I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and clarify:
Both characters know that Shepard will be on the Normandy and Liara will be on that other ship, and that they'll both be very busy indeed, especially Liara (Shepard at least gets downtime during travel between systems).
Knowing this, they talk about the relationship they'll have? Erm, WHAT relationship? Unless you count the occasional booty call...

So? The Reapers are coming and the galaxy needs to be ready, both Liara and Shepard knows this. They share a precious moment before duty seperates them again. reafirming their love (and Shepard promising to return).

By SW sense I meant that a) Liara retires soon or B) becomes consumed by the darkness required* for her job.

*I strongly believe that the SB must at least condone the killing of innocents (women, children) here as well as other unpleasant thing to hold on to power; not doing these things will result in an insider thinking that the SB has gone soft and taking over, or in one of the other criminal organisations (gradually) taking over. Evil methods are simply more effective (which is why people use them despite the risk of punishment)

Edit: OK, I probably screwed the SW reference up. I haven't watched the movies in ages, and wasn't really a fan

Well, when you put it like that...

Bah. I guess I'm just pissed that she's not on the Normandy.

I agree that romance plots in ME tend to be short paths to sex scenes, but when romancing someone on the Normandy there's room to fill in the blanks. We know it takes days to travel between systems. But with Liara as the SB there's no such leeway, and with her tendency to obsess over just about everything other than Shepard (Protheans, the Shadow Broker, Feron)...

It just didn't feel like much of a "reafirming" of anything to me. Liara said that working as the SB is everything she ever wanted, not a duty that she's doing for the good of the galaxy. And Shepard seems depressingly unaffected by her decision and her reasons for making it, neither of which would make him happy IMO.

Chapter three of Persistence of Memory is up.

Summary: Liara has information critical to restoring Shepard. Miranda will do anything to get it. She'll even teach Liara how not to get killed. Facing her own past-and her attraction to Liara-was never part of the bargain.

Talking about marriage, old age, and little blue children would throw a real damper on most booty calls in my experience ;)

On the other hand, if you tell Liara you're both likely to end up dead anyway, then she isn't interested. If it really was a booty call, that statement would probably cause her to tackle you onto the bed. You're gonna die tomorrow on Ilos, or in the Omega 4 relay, or facing the Reaper fleets, so might as well have your fun tonight. Well, I believe someone from BW did characterize it as James Bond in space. The ending to LotSB struck me as being rather more sincere than that. (Incidentally, the James Bond books are much better than the movies, and one reason is that some of his relationships affect him much more deeply - see especially "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"/"You Only Live Twice".)

OLC I'm sorry to hear that you weren't happier with the outcome. FWIW, if it does turn out that you can't draft Liara in ME3 or at least have her as a consistent and dynamic presence (they way you can build relationships with people in camp in DA) then I expect most people here would not be happy either.

- Liara talks to Shepard about not staying in the ship and becoming a weirdo.

- She's worried about him going back into the fray.

- Asks him how he really feels, not just what he says to the crew.

- Talks about babies and marriage.

- Sophisticated VI and Feron there to take over from certain duties.

- Makes him promise he's coming back, staying alive.

- "Don't be a stranger this time."

- Shepard constantly calling her out about the way she was in the start of ME2.

etc etc... it's the best LI scene and it all points to her not sticking on that ship.

Liara as the Shadow Broker places her in a unique position as a character of equal importance to Shepard unlike a squadmate in a subserviant role taking orders from Shepard. Had Liara passed up on the SB opportunity she would have been weak, dependent, needy, clingy and basically a poor match for Shepard. Instead she acted out of strength courage and love taking on her new role as someone capable of standing on her own and providing Shepard with an invaluable resource in combating the impending galactic threat not to even mention giving Shepard the knife to cut the strings to Cerebrus should Shepard choose to do so. Liara is far from a 'booty call', in fact Liara is currently the only character in the universe able to stand side by side with Shepard as an equal. The idea of bondmate is actually plausable from this perspective. This is not to say that Liara won't join Shepard at some point, she probably will when circumstances allow but I wouldn't expect that to occur before making some crucial discovery about defeating the Reapers or insuring the survival of sentient life.

She's still on Shepard's side but instead of traveling to her room on the ship you travel to her ship. This does not preclude a relationship nor does it prevent a relationship from developing or becoming one where marriage, old age and a lot of little blue children is possible.

I agree that the first time I played LotSB I was disappointed that Liara became the Shadow Broker, and it didn't leave an absolute certainty that she will join Shepard in ME3. However, after the first playthrough I thought about it and thought that it was perfect. With Feron, Liara could join Shepard at certain times, especially at the final battle, but not being a full squadmate.

Liara being the SB, means that now Shepard can finally cut ties with Cerberus once and for all (if you play that way). After all, now Shepard will have someone in a position like the Illusive Man and he trusts Liara. Also, Liara will have a merc army like Cerberus.

I have never liked Cerberus and the association with them. And the ending of ME2 left a gray area on whether you ended your alliance with Cerberus or not. LotSB makes it possible that in ME3 you can cut ties with Cerberus once and for all.

In Retribution Shepard is listed as off the grid. This takes place after LoTSB... so now where do you think Shepard has gone if he is off the grid. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out, whether Liara is a love interest or not.

Eh, being off the grid doesn't mean she went to Liara. Remember, she has a stealth ship and connections in the traverse. I mean, during ME2 only Aira really knew who she really was. Granted, Cerberus would be looking for her, but with Miranda and EDI on her side, she'd be able to avoid them without too much difficulty.

No, not a rocket scientist, just someone prepared to read second-rate spin-off fluff. :D

Seriously though, that's interesting to know. ^_^

OLC, speaking of which...

Any Garrus and Aria fans, please chime in if your characters feel out of key :) Or Liara, or Chakwas. Or even Harkin.

(The Collector base is engulfed in radiation as the Normandy sails away)

TIM: Shepard! It's a new day, blah blah blah. Now what?

Shepard: I'M GOIN' TO DISNEY WORLD!

Grunt: What the @#$ is that?

(later, at Disney World)

Jack: THIS is what "normal" human children do? Maybe I wasn't as bad off as I thought.

Tali (unlimbering her shotgun and setting it for Inferno ammo) I am going to unload this into the next grown human who tries to hug me while dressed up as a pyjak.

Shepard: Shut up, people. Here's the Jurassic Park exhibit.

Dinosaur: RRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Grunt: THIS is why I follow you, Shepard.

Shepard and Liara: (step into a dark office where man is turned around in his chair)

Shadow Broker: Here for the drell? Reckless, even for you, Commander.

Shepard: Your men are dead. It's over, Shadow Broker

Shadow Broker: A minor inconvenience. They are replacable.

Liara: Show yourself!

Shadow Broker: (turns, revealing that he's... Mickey Mouse) I've been in power for centuries, haha! Since the 1950's! Haha!

Shepard: (flashes back to their first, horrific trip to Disney World) YOU DIE NOW!!! (fires their weapons at him)

My pleasure pacer90.

God I remember calculus. Never understood what the hell was going on. Even dug up my old final exam and I couldn't make sense of it today if I had a gun to my head.

Haha, he even looks a bit like it when you first see him in silhouette, doesn't he?

Assuming that means my story since Aria isn't in Persistence so far ;) Thank you very much. She's the character I feel least sure of. At first I really didn't care for her, but she grows on me as I try to write her.

And Mickey Mouse has been in power for about as long as the Shadow Broker. :P

Come on, that shouldn't take more than 15 minutes (without the arc length question). Things get far, far worse

Horrid. Makes C++ look easy.
