I can divert those tomatoes to myself. I've never played FFVII. :o

Yeah, it didn't move me much but it spawned so many conspiracy theories and people scrounging to find a way to resurrect her.

Anyway, if video games are ever going to be taken seriously as a real art form, then they are going to need writers who push the limits of emotional impact.  Dragon Age had leaps and bounds better conversations and dramatic scenes that ME 1 or 2, to be honest.  Bioware has the capability, but if they write for eight graders and their ADD behavior, well...

I'll quote him - the forum doesn't like my copying & pasting it.

Basically he was talking about a scene that he's writing at the moment. He posted it 8 days ago.

"Well, it's emotional and... stuff. If this were a few years ago, I would just write a clunky overwritten bit in which the character painstakingly explains how she's feeling to the player."

"But if this were a movie, then she'd just sink to her knees, and Shepard would hug her from behind, and neither of them would say anything, and the camera would pan around them slowly while Sarah McLachlan's "Arms" played."

Hmm, I'm reading this, and my interpretation could be that Weekes is describing how his own writing style has developed and changed somewhat. If he is indeed describing an emotional scene with Liara in the DLC, perhaps he's referring to how he's writing this deep and emotional scene, and the context with which Liara is going to open up to Shepard. He refers back to how he would have written it a few years back, and how it would have happened had it been in a movie. Perhaps he's suggesting that there will be a balance between those two scenes? That Liara will open up to Shepard, tell her how she's feeling, before the two then embrace?

I thought he was referencing ME1, and how it had meatier, more interesting dialogue, and now ME2 is instead more cinematically oriented and as such the dialogue standards have dropped down dramitically.

Yeah, his posts are always interesting. Things we know:
  • It's a scene he's writing now/was writing 8 days ago.
  • It involves Shepard
  • It involves a female character, who is being comforted by Shepard
  • Said female character clearly means a lot to Shepard, as he suggests Shepard would hug her

When I write dramatic scenes, I turn to certain songs and movie scenes to help me.

I don't claim to be a great writer, but one of the scenes that choked people up in my Liara story came from watching in Lord of the Rings where Arwen's father, Elrond, tells her of the fruitlessness of loving Aragorn.

The music, the hazy-dreamlike quality, and MOST importantly the WORDS themselves created such a powerful scene. Peter Jackson had his WIFE write it, as he felt only a woman or someone in tune with a certain mindset could do it justice. It remains, to me, one of the most moving scenes along with Theoden's monolgue in the second film.

Relying on graphics alone to convey emotion is foolish. Words and HOW they are said, along with music are critical to create the right atmosphere in the minds of the viewers. Look af Final Fantasy VI with its pixelated and outdated graphics. Even now, it is regarded as one of the best RPG's of all time, primarily because of:

Music
Dialogue

Certainly not its stellar and emotive imagery alone. To use one aspect alone is to lean on a crutch...

Note: This is a general comment directed at no one in particular

I am little scarred to post this but i really wonder if what i write is interesting.
It's my vision of Collector Base Mission whit couple altering of the game events.
But except obvious addition of non egisitng thing there is someone there as squad member who (at least so far) is unable to participate in that mission ;).

The most important thing here is that if Weekes is referring to Liara, then we are going to get a deep and emotional scene in which Shepard comforts Liara, helps to obviously ease her of her pain and guilt, and in which Liara in some way opens up to Shepard about how she's feeling, and how much Shepard means to her. Very promising IMO, looks like that this DLC will have emotional, intimate and tender scenes with Liara.

In order, I am going to claim you are a good writer.  And one of these days I'll finally finish my nervous-Liara-is-nervous fanfic so you can judge whether or not my claims mean anything.

And for serious, graphical representations can't do anywhere near as much in these games as expressions or gestures can in reality or cinematic-grade CG movies.  (Possibly not even the latter.)  They need dialogue and music to be any sort of help.

Indeed.

To be fair, if we do get decent emotional stuff in the DLC, I'll actually accept the crappy game-mechanic reasoning behind her staying on Illium afterwards.

In that dialogue which apparantly bookends the DLC, she says she has to stay to go through the data - crap reason, but we know that she'll never be a squadmate in ME2, so I won't be that surprised.

So long as we get some good meaty stuff during the actual DLC in which she opens up, I can remove the post-DLC dialogue from my mind and wait for when she inexplicably jumps back into Shepard's arms in ME3.

Ill be honest with you ratz, I found Alistair annoying and I did say to myself (without realising the supposed influence) "what the frak is this, muffy the dirtbag slayer or what?"

Not at all a fan of Buffy of any of that Whedons works really.

You are a good writer! :P And that is an interesting method.

I tend to do the opposite, draw on my own experiences when writing fanfics, or try o get inside the character's head and emotional state.  Don't know if that works well or not, but w/e

I hope they don't do this, either.  Parts of ME2 have done a good job conveying emotion through graphics, but as that has failed Liara so far, I wish they would abandon that thought immediately.

MDK, I'm going to try to allay alot of your fears regarding those hidden audio files. :) Deltaboy expressed similar worries to you in the Ash, Kaidan and Liara group, and I posted this:

Delta, relax pal. Those audio files are cut, they're not listed in the
folders marked with "DLC" at all. They're cut files, garbage. If you
listen to them, it seems BW's original intention was that Shep and
Liara together would take out the SB, and then Liara would sift through
his data in order to find ways to help Shepard in the upcoming battles
against the Collectors. That was the original reason for Liara not
joining the Normandy. She was going to help you.

As I said
though, those files are garbage and are not likely to ever see the
light of day. The whole story and Liara character arc has been
completely rewritten and revised, and is alot bigger now. Plus, they
realised what a stupid reason that was for Liara not rejoining the
Normandy. 1. Why would she continue on in a job she so obviously hates,
and not go with Shepard as she expresses desire to in ME2? 2. Why would
she not read the data on the Normandy, with the help of a powerful AI?

As I said, don't worry my friend. Those files are garbage, and the DLC will be alot deeper than that.

So yeah, I wouldn't worry about what's in those cut audio files. They're rubbish, and are likely to never see the light of day. Liara's current character arc has been greatly expanded and revised.

Well, he is a writer so I have faith that he knows the power of words alone.

Platoon was an amazing movie, and some of the scenes with the sparsest dialogue convey the terrible and dark message of the film when conveyed with the right atmosphere.

Once again, I use Lord of the Rings as an example. The simple words in the book, "Ride Now, Ride to Ruin" are slightly expanded but still relatively short. It turned out to be the prelude to the best battle scene in the film.

I guess my point is that the Liara scene doesn't need to fill a novel with words. With the right combination of everything, it can become a very impactful scene.

LOL, well said ;)

Les is our shining optimistic beacon. He keeps us going like nobody else can

@ Marcin - Laters!

@Ratz - I wish I was around in the old days, but then again I guess I'd miss it like you guys do. Maybe it's not so bad I don't have to feel that sort of anguish. I can't really miss what I never had.

Actually, he will always reply on LiveJournal - I recently asked him for advice regarding my artwork being posted against my will, and the complications because it's fanart.

He instantly responded, and was very helpful and pleasant.

Having said that, he probably can't discuss any plot-related stuff.

And please, do continue creating your beautiful artwork of Freya and Liara together. It's stunning!
