I can't really agree with this. There are plenty of ME1 fans who enjoyed ME2 - myself included. Now, granted, the treatment of characters from ME1 may have left a little more to be desired, particularly in the case of Liara and her sudden personality shift, but I don't believe for a minute BioWare was intentionally antagonizing old fans.

They may not have been intentionally trying to antagonize old fans, but they sure as hell didn't try to please us either.  Their message was loud and clear..... "Fans of ME1 Romances: GTFO!"

That is kind of funny because I didn't get that message and am a ME1 romance fan.

Not Biowares fault your so thick that you can't understand anything. Nor were they doing their best to antagonize people. They just obviously didn't realise there is a bunch of socially inept idiots whose first ever love was a bunch of pixels depicting a blue alien who have never experienced anything in life to realise why the characters reacted the way they did.

If there message to ME1 romances was what your dimwitted mind thinks then I am quite sure they wouldn't have bothered with the scene of Shep looking at the picture of their LI if they remained faithful. Course that would be the truest definition of "We don't care.", the fact they did include that shows that they do care and as said, those of us that do understand why they did it are happy with it and are looking forward to seeing the ME1 LIs return in ME3

While I agree with what you're saying in broad terms (hence my original post) I have to agree with the others that the personal attacks are uncalled for. My intention wasn't to antagonize anyone here but to simply state my opinion. Like you, I'm a fan of the ME1 romances (though I did end up romancing Tali in my first ME2 playthrough) and I think both Liara and Ashley were well-written characters (Kaidan too, but I never ended up romancing him, even with my heterosexual fem!Shepard - I don't think their personalities meshed well) who deserve a larger part in ME3. And, like you, I think BioWare does care and that they were trying to be fair to both newcomers and fans of the old romances. But I have to cut short of agreeing you entirely, given your choice of words.

I don't care which romance you prefer, but if in the next game

a) you aren't able to say anything,
B) your LI doesn't say anything,
c) and no one else says anything

concerning the romance with your favourite character, I don't think you would call that fair, would you.

That leaves us either with BioWare trying to be fair as you said, but obviously failing completely, or with the explanation that I find more likely, which is that they indeed do not care.

I don't know, I thought the emails were a nice touch. As was the kiss/hug (depending on who we're talking about). And they did say something, usually along the lines of "I cared for you" or "I couldn't let you go," etc, etc.

The tattoos look pretty cool, but it just doesn't really look like Liara for some reason.  If I saw that mod walking on the Presidium, I would just think its another random Asari.  :P

Yeah, the emails are something at least. Plus, you can talk to Joker about Ashley and Kaida. I still wouldn't call it fair in comparison to the new romances and fan service to other characters though.

But anyway, there is no email from Liara, and you can't talk to anyone about her. And not even the "I couldn't let you go" line is exclusive to games with an ongoing romance. Her complete dialogue is always exactly the same, no matter what. The only differences throughout the whole game are the kiss and the picture scene in the end. The kiss gets quickly broken up without any explanation whatsoever, while the picture scene shows at least that Shepard still cares. But we have no idea what Liara thinks about it.

That should explain why you may see more complaining in this thread than in the others. The Liara fans simply were screwed the most.

I'm kinda thinking that in MassEffect3 they have a series of actual big choices that included all of your decisions from both games such as: love interest (to abandon ME1 LI or go back), Conrad Verner (maybe joining your squad), stay a spectre and abandon Cerberus or go rouge, that sort of thing. anyone else feel like this might be what all this nonsense is leading up to?

Replaying ME1. Just got to the point where Liara confesses her interest in my Shep. Wonder, if there is something to the instant attraction or if she is just in love and doesn't really know how do deal w/ it or both.

I wonder if it is because the visit to Liara is sandwitched inside Thane and Samara that we don't get any acknowledgement from the crew, Joker, Kelly.  That BioWare just couldn't sandwitch Liara's recognition in w/ the Thane and Samara recognition as both trigger when you come back to the Normandy.  In fact, when would that trigger?  Liara's mission is flexable.   That doesn't explain a lack of email, though, but then again you don't *have* to argue w/ Liara.  I agree that the reunion was sorely lacking, but I wonder if there was a technical issue along w/ a writing issue.

