There seems to be different lighting during cutscenes too. Above is during a cutscene, lower picture during normal gameplay:



I was mostly trying to find a way of getting rid of these awful pitch-black shadows in other areas, but of course I want to make sure that other places look good too.

That was Harbinger who is still out in darkspace, just not as inactive as the other Reapers and able to communicate and posess the Collectors because they were modified and implanted for that.  The Collector base and ship probably both had something like a quantum entanglement communicator (but with more bandwith than the Normandy one) so that Harbinger had an effectively realtime connection to them.
Frighteningly, near the end of Ascension you find out that the Migrant Flight is freaking crazy.  They sent out ships to look for a suitable alternate world, but also to look for any dormant Reapers so they can use them to control the Geth.  So who knows what they might find.

Not sure where Harbinger is actually, I believe all those Reapers you see are the ones sitting in dark space hibernating as it were, the only real thing you know is it controled the Protheans and that's it.

They seem to spawn some colored lights even during the regular dialog with her too.  When I had my TestShep in there taking those screenshots I talked to Liara and it looks like a blue colored light colors her from the back during the dialog.

Definitely. When I said cutscenes, I meant the dialogue too. The lighting is really strange in some places. Even outside her office, and in other places too. The lens flares don't look good either, and the shadows often don't match with the light sources.

BioWare were never cutting-edge on graphics though, they shone with story telling. Until ME 2, I guess.
