I always found Liara to be the exception to the rule as a Maidan (there are always exceptions to the social norm), if she was really different than the beautiful personality we saw in ME1, why did she work on dig sights for so long by herself?
That shows that she was telling the truth and explains why she is socially akward.
Even when you execute those Salarians that are mindless and trapped in Saren's base, Liara seems to turn away because it is too brutal.
I know that it is the same for all of the squadmates, but why put that in there if Liara was really different? Shouldn't they have had her be uncaring in ME1?
I think the reason she wasn't sad at all when Benezia died was because she was trying to hold all of her emotions in and be strong for Shepard and the mission.
The way she is in ME2 is what happens when someone gets consumed by negative emotions, surre they can be helped though, they just need someone to help them (Shepard in Liara's case).
Some of the most brutal killers ever could have been normal if it wasn't for were they live and/or grew up, your brain adapts to your environment.
So I think this whole situation was BioWare's way of having all of the negative emotions Liara has had to deal with since she joined up with Shepard and since Shepard died.
It just doesn't make as much sense to us right now because Shepard can't do anything to comfort her (because of the comics).
Because the reunion is actually very well done if it wasn't for Shepard, it is truly heartbreaking to see Liara the emotionally tormented.
But that will be fixed in Beautiful Blue Goddess DLC.<3:wub:
Hey, good to have you back Les. Liara missed you!

I don't really see her thinking this way. She was an asari archaeologist, a field that she even admits that she gets very little respect or recognition in because of her age. She doesn't seem to care what her "peers" think, she continues her own investigations and has her own theories. So I don't think her sense of self-worth is determined by comparing herself to others.screwoffreg wrote...
Still, I think Liara is ambitious for her own life and would probably chaffe at the idea she would stand second to Shepard forever. Perhaps she WANTS to be the Shadow Broker, to offer something of her own (at least in her mind) rather than just be a hanger on. Whether she can remain in the position uncorrupted (doubtful) remains to be seen. No other romance has had someone turn to a darker side. In fact, most of them become "brighter" (Miranda's loyalty, Jack's opening up, etc).

I know this has been said before. But I think ME3 will be in some way similar to DA, in the fact you have to build up allies to take down the reaper fleet.
