I've been thinking about this whole 'Liara is dark now and needs saved' stuff. I've decided that, depending on how they handle this in ME3, I might actually choose to push Liara to the 'Renegade' side, if given an option to do so. If, for the 'Paragon' option, they do the whole 'Liara has lost her way and needs big tough Shepard to come save her' garbage like they did with Bastilla in KOTOR and Aribeth in NWN, I think I'll take the 'Renegade' option and not 'save' her. I'm just not 100% anything she's doing now is 'bad' or that she needs 'saved'. I think JPFanner is the one that keeps mentioning the fact that if Liara were male, she would be getting praise for her actions in ME2 instead of being considered 'lost' or in need of saving.
I was away for the weekend with Easter, so just reading through the stuff I wasn't around to see. Sorry if I'm a bit behind the conversation, still catching up.
Yeah, I have brought this up a few times. I don't really like to do it often since it easy for that kind of discussion to spiral out of control or make it seem like I'm just hypersensitive. But I really do think there is defnitely that kind of attitude, and when people compare Liara to Aribeth and Bastilla it just gives me a twitch. And I mentioned that no one comments on how many people Garrus effectively hunted down and murdered or that Wrex playing Conan. I like Garrus as a friend, although I think he kind of suffers from Conrad Verner syndrome, but seriously the stuff he did in ME2 is a bit disturbing. But it's all cool for some reason.
Then Liara saves your body, goes through hell to do it, and thinks she has good reasons for wanting to take out the Shadow Broker. And she gets all these labels applied to her, and people are moaning and wringing their hands left and right. It is even more annoying because everything she is doing has something to do with Shepard and the Reapers. She isn't playing some self-fulfilling fantasy like so many others. She doesn't even WANT to have to be doing what she is doing. She's doing it because she's a hero and can't just walk away to dig through ruins on Ilos.
So yeah, I do find the whole concept of her "needing saving" to be condescending and I really can't help but feel it has to do with gender since the menfolk can be mass murders and no one cares. And when people mention KOTOR or NWN it just makes me go, "Grrr!". Seriously, you want to know why Liara isn't "dark"? It's easy to tell, she isn't dressed like a ****. Pretty much established as a fact that women can't go "dark" without changing their wardrobe. And that isn't hyperbole, it does seem to be a fact.