She is falling in love with Shepard and doesn't know how to deal with it. She has been alone and only concerned with her work for over 50 years, so she has never known love or any other close relationship.
What we see over the course of teh game is Liara falling head over heels and finaly decides to drop her barrier. Shepard also spends the game falling in love with Liara, she too has had no relationship or love interest to speak of. You could say that it was close to love at first site for both of them. /uploads_user/1070000/1069890/27991.gif

Seems to me like Liara has a little bit of a crush. She's been trapped in the bubble, not sure how she is gonna get out. Worries the Geth are going to find a way to get to her...then here comes Shepard along to save her...then that Krogan wants Liara handed over, but Shepard saves her again. Then the way they run out of the tunnel, it seems like Shepard is looking out for Liara.

Then she gets back on the Normandy and learns that Shepard used a Prothean Beacon. She knows that any normal mind couldn't have dealt with that, so she is intrigued. Not just by the information from the Beacon, but by how strong Shepard is.

After all this, Liara has a major crush on Shepard, and she acts like she does, because she doesn't know anything about Humans, and she's scared of making a fool of herself. It's also likely, because she's never felt this way about anyone before, as well.

You have a point, and I certainly understand the feeling, but if Liara's romance were more prominent, it would make the unfaithful element sort of untempting, which was BioWare's aim partially in raising the new romances. I agree more would have been nice for those who did stay faithful, but I can hardly blame BioWare for giving the ME1 romances something beyond Shepard to focus on. I agree that Liara's new character arc seemed a little forced, but I liked that BioWare at least tried to give a reason as to why she wasn't going to join you for ME2.

Given the way they meet, and the crush they develop for each other, when they learn of each other feeling the same way...it sparks their love for each other...they spend time talking together and showing intrest in each other. It was love at first sight.

The Shepard/Liara love story really is the best. <3

The way I've always looked at it is that Liara's interest in Shepard is ignited when Shepard tells that krogan that Liara is staying with them, and that he can't have her. The way Liara then looks around at Shepard, and stares at her, shows that Liara is appreciative of Shepard protecting her, and how Shepard has her best interests at heart. The interest in Shepard is strictly on a platonic level at the moment, however.

Liara then finds out that Shepard has been exposed to the Prothean beacon, and her interest in Shepard increases even further, this time on a scientific level. Like scmadsen says, Liara is intrigued by how strong Shepard is to withstand it, and that Shepard has been touched by working Prothean technology, something that has been her passion for 50 years.

Through talking to Liara, her interest then develops into romance, which we can obviously persue. Shepard talking to Liara, been kind and considerate to her about Liara's interest in Shepard on a platonic and scientific level leads to Liara developing deeper feelings for Shepard. She discreetly looks up Shepard's service history so that she doesn't embarrass herself in front of the person she loves again. That's the progression of Liara's feelings.

In short, it goes like this:

Appreciation of rescue > Interest in Shepard on a scientific level > Development of romantic interest

This of course only happens if you talk to Liara, are nice, polite and considerate to her and nurture her feelings for Shepard. It's why people accusing Liara of being shallow and throwing herself at Shepard makes me so annoyed!!

Sunnie, that's beautiful! But so sad too. Why couldn't we have got an email like that from Liara? Why?!

Great work, by the way. That really does sound like something Liara would write.

Night Sunnie! Have pleasant dreams about our lovely Liara!

Justin, have you seen how the PC players have been able to mod the Liara picture on Shepard's desk? Wish I could do that, J has an absolutely beautiful picture of Liara now. So jealous!

Yeah I remember seeing that. I even commented on the whole "asari blush" thing. It didn't make any sense to put blush on Liara's face when it's clearly made for human skin. It looked a bit strange.

Great! Thanks for making that. This is a paint job, not a mod though, isn't it? (Otherwise I want the mod!)
