Secondly, my take on Liara in ME2...

On my first playthrough, I was pretty dumbstruck by Liara's change. I was expecting something big, and I wasn't at all surprised - until one specific piece of dialogue. When you initially refuse to help her kill someone, she casually says she'll kill them all if she has to.

That made me put the controller down for about an hour.

I just couldn't believe what they'd done to her. I mean, I had no problems with the change - I thought it was especially appropriate for her to become much darker after Shepard's death.

But to become so acustomed to killing.....that really knocked me for six. Luckily, I did find the "because I couldn't let you go" dialogue on my first run too, so at least I got the justification.

Unfortunately, I think that was overshadowed by the extreme disapointment that she is so unreceptive to Shepard's presence, and doesn't seem to care - even if she was a LI.

I squarely blame BW for this - not the character shift itself, but for her interaction with Shepard. After I'd played ME2 a few times, I'd become used to her role in it. It wasn't until I rewatched some scenes from ME1 that I began to get angry again - particularly one line - "I am with you until the end" - I know it's meant to just refer to Saren, but hearing that, and then thinking of how she acts to Shepard in ME2........didn't exactly please me...

It's just my opinion though, there's really no need to go spreading it around...

I think that's how everyone reacted to Liara's role in ME 2, to say the least. But I'm glad you didn't just abandon her, and especially that you didn't stop caring and creating art about her! That's probably what the writing intended, that we all should stop caring about the old characters and run to the new characters and LIs. Never, I say. Like you I don't get angry about the characters, just about the bad and transparent writing.

On a more positive note, that face is very well done!

Yeah no joke. They mentioned more compelling LI's? More like they did everything in their power to make your ME1 LI's relationship non-existant. I'm also glad MDK is still making Liara fan art. She was a very popular character in ME1, and once 2 rolled around, well people abandoned her in droves... there's not that many Liara fans left.

Don't get me wrong, I do love some of the new characters - people who have read my fics will know about the penchant for Jack/Miranda I have.

However, I don't believe in marginalising the ME1 characters, as the ME2 writing seems to have done. Technically speaking, the game doesn't make sense any more. Would my Shepard accept Liara's new life? Hell no. She'd probably resort to knocking her out and dragging her off to the Normandy if she could.

Unfortunately, the ME2 writing - as has been said - seems intent on making you dislike the ME1 characters and encourages you to go after the ME2 LIs. I still think that Ash, Kaidan and Liara will suddenly become good-natured again in ME3 when we're "allowed" to have them back.

I think you're entirely right about the sudden good-natured thing. Unless there's some substantial DLC or an expansion, they're going to have to do that in order to get on track for ME3. I also liked a bunch of the ME2 crew, and I only have playthroughs where they all survive the suicide mission. I wish they didn't butcher the ME1 cast so bad. As you said, it seems like the intent was on making you dislike them. Most newcomers to the series who started with ME2 tend call those characters everything but human/asari. <_<

I doubt we'll see much in the way of character development in DLC to be honest. As much as I would love DLC that adds Liara as a squadmate and all that, they would have to make ME3 work for someone who didn't get that DLC.

At the moment, Liara is the only ME1 character that can't die - assuring her a decent role in ME3. If DLC made her a squadmate, she can then die, and therefore they won't put as much effort into her ME3 content as there's a chance people won't see it.

Same goes for simple development - if there's DLC that expands the role of the ME1 LIs, ME3 will have to take into account the fact that people may not have that DLC.

It's like BDtS - the only carryover from that was an e-mail. As soon as something becomes a variable, the amount of work involved skyrockets, and the importance of each permutation will probably diminish.

That's why I am a little concerned about the Liara DLC - it's pretty much certain it will be released at some point, but the problem is - if it involves any changes to her character, ME3 will have to be built to accomodate that, and I'm not exactly optimistic about the priority BW would place on it.
