Good observation. I think you're onto something. Adding those examples from all the other BioWare games I've played just rung a bell. It's a very slippery slope. Right now she has a noble cause, but who knows where that will lead. They say the road to hell is paved with good intentions. Still though, she's doing everything out of love for Shepard, I don't know how bad it can really get. I want to remain optimistic, so I will.

I agree and would personally like that type of twist. I like the opportunity to save her from something, not that she isn't self sufficient because she is, but everyone needs saving at some time or another. I think that would make for an epic ending to the relationship as we turn her back to the light side and marry her and live on Illium or the Asari homeworld, or even an uncharted world. Either way, as long as BioWare gives us a choice, I'll be happy.

/shrug Personal preference I suppose.  If ME3 is going to align Liara in a way that I have to spend the whole game chasing her down and trying to "save her" and only get back together with her as an "end scene" I think I'd rather not pay for disappointment again.

If they don't resolve all this with an expansion, and sooner rather than later, I don't see any reason to even buy ME3.

I want Liara by my side, not as a carrot to chase after.

That's a fair view I guess, but to me simple is boring. Honeslty I can't be bored with Liara, but if I had to choose, I'd probably choose something more vigorating like the suspense offered by our speculation. If she just ups and show up at the normandy boarding door like "Hey Shep I'm back, lets go get em", that would be cheesy. I like the idea of spicing it up, it adds more impact and emotion to the relationship.

Well, as for the last bit I did say "at worst".  Still, what exactly has BW given me to be cheerful about?

I can sum it up in one word...Liara.

Without BioWare, there is no Liara. without Liara, you don't even have this pessimism problem.

If they had given me that in ME2, yes I would have been cheerful. <_<

Which is why it should be dealt within an expansion, I agree I don't want her to just reapper in ME3 like nothing happened.

I don't however (and won't) pay for another game where all we do is get a glimpse of Liara here and there throughout the whole thing.  ME2 was bad enough.

I very nearly cheated on Liara, figuring hey, first playthrough's a throwaway anyways. Some of you may know the old song, "If you can't be with the one you love, love the one you're with." In the long run I didn't, and was rewarded with what I thought was a very poignant moment alone in my quarters with my picture of Liara before the final assault. I thought that was quality at least, even if the encounter with her on Illium was rather lacking.

On that note though, she does imply that she's not sure if she's being watched, and a well developed paranoia is hard to overcome (especially if they really are watching you). I chalked up her reticence to those factors, rather than to think BioWare 'dropped the ball' with her, and that's what I'll keep telling myself until her triumphant return in DLC and/or ME3. :D

I love your sig! :o

You know I was thinking, what if the Shadow Broker turned out to be Liara's Father? Seriously think about it, imagine her predicament after spending so much time tracking down the SB in hopes of killing him only to find out that the SB is her Father?

I've considered this too.  What a plot twist!

I think it's awesome that people speculate on the story and it's outcome. That's the sign of compelling story telling. After all, if you didn't care, no one would talk about it eh?
After several play throughs, I have come to the conclusion that BW will use your LI choices in one and two to resolve it in 3. Here's how in Liara's case:
If you cheated, I think Shep will be forced with a decision to help her get out of the predicament with the Shadow Broker or leave her to her devises and stay with LI from ME2. I mean it will literally be a life or death situation.
If you stayed faithful, then it will still be the same decision (much easier I presume). Either way, I think it will come down to your LI from ME1 dying or coming back to you.

You nailed it, we DO owe her and I would be more than happy to return the favor. She is worth saving let alone dying for.

Right.  I would sacrifice my Shepard at the end of ME3 to save Liara without hesitation.  That would be an awesome moment, extremely sad, but awesome.

It would be preferable if they fixed the mess she is in now before ME3. Her character was butchered so it would not make any sense if she appeared in ME3 like nothing had happened.

The last part I'm totally with you on. If she appearers only as a NPC and not as a squadmate there isn't a chance in hell I buy the game. She should be fully recruitable and from the start preferably.

So this single issue is so important to you that you wouldn't buy the game in any case? I wouldn't go so far. ME 2 had three major flaws in my opinion, in this order:

1. Weak story and (apart from the beginning and the end) weak presentation.
2. Handling of ME 1 LIs was a disgrace.
3. Excessive dumbing down and removal of important gameplay aspects.

