Apart from loving Liara, specifically, I thought that I'd list some of my thoughts for why I like the Asari species as a whole. I encourage other people to list their reasons, too.
I like the Asari because I find their long lives and devotion to their partners to be tender, romantic notions. That Liara can find someone to love (Shepardso early in her life is fortuitous for her, and impressive for me.
The child of an Asari/non-Asari pairing will live far longer than even the whole its non-Asari parent's lifetime. That is wonderous within itself. That is the symbolic act of passing on one's memories, experiences, advice and values to one's children.
An Asari herself will love far longer than her non-Asari partner. An Asari will also, potentially, have multiple partners during her lifetime. It might be controversial for me to say this, but I'm not put off by this because I don't subscribe to the belief that I "own" my spouse's body and soul, and, likewise, she doesn't own my body and soul. When I'm gone, I live on through my wife and children's memories of me, and the way I influenced my wife and children during my life.
To expect that a woman who can live over 1000 years should simply wait for her own death and for the Hereafter is, in my opinion, selfish. In fact, I would hope that, if I had an Asari as a wife, that she would go move on eventually, after my death. The only thing I would expect of her is to treat our children fairly and to raise them as she thinks I would want her to (which, hopefully, is the way we
both want them to be raised).
As much as it may pain me to say so, an Asari wife's life could contain so much more potential happiness (and woe) if she were to move on, and have happy and sad moments with others, and to have children with them, as well.
Phew. That's a lot of pondering about romance. Discuss.
