To play devil's advocate here...Liara could be broken up over Feron and not Shepard...if she was truly in this dark place, because she loves and misses Shepard...then why not go with Shepard, and sort it all out on the Normandy...if the very fiber of her being, is that she loves and misses Shepard with all her heart and soul...then wouldn't going with Shepard, no matter what Shepard is now, be more important then anything? Liara isn't going to figure out what Cerberus did to Shepard, or what Shepard has become, by sitting in her office.
Because she IS broken up over Shepard!! She even bloody says that in-game during ME2! And the fact that she's so broken up over Shepard, the person she loves, is what's fuelling her desire to end the Shadow Broker. Because of her failure to cope with her guilt, sorrow and emotional torment, she transfers all of that despair into hate and projects it onto a convenient individual in the Shadow Broker. Liara believes that by ending the Shdow Broker, it will help ease her pain and she'll be happy again. We're artifically prevented from comforting Liara in ME2 because they need to maintain the status quo of her being hurt and in emotional pain, because they're holding it over for the DLC, and because they need a reason for her to not be on the Normandy. If we were able to comfort her, and ease her pain and tell her that offing the SB isn't going to make her feel better, then she'd be right back on the Normandy at Shep's side, happy and contented again and with the person we love.
My advice is to wait for the DLC.
Okay, this is good too. One point, though, we have to remember that she can 'love' Shepard like a sister or brother, and still do this kind of thing. (I think I would for my brothers or sisters, though one of them
actually said not to. I had to tell him it's impossible so it's moot. I have a weird family. Anyway.)
But guilt over Shepard... both over giving her over to Cerberus (when she might
ComeBackWrong and might be happy where she is anyway), and over sacrificing
anyone over that effort -- especially someone aiding her like Feron ... that explains a lot.
I wish we didn't
have to do all the work to explain it, and I'm torn between grading Mac's overall job regarding Liara as a D+ or a C-, because ... it really shouldn't have been so vague. But I think we have another piece of the puzzle. Plus Kasumi of all people talking about ME1 LIs, including Liara... it kind of makes me feel that they know there's a hole and they're gonna try to patch it up. (As this is about comic books, insert Power Girl joke here.)