Point 3 will likely not change for ME 3, unfortunately. But if not at least one of the first two points improves significantly, I certainly will not buy ME 3 at full price. How things change. A few months ago I wouldn't have imagined to even consider NOT getting it, with ME 1 being my favourite 3D game ever. Why, BioWare, why? :?

For me, at this point, yes.  This single issue is what I will be basing my future Bioware purchases on.

Just in case that wasn't obvious already.

I do not see a happy ending for Liara lovers.  That is probably being reserved for Talimancers.

You are completely wrong man, that is pessimism 101.

With any rational thinking, we Liara fans will get at the very least the same type of closure as any other LI. As far as optimism goes, we might get a step above is history serves us right, cause Liara is the most canonical of all of the characters, meaning BioWare can spend a ton of time developing her character as she will be in everybody's playthrough. If anything we Liara fans have more going for us than just about any other LI out there.

Yeah, I disagree. There is a "pure" Mass Effect story, and I think no matter waht you choose the central story from the dev and writer perspective is Shepard and Liara. They branch off of that with the other LIs and so forth.
This may just be my opinion, but I think it's true. I also think there will be some dire consequences for cheaters (ala...your former LI will not help you-your former LI is either important in the Alliance or  a now powerful Liara).

Liara will only be happy if you take down the Broker, so hopefully there is a Paragon path for that. Hopefully it also gets taken care of in a massive DLC pre-ME3.

Agreed. I think things will go positive for all LIs, but we may see some type of challenge or anxiety in each situation before the end credits. Yet I highly doubt BioWare will go down the cliche' path or the predictable paths with the LIs. BioWare is too good for that.

I'd like to voice my support for Liara in this thread, but right now I feel like everything I could do would be pointless since devs don't seem to care the least bit about what we want.

Might BioWare be setting her up to become a villain?

She is the only sure survivor out of all characters you recruit in both games, she is the only person whose personality really changed and there is a certain irony in Shepard rescuing the innocent daughter of his nemesis' advisor, only to (incidently) lead her down the path of darkness.

That would just solidify my opinion on the writing team being the bigest bunch of boneheads on the planet.

I definitely think she is being set up, maybe not as a full on villain, but certainly for something most Liara fans are not going to appreciate.  I think there is a pretty slim chance she will be back as a squad mate and a very good chance the "conclusion" of the "three part" love story is not going to be what people are expecting/wanting it to be.

I hope you are wron oh how I hope you are wrong

I could see this happening, you know, in a Shakespearean romatic tragedy, but I pray that this isn't the case.  I would have to hate BioWare for all eternity the way I hate EA which would be a shame because ME1 and ME2 are the only BioWare games I've ever gotten.

Also, thread needs more happy!

Ubertacular? That's one of the best words ever. Just like when someone called Shep a zomborg. I'm totally using that word if you don't mind =]

I totally agree that the thread needs more happy. Who else can't wait for the return of <3Liara<3 in DLC and ME3? I hope they get it right.

Thank you :D Need to find time to make a nicer looking one, it was kind of a hack job.

I heard something about a new Mass Effect something-or-other in Q1 2011, with any luck it's a Liara-centric expansion where we get to join up with her again and take down the SB network.

Or some new animals for our quarters. Commander Shepard, Pet Detective. :D

There's some sort of "exploit" for Dragon Age that lets you upload your own avatar. Not sure how it works.

It is important to me.  I don't like the direction that the ME franchise looks like it's heading in.  They only thing that will keep me interested is my favorite character (Liara).

The dumbing down of content might continue and if you think the ME1 LI's role in ME2 was bad, I can't imagine the ME2 LI's role in ME3 being any better (since they could be dead).

I hate being pessimistic but thy didn't leave much room for being optimistic as it is now. Time will tell I suppose but if they have plans to do something I hope they don't take to long. I guess nothing will happen until the comic is done so I give them till March but no more :P

EDIT: where did all those posts come from? Now mine looks totally out of place

Yeah, I noticed those avatars are stored in a da_* folder as oppossed to the ME2 ones.  I was just wondering how to do it.
