Um...wow...
First of all, let me reiterate one thing: nearly all of my writings are "stream of consciousness" and typically don't have much "planning" to them. I get an idea for something to write, and then just fall into it, re-reading it a couple of times while in the character's head and fixing bits here and there before posting.
That said...you guys kinda make me sympathize with those who accuse some of us Liara fans of "reading too much into things". "Pretty damning of the asari"? C'mon guys, it's just one letter from one bitter-as-hell old fart who's in-game commentary already shows she has little love left for her own species at this point. She loves Liara dearly, but she knows that interposing herself into Liara's life would be needlessly complicated for the both of them. That's as much an expression of love as any other, knowing when to back off or keep one's distance for the sake of the person one loves. Also, keep in mind that Aethyta probably doesn't know the full situation between Shepard and Liara...
...aw, hell. I'm not going to try and defend my own fanfiction anymore. You either like it or you don't like it...
Oh don't get upset, Goodwood! I like the letter!
I think the only part myself and york have a problem with is the "We asari don't value families as much as you do", which is Aethyta describing their species as a whole. If you'd said "I don't values families as much as others", then it makes alot more sense and you're conveying the point you're trying to make alot better, and it doesn't seem like you're making an assumption that's contradicted in-game about the asari as a whole.
That said, the idea of Aethyta being Liara's father is an interesting one. I prefer Aria myself.
