Planet Trebin, Alliance date 23 July 2183:
Despite the outside viewcams showing the Mako bouncing everywhere, SHEPARD, LIARA T'SONI and TALI'ZORA NAR RYYA were enjoying a relatively smooth ride. They'd investigated the missing ExoGeni scientists and destroyed the indoctrination device; all that remained was to resolve the mystery of the survey team's lost observation satellites.Tali (deadpan): Sensors are picking up a concentration of life-forms approximately two kilometers to the northwest.
Shepard: Looks like a series of small ridges ahead; whoever it is may be using it as cover.
Liara: How can you be certain that they are sapient beings?
Tali (slightly exasperated): Trebin has no native life. Aside from the research team, no one should even be here.
Shepard: Which makes it even more likely that this isn't just a group of squatters. Not if they're using that kind of cover. I smell mercenaries, or worse.
SHEPARD halts the Mako well short of the first ridge, and she and the team exit the vehicle in full environmental gear. Taking a calculating look around, Shepard unlimbers her sniper rifle, beckoning the others to similarly arm themselves. Noticing that LIARA has pulled out a pistol and TALI her shotgun, SHEPARD sighs audibly, unhooks LIARA's sniper rifle, and beckons her to holdster the smaller weapon. TALI, meanwhile, shrugs in puzzlement.Shepard (to Liara): They're entrenched behind cover, Liara. Time to learn how to snipe.
Liara (confused): But...I have never...are you sure?
Shepard (patiently): If we storm in with guns blazing, they'll mow us down in no time. We have to thin their numbers.
SHEPARD looks about once more, then eyes a small divot in the closest ridge. It is covered in a layer of dust and sand, with some slight protrusions not yet eroded away providing some camouflage. She beckons LIARA and TALI toward her as she leans into the perch.Shepard: Down here, Liara. Tali, keep that shotgun ready in case they try to flank us.
Tali (cocky, flourishing her weapon): You got it, Commander.
Shepard (after settling in): First thing's first: setting up your location...Liara, what are you doing?
Liara (bewildered, still kneeling beside Shepard, who is prone): I am sorry...do you want me to lie on my belly?
Shepard (slightly irritated): Don't tell me you've never gotten your suit dirty during excavations. Now hurry up before they see us!
LIARA finally manages to shimmy herself into a position next to SHEPARD. She activates her rifle and starts fiddiling with the weapon's settings. SHEPARD looks at her, grinning behind her hardsuit's breather mask, and pulls the weapon away to reset the settings and demonstrate proper usage.Shepard (chuckling slightly): You're not going to hit anyone with your scope set to zero magnification.
Liara (apologetic): I am sorry, Commander, but I have never done this before.
Shepard: Well, now's the perfect time to learn. We can't let these idiots run freely, can we?
Liara (dubiously): If you say so, Commander...
Shepard: It's not that hard. The smart targeting does most of the work; all you have to do is point and shoot. Most of the challenge is where to point and when to pull the trigger. Here, have a look.
Liara (peering through her rifle's scope): I count at least five hostiles...three humans, one male and two female, and two turians, both male.
Shepard (also looking through her scope): Assorted weaponry; assault rifles, one sniper, one rocket launcher.
Liara: Who should we go for first?
Tali: I would guess that the priority targets would be those that present the greatest threat. I don't plan on getting hit with a rocket.
Shepard: And that sniper could get one of us as soon as we open fire.
Liara (still slightly flummoxed): You make this sound so easy...
Tali: Surely you've killed people before, Liara. It's just like then, except you're doing it from far away. As far away as possible, if you ask me. And without them knowing you are there.
Shepard: Sounds like you'd make a decent sniper, Tali.
Tali: Please Shepard, I'm a quarian. Most of the time we don't even have the chance to see into the kilometer range, let alone shoot that far.
Shepard: Point taken. But we're wasting time. Liara, do you have a target?
Liara: Yes, I believe so. Is it preferable to aim for the target's head, or for the body?
Shepard: That depends. If you're hunting krogan, best to go for the gut; they've got a thick skull plate. Same for turians, to a lesser extent. On humans, you definiately want to aim for the melon.
Liara: Very well, then.
Shepard: Okay, on my signal...fire!
LIARA and SHEPARD open fire at the same instant, the report of their shots ringing out over the landscape. Twelve hundred meters away two pirates, both facing away, fall over dead, gaping holes left in their helmets. The remaining three pirates scramble in a panic, sprinting for a nearby vehicle. LIARA hesitates, looking on with mingled awe and horror, while SHEPARD cooly pops off the remaining hostiles.Tali: Nice shooting, Commander.
Shepard: What can I say? It's my bread-and-butter. C'mon, let's go check out that generator they were guarding.
