Here’s an idea.  What would you want your Shep to say or ask when confronting Liara and what would you want her to say in response?

When I "confront"  Liara, is that the first meeting with her on Illium, or is this another, hypothetical situation?   If it's the latter, does it take place before or after the events of ME2?

Sorry, should have specified.  The Collector base is either destroyed or in Cerberus' hands and after you check out your crew you head off to Illium.  What transpires? What would you want your Shep to say to Liara and what would you want Liara to say in response?

I would ask her, plain and simple, if she still has any feelings for my Shepard.  My Shepard would ask her if, after everything that needs doing has been done, she would like to get back together.  My Shepard would acknowledge that she's an Asari, so she doesn't enter lightly in to a relationship where she willingly joins minds with her partner, but also because she's an Asari, she thinks in the long-term, thus compelling her to think logically, precisely and deliberately.

I can't predict what she would say.  That's up to Bioware, and any answer I could give would only be tainted by my biases.

EDIT: I'm still of the opinion that while Shepard may be Liara's first, and that he will always mean a great deal to Liara, he doesn't have to be the one for her.  To suppose that he is is a very tender and romantic notion, but I won't buy in to it as a certainy of their relationship.

@ subject of Shepard/Liara relationship

I feel, for what it's worth...that unless one of them says to the other, that it is over, then it's not...no matter how questionable the status is. We haven't been allowed to talk about it, thus we might as well figure there is still a relationship there.

"Well, Shepard was dead for two years!' Yea, but dead people normally stay dead...so this would be a special case. Liara has clearly got alot on her mind, and has been busy for the last two years. However just because she can't come with you, doesn't mean she lost her love for Shepard. She shows signs to the contrary in fact. Yes there are those little hints that bug the crap out of me, with...he who's name shall not be spoken...but I can get over that...I trust Liara. Only time will tell if my trust was misplaced or not.

Lots of couples the world over, have things that keep them apart. And they stay faithful and make it work, because they love each other. Throughout history epic love stories of lovers parted, longing day after day for each other, only to be reunited and happy again, have been told. Not everything has to be a damn tragedy...I wish writers would remember that...happy doesn't have to be boring.

Liara has a job to do...she needs to do this...her reasons aren't perfectly clear...but if Shepard loves Liara, then she has to let Liara do this. Liara in turn, knows Shepard has a job to do, and so lets Shepard walk out the door on Illium. If I know Liara at all...she broke down in tears after seeing the Normandy take off...wishing she had said something more, wishing she had gone with Shepard...but they both have a duty to do.

As for he who's name shall not be spoken...he was a tool...something Liara could focus on, other then all the emotions that must be going thru her, other then dealing with the loss of Shepard and thinking about Shepard coming back, and in what state. Also what Shepard will think and feel. he who's name shall not be spoken has been locked away somewhere or is dead now.

Liara fears what Shepard will think of her...she wants "Redemption"...to prove herself to Shepard...she wants to atone for what she saw as a failure...first she left Shepard to die on the Normandy...then she nearly lost Shepard to the Shadow Broker and Collectors...she then let *grumbles* be lost to save the body of Shepard...then she gave that body to Cerberus...Liara has to feel really bad about herself right now...understandable with everything she has been thru. Her mental state is a mess.

While in our minds, Liara has no need to worry, and we simply want her back...because she did nothing wrong. If anything Shepard and Joker are to blame for all this...but she doesn't know that. And we aren't allowed to help her see that, and let her know we love her, and will always stick by her no matter what. Liara wants to prove to Shepard that she isn't a bad person.

That's why we are given what we are, and that's why I love Liara, and why I'm staying faithful to her, till the bitter end. The writers can still screw this up...or they can turn it around and give us something beautiful...I'm still the same pessimist...and I've lost most of my faith...but they haven't ripped out my heart and stomped on it...yet...

Perhaps bioware wanted to have different types of love stories to choose from. In the first game the romances lacked some of the drama they might have had due to a lack of conflict with the actual relationship. Little by little over the course of the mission you grow closer to your LI and eventually have the pre-Ilos scene to consummate it.

In ME2, those same relationships get a giant injection of angst with kaidan/ash flipping out on shepard and Liara being in the situation she is in.

For those who don't want the angst, bioware leaves the status of those ME1 romances open to interpretation and demonizes the characters a little so that people can feel more comfortably with a new LI

As fans of the ME1 romances, we decide to deal with that angst, frustrating as it may be, and it comes down to whether you think Liara is worth the frustrating drama, which i think most people who post here would agree she is

Just repost it when things have picked up.   If it's going to get lost like you say it will, no one will notice that you've reposted it!

I noticed!  And I'll merely accuse you of being sucked into les's post of UberPositiveOne via quantum! </Discworld_ref>

But it really does make sense.  To our minds, and I'm going to say it's likely what the writers think of faithful Liarasexuals, Shepard and Liara are merely lovers apart, not on a break or broken up.  To the non-faithful, they can think all they want that two years have passed and everyone's moved on, but it doesn't fit the logic of the story, and they likely will be called on it later in ME3, or even in the expansion pack or DLC.

TheirShep: But I thought you would move on --

Liara:  WHY would you THINK that?  I KNOW how long it's been for me, for you it's been what, a month?

I think I've said this on occasion.  Choose Your Own Cliche, I call it.  Either run-into-a-new-love's-arms or lovers-apart (like Arwen in ... the vast majority of LotR).  I just wish they gave us as much of a mini-reward as Ash and Kai romancers get.  (Because I Couldn't Let You Go, to me, is the reward ... kinda screwed up because there's no romantic-exclusive content.)

Hey, well I did say it before...that I'd get to this point...and here I am...so there. But really *cough* I kind of, um...skimmed alot of his posts for awhile...anyway...DLC and ME3...maybe...coming to grips with the crap writing and its presentation...yes.

I won't get into the whole reasons not to cheat on Liara thing again, or the stupidy of people that do...but espressolarity...maybe only at the shock of Shepard being such a moron and falling for said moron...not out of anger or jealousy though.
