species on a galactic scale. This would drive a young Liara into the archaeology field. Furthermore...she was successful at it. She had to be, as she was pretty damn close to solving the riddle of the Prothean extinction herself. And, of course...being successful at something breeds confidence. She's good at piecing scant amounts of data together in order to develop 'large picture' theories about that which she is studying (in this case, the Protheans). Even though others didn't acknowledge her success, she knew she was getting close to the answer.
Well, due to her youth....no one listened to her theories. No one. Still, she pressed on. She still tried to prove to the scientific community that the Protheans underwent some kind of mass extinction and more importantly, they weren't the first grand civilization to do such. She's almost stubborn in that regard...she will hold onto what she believes is right, even if others do no see it and don't agree with her. What kept her going? Confidence? This may be part of it...as I said...she was quite successful for one so young. Determination to see her hard work come to fruition? Yes...I think that was some of it. Just...her curious nature? The desire to crack this ancient mystery? Definitely...as I said, this is very appealing to one of an inquisitive nature such as Liara. A sense of personal responsibility? Definitely...Benezia would have instilled this in her at an early age. Don't give up on what you started.
Well, then the answer just falls into her lap one day in the form of one Commander Shepard. I really don't see how she couldn't have great admiration and respect for this figure. The one who survived a real working Prothean beacon. The one who has visions of the answer to the grand mystery of the galaxy burned into her/his head. How could she not have some respect for this person...feel something for them? At first...it was purely scientific, but soon Liara realized there was a person behind all of this. An intriguing person...a War Hero...an Earthborn Sole Survivor...a dedicated Spacer loyal to the Alliance. A person with a rich history and their own life...their own opinions of the galaxy garnered from a unique perspective Liara knew nothing about. She started to care for Shepard the person and not the War Hero/Sole Survivor/Torfan vet. At first they were just another mystery to crack.....and she did it, but then she started to appreciate the person she found after that was all said and done. It doesn't matter if Shepard is a Paragon or Renegade, she/he is a person that stand by their convictions...a person that doesn't compromise their beliefs. I think Liara would especially appreciate someone of this 'stock', given that she was raised by Benezia, someone that is as genuine and driven to succeed in their goals as Shepard. Someone with a sense of personal responsibility.
Thus, Liara is intrigued by Shepard...enough to desire her or him as a potential bond mate. Shepard can comply or not. If not...Liara will still go on having great reverence for Commander Shepard as a person and as a leader. I don't see why she wouldn't. Additionally, Liara is the only other person that has also seen the visions of the Prothean extinctions. She has seen first hand exactly what the galaxy is up against...the Reapers.
Fast forward to Shepard's death. To Liara, Shepard was the last hope against the Reapers. The only person that knew about the threat of the Reapers first hand...the only one dedicated to stopping them. It makes sense to me that Liara would give up her own life to try and bring the Commander back to life. In the least, to ensure that Shepard received a proper human burial service, though her hopes did lie in resurrecting the Commander (which is why the body was given to Cerberus). Some may feel she did this out of some twisted sense of romantic love for Shepard, but I beg to differ. I think it was more out of respect for what Shepard was....a strong man or woman who was possibly the only one that could stop the horror that Liara saw first hand through the visions. A person that wouldn't pull any stops to save the galaxy.
Enter the Shadow Broker. The Shadow Broker had absolutely no respect for Shepard....as he/she/it was about to give the Commander's body over to the Collectors to inflict who knows what kind of experiment on it. A completely opposing attitude that Liara had towards Shepard's corpse/person. I think it's understandable that she would feel a great deal of antipathy towards this figure. In addition, the identity of the Shadow Broker and the inner workings of its business is another grand galactic mystery. I can see the inquisitive scientist Liara wanting to crack it. This time, she is solving a puzzle for what she feels is a greater good....to bring down a mysterious and galactic wide crime syndicate....one who would turn over the body of the only one who may be able to stop the impending darkness to an unknown faction (the Collectors). So..why wouldn't she spend the time waiting for the Lazarus Project to run its course hunting this entity....cracking a grand galactic scale mystery? Both her compassionate nature and her inquisitive nature would drive her to do so. Yes...she has placed herself in a difficult position b/c of it (taking on the SB ain't sunshine and rainbows) but I feel that she is doing it for the right reasons, plus...she's good at it. She's confident, and successful as an Info Broker....a career she had to undertake in order to defeat her enemy. I don't feel she is lost or evil. She's still the same Liara who gazed upon the skies above as a youth and dreamed about cracking those ancient mysteries that would have snagged her attention as an inquisitive young asari.
All I got to say is...Liara...she's awesome!
