When I write dramatic scenes, I turn to certain songs and movie scenes to help me.
I don't claim to be a great writer, but one of the scenes that choked people up in my Liara story came from watching in Lord of the Rings where Arwen's father, Elrond, tells her of the fruitlessness of loving Aragorn.
The music, the hazy-dreamlike quality, and MOST importantly the WORDS themselves created such a powerful scene. Peter Jackson had his WIFE write it, as he felt only a woman or someone in tune with a certain mindset could do it justice. It remains, to me, one of the most moving scenes along with Theoden's monolgue in the second film.
Relying on graphics alone to convey emotion is foolish. Words and HOW they are said, along with music are critical to create the right atmosphere in the minds of the viewers. Look af Final Fantasy VI with its pixelated and outdated graphics. Even now, it is regarded as one of the best RPG's of all time, primarily because of:
Music
Dialogue
Certainly not its stellar and emotive imagery alone. To use one aspect alone is to lean on a crutch...
