Time to party like it's nineteen ninety nine!

Do you think the Asari were an aquatic species at some point?

Mess Sergeant Gardner hints at such, when he muses that his Calamari Gumbo recipe seems cannibalistic from the Asari, who originated it.

We need a beach side quest in ME3. I bet Liara would look pretty cute in a bikini.

Nope.  They might have evolved from a primate-analogue, the manal.  That might plot asari evolution as being similar to human evolution.

On a less-serious note, Beach Party DLC would be cool.

Similar to human evolution? There's the Aquatic ape hypothesis. Not sure how likely that is, though - that's not exactly my field.

I know that you're just being silly, but just because asari have appendages on their heads that look like tentacles, and just because humans typically associate tentacles with aquatic animals on our planet, it doesn't necessarily mean that tentacles are the domain of aquatic animals on Thessia, too.

I wish Bioware would tell us what their head-tentacles are for.

In related news, "Aquatic ape hypothesis" is an awesome name for a stoner jam band.

True.

Can't understand why I didn't think of this earlier, but given Liara's comments on Virmire, I think a beach party might not be that much fun for asari.

Heat regulation maybe? Fleshy heatsinks at the top of the head instead of hair? Not a pleasant thought, but it might be possible. I wonder if there's any taboos about touchin' 'em. They also apparently move over time, so perhaps they get longer?

Goodwood thinks they might be eezo nodules, and that the asari evolved on a world where a bunch of truly ancient starships crashed, scattering eezo all over what became known as Thessia. There's a planet in the Amada system, in the Omega cluster, that has similar conditions.

Goodwood also reckons that Gardner simply made that joke out of pure ignorance. Not necessarily malicious, but still unfunny.

I've heard that somewhere before, that they're eezo nodules connected direcly to the brain, and that they elongate over time, providing more area for more nodules.  Or, they grow with biotics usage.  What would be the purpose of the structures on the backs of their heads?  They have a unique design and texture.

Their head-tentacles could serve the double purpose of providing more surface area for heat dissipation.   If biotics work the same way for asari that they do for humans, they might cause the asari to have higher body temperatures due to higher calorie expenditure.  The head-tentacles could also allow them to cool themselves.

I'm off to bed now. Goodnight everyone!

Also I wanted to say to all of you that your extremly positiv support of me have been very helpful, even going so far and getting the better of me despite the pessimistic attitude I carried! :) I've managed to turn a bad start into a decent one.

Holiday will begin tommorow and then I can continue my work!

I could buy into the idea of tentacles being storage compartments for eezo filled neurons suppling the brain and body with biotic ability but I haven't seen any evidence that they grow with useage since all of the Asari in the game have tentacles of similar if not the same size and shape. Wonder if they're rigid or pliable

Character models are very inconsistent.  Shepard, for example, has Harkin's model.   I don't think that they can be used to properly gauge things, either way.

As for rigidity and pliability, they have to be able to fit in to helmets.   I think that they're soft, with a cartilaginous or bone ridge down the center that provides support and protection.

Now that I think about it, if asari value their biotics more than any other bodily function, save for the mind-joining, and if asari do have eezo nodules in their head-tentacles, it must be the most grievous insult to wound their head-tentacles.  Cutting them off entirely might kill an asari, impair her brain functions and/or reduce her capacity to join minds.  At the very least, it could reduce her biotic abilities.

Most of the Asari beauty advertisements featured on Illium seem to imply that asari.... head tentacles? Head crests? Head thingies? Move or become assymetrical over time - time not being specified so who knows if its a couple months or a hundred years - so we could draw from those advertisements that perhaps they grow or become more swept. They're probably rigid because Liara had to have a specialized helmet in ME1, if they weren't rigid she'd probably be able to fit in a regular female human helmet.

Also taking what we see in game is probably not indicative of how it is in the actual ME universe itself, otherwise Liara's as tall as DudeShep and there's only 4 different asari markings/makeup styles in the entire galaxy. Damnable video game limitations harshing on my immersion:lol:

Yet the begining of ME2 shows Liara with a typical helmet.  I kind of imagined them to be somewhat pliable like folds of skin but they never seem to move or give way. Of course no human's hair moves either.

Anyway I'm wondering with all of the fan fic writers on this thread if anyone has given any thought to how the Normandy crew will react to Liara and/or a Liara/Shepard pairing. I mean if Liara at some point joins the crew and say, resides in Shepard's cabin won't the rest of the crew have some opinion ?

The old ME1 crew gather around the cockpit, staring at EDI with excitement. They all start talking at once.

Joker: Ok, GUYS! GUYS! SHHH! SHHH!... Ok EDI... now what's happening?

EDI: Liara is now depressed. She's worried Shepard will die in the Reaper attack.

Doctor: Oh no...

Tali: Keelah...

Garrus: And?

EDI: She wants to know he's coming back. She's crying.

(silence)

EDI: Shepard is now cuddling Liara. She seems to be happy.

Doctor: (gasps in relief) Oh good!.. Good...

Garrus: Yeah... I guess... Poor girl...

Tali: I hope she's ok...

EDI: They are now taking their clothes off.

Joker: WHOA!

Garrus: What?!

Joker: Describe! DESCRIBE! Or hell, RECORD!

EDI: That will be all. Logging you off.

Joker: NO!

Legion: (hacks Normandy and brings it up on the screen) Human and Asari reproduction previously undocumented. Further data required.

Joker: What are you talking about? Most of the Extranet is porn!

Legion: Pornography is artifficial; inconsistent with reproduction in a natural setting. The Geth are curious about actual reproduction, not entertainment.

Joker: Legion, I take back every bad thing I said about the Geth.

Garrus: (to Tali) I'm guessing Geth do not have a conept of privacy.

Tali: Geth do not have the inhibitions of organics and they are programmed to share data. To Legion, this is like a flower being pollinated.

Program 501: (to the rest of Legion's programs) I told you that excuse would work.

Not really what I was thinking but funny none the less. Joker "record" likely.

Joker has something to say about all of the crew if you ask him.

Kasumi is nosey enough to comment about Shepard and Liara having been an item after Illium.

Kelly has a brief psych eval about all new crew members.

Grunt comments about Garrus, Turians and Salarians

Mordin offers mating advice about LI's

Zaeed comments about Jack

Jack and Samara render opinions about Miranda and Jacob

Garrus, Tali and the VS all know Liara from before.

Miranda knows Liara.

I believe they would all have some comment about Liara, especially if she's living in Shepard's cabin

Miranda would probably absolutely hate it at first, probably give you a big long winded lecture about protocol this and crew morale that. But she'd come around eventually.

The only "new" crewmate's opinion I have a hard time picturing is Samara's. It's easy to ascribe motherly aspects to her because that's a big part of her character, but then again she may not even care who you do.
I mean what you do.:innocent:

Miranda's self perception of being second in command would likely be challanged. Her comment(s) would probably reflect that as well as her friendship with Liara

Samara might say something about Liara's age or react with motherly advice

I think some of the new characters, like Thane and Samara might want to know more about Liara and Shepard, and ask someone like Garrus, Tali, or the Doc to give some details.

I forgot about Chakwas, she and Liara did spend time together on the old Normandy and Liara does mention visiting her during her tour of the new Normandy
