I think it was very stupid of BioWare to say they want to make it "stand-alone" when you know most people that buy ME2, either played or own ME1...just because the sales numbers from the launch of ME1 and the launch of ME2, might show ME2 to be the more popular game...there was a long time there for people to pickup the first game. I for one, came in late. The game had been out for sometime, before I got it. Same is true of alot of people.
We wanted to see the story advance, we wanted to spend more time with our friends we made, and our special someone we feel for. We wanted stuff to build. But that isn't what we got.
Now the people that like Tali and Garrus, got what they wanted. So they are happy. Even if the story didn't advance, atleast their favorite characters did. So they are happy, and then comes the outcry from them, how great a game it was...when we that got left out, hate the game, and tell BioWare as such.
They get a mixed message, and it seems the outcry from the happy people, might be louder then from us, the unhappy people. Thus we can't expect things to be fixed in ME3.
ME2 will never go down as a great shooter game...why did they even try to market it like one. Pointless...sure the combat is better then the first game, but that's not why I play the game. The combat could of got worse, and if the story was great, I wouldn't care.
BioWare made a huge mistake, in that any shooter types they pulled into the game...would be unhappy with the gameplay, and whine about too much story. While the RPG fans, might like the new feel to the gameplay...they hate the story failure. So by trying to branch out and please everyone, they in fact mostly failed both parties.
Now, I'm generalizing and stereotyping, so make what you will out of my statements.
