So we're agreed than that ME2 is not a hack job? Because a hack job has no subtleties or reading between-the-lines content. What you see on the surface is what you get.
Personally, I think Liara's character wasn't handled as well as it could have been in ME1. But once I finished her quest, I felt that her characterization made a lot more sense. It was still, I think, a bit too sudden of a shift from her previous character, but it wasn't a complete disaster.
Yeah, I'm not one of the Liara fans that think that the general direction that her character has been taken in is a poor one. I don't mind it, I think if it's handled well it can make me love her even more (if that's even possible!) and makes her very sympathetic, and deepens the Shepard/Liara romance story considerably.
What I do have a problem with is the execution, which I think has been handled pretty badly. Like you say, her current character shift is very believable, and is consistent with how Liara has been presented previously, but it lacks clarification and exposition. My theories and analysis all make alot of sense, I think, and to be honest with you I think that they will turn out to be true, along with what I predict will happen with Liara. However, we've got nothing concrete regarding Liara in ME2, nothing "confirmed" so to speak. Until we get that, what I theorise and analyse with Liara's character is still just mere speculation. I'm hoping that the Liara DLC will clarify and explain Liara a bit better, which I honestly believe it will.
