Right. Presumably they are getting paid to write good content, even in rushed situations. That's what they do. And any time they want to trade their job for mine and put all that pressure on me to produce solid written material in a changing medium under duress I will gladly trade. I have pressures too and I still manage to do a good job.
Getting paid for your work also entails having someone over you with creative and deadline control though. When I, or anyone else, writes a fanfiction story its purely out of enjoyment and we don't expect to get anything other than a few views and some comments. We can take our time, be free to be liberal with the plot, and all sorts of things paid writers can sometimes only dream of. Movies can have some flexibility with their massive budgets and huge staffs, but videogames are much smaller operations and when you are having to write dialogue, events, background, and everything else, something has to give.
The writing staff was probably tasked with: Make Liara/Ashley/Kaiden seem somewhat unappealing to encourage cheating/moving/new storylines. The result is what they came up with. I could criticize their work, but considering I am probably a mediocre writer, at best, I feel thats a bit presumptuous.

If they didn't do anything to fix it in Liara DLC or do Liara DLC at all, then I say we can take a strip off of them.
But, it looks like they are definitely going to correct their mistakes.
I love the Beautiful Blue Goddess with all my heart and I can't wait for the Liara DLC, but I think we have to look at some of what the writers could have faced.
Unfortunately, we don't know what the writers were thinking or what other obstructions they had while writing the scene.
It may seem simple to us to be able to write the perfect Liara scene, but maybe they were just at a temporary loss for how to handle it. Anyone can burn themselves out of anything.
It could have been as simple as someone from marketing telling them not to write anything about the romance until the Redemption comics were finished.
We just don't know the situation they were in and if they had multiple people telling them to do different things.
Everything you will ever do can look better while you are doing it, it is not until after you are done and had a chance to review it that you can realize your mistakes and fix them.
I actually think the subtleness of the Liara reunion probably sounded and looked better while writing it, but the actual execution was not near what they thought it would be like.

I don't know about that. You don't need to be a writer to recognize bad writing, like you don't need to know how to build your own car to be able to tell if it drives well or bad. I think we have every right to criticize their work. It probably doesn't change anything, but in the end my opinion decides whether or not I will buy their next game.
And indeed, I think ME 2 has many more flaws than just the botched Liara scene. This is not really the thread for an in-depth discussion of that, but two words sum up my opinion of the main story writing and presentation: Bad joke. I don't care that it's still better than all the other crap that sells so well. This is BioWare, and I expected much better from them. I have many more complaints about the game. So to answer that question from above: Yes, I am very upset about how the game turned out. This was already the last deciding element that stopped me from pre-ordering Awakening (probably won't get it at all after reading reviews), and I will definitely not pre-order ME 3 either.
By the way, I read some of your stuff, screwoffreg, and it's not "mediocre", it's very nice.

Also I agree a picture of Liara and Shep in your cabin would have been so nice, I like to think in my mind that Liara has such a picture on her desk in her office on Illium
That would have been great!
Liara: "I have to find the Shadow Broker. One day he'll slip up and..."
Shepard (paragon interrupt): "What's this, Liara?"
Liara: "...hmmm, what?"
Shepard: "This. Right here on your desk. Why is that picture frame laying flat on the desk and stuffed under a bunch of papers?"
Liara (innocently): "Oh, that? That's nothing. Anyway, the Shadow Broker..."
Shepard: "What's it a picture of? Here, let me see it."
Liara: "No, Shepard, really, its nothing. I dont think..."
*Shep reaches for picture. Liara reacts and tries to stop her. They both take hold of the picture frame and a brief struggle ensues, ending with Liara relenting and Shep turning the picture over to reveal a picture of them together.*
Shepard: "Its a picture of...us!"
Liara: "Goddess, Shepard, I didn't want you to see that!"
Shepard: "So you do care! You have feelings for me! Why didn't you just tell me?"

Yeah, the second one is just not the same it is still great (besides the temporary lack of Liara) but just not the same. The Liara DLC will make a great difference for me though, but the actual storyline for ME2 has gone down the drain.JaylaClark wrote...
Well I like the game, I just don't quite love it like I do the first one, due to parts of the story... But I actually don't blame the writers. I blame EA, because the story is clearly rushed, and ... hell, BW wouldn't push out a game before it's done, right? Not unless they had to.
And LiLi is pretty clearly one of the biggest victims of that.
It is honestly a mistake to believe that the writers have any real control over the game's story or characters whatsoever, they are just told the parameters they have to write in and people keep track of their progress.
Even BioWare itself doesn't have as much creative control over their own games anymore.
When the guys responsible for your budget want something to happen, you snap to it at all costs.
I still believe we will get an amazing Liara DLC in the near future though.
I am still hoping EA might loosen the leash on BioWare and let them do it their way for ME3 and any other games after that.

Now, in order for that to be a major crux of Liara's DLC, it is necessary that Liara still needs to be harrowed by her guilt and sorrow, and for the romance between Shepard and Liara to feel "unsure", for lack of a better term. Hence, they can't have Shep and Liara engage in serious romantic talk or for Shepard to try to comfort her properly as it's vital that Liara is still in emotional pain at the start of her DLC. BW were somewhat limited in what they could depict in the existing reunion due to what's needed for Liara's story arc to remain incomplete.

There is nothing showing in it, and I always wondered what its purpose was. Any ideas?
The only purpose of the desk was when Shepard was standing by it looking at some holobook thing in Tali's romance scene.

I can imagine that is BioWare's plan for the Liara DLC.LesEnfantsTerribles wrote...
I did have a thought and maybe one of the biggest aspects of Liara's DLC will be her confronting her demons during her mission, and Liara and Shepard engaging in a small amount of emotional dialogue before a big confrontation/situation at the end of the mission, in which Liara breaks down even further, before a scene on the way back in Shepard's cabin, which is romance specific and focuses on Liara and Shepard both reaffiriming their feelings for each other, helping Liara to conquer her guilt and emotional tormenting, and vowing to never leave each other's side.
The Liara reunion was definitely not perfect, but they did try to give us subtle indicators (being that subtle is probably not the best route to go for video games unfortunately) but the most important part of it is that we know BioWare's plans for Liara DLC and that they are definitely thinkingabout us Liara lovers.
The mysteriousness of the whole scene probably seemed like a great idea (and like you said, it made us wonder
about the romance) when they thought of it.
Unfortunately, they probably were not allowed to give us too much information because of thecomics and the Liara DLC and that is why it turned out the way it did.
I am confident that the focus on Liara's guilt will be the major story of the Liara DLC, Ican't see any other way of creating the DLC besides the emotional storybetween Liara and Shep they have already setup.

When Liara comes up to Shepard's cabin at the end of the DLC, she'll replace that picture frame with her own picture of the two of them together that she's been secretly keeping hold of.

I actually read a well written fanfiction that had Liara and Ashley falling in love. The descriptions of them "being intimate" were rather wild. It doesn't fit eithers personality (Ashley seemed more like a fem-shep with a different name), but still...something to think about .
