I think that any negative connotations associated with wearing a dress is an entirely human artifact in the Mass Effect universe. The asari seem to default to wearing them whenever their job or situation allows, and asari dominate social trends and have been defining what women wear in the galactic scene for nearly three millenia. Most of the human females you see in cosmopolitan areas wear dresses, even if they personally don't like them, like Gianna.JaylaClark wrote...
Makes sense -- tell you the truth, in my eyes, if there's one ceremony then either both Shep and LiLi would be wearing dresses or neither would be, just to emphasize the equality of the moment.JPfanner wrote...
An asari bondmate ceremony just seems like something very nice and considerate to do. I guess I'm tired of being Commander Shepard and ordering her around, slapping Liara in a white dress and hauling her off to the chapel just seems like an extension of that. Having your union recognized in a traditional asari manner seems to me like you're saying, "I'm not Commander Shepard to you, Liara. We're peers and partners from this time forward."
There's definitely some skewed power dynamics, I'd just like her to know that she's more important than anything else.
And if there are two? Probably the same, with an option for my Shep wearing the dress for the asari ceremony and LiLi wearing it for the human ceremony. (Whichever religion my non-agnostic Shep is, specifically. I think she's a Unitarian or the like.) Still, you have a very valid point, JP.
I guess the way I would see it, is that in an asari bondmate ceremony the participants could wear whatever they wanted and no one would read anything into that. Asari have been becoming bondmates with aliens for nearly three millenia, so they've probably gotten used to diversity by now. Still, I'd imagine the "default" would be dresses for females if only because of the general asari fondness for them. And there would be nothing read into that, there aren't any "uniforms" for a bride or groom role. You just have two people affirming themselves.
