Marathon: Marathon 1, Marathon: Durandal, Marathon: Infinity
Each of those games had similar characters but ultimately were independent
Metroid Prime: MP 1, MP 2 Echoes, MP 3: Corruption
The same
This is not a new concept, the key here is three works connected in some way. Metroid Prime, Marathon and Mass Effect each continue the overarching narrative. You can do this without the characters I might add.

EDIT: OK, the better question is, how is it not a trilogy?

OK
It seems like people are confused about what a trilogy is based off primarily of Lord of the Rings.
Lord of the Rings is not a trilogy it was written as one work, it was split off into three because it was just too damn long. A trilogy of itself by definition is:
trilogy (a set of three literary or dramatic works related in subject or theme)
Which is why in space operas or fantasy you can write a theme based trilogy that can take place over thousands of years with new characters in each iteration.

Likewise in Mass Effect, by the end of the first game, Sovereign is destroyed. Mass Effect 2 still fits into the overarching story of stopping the Reapers, but it's from a different approach and the characters are doing different things and playing different roles than in the first game. If Mass Effect 2 were truly seperate and stand alone from Mass Effect 1, then the Reaper story line would not have been touched on at all.
So I will have to agree with Onyx Jaguar in that ME2 is a sequel to ME1. That being said, I do not deny the fact that Bioware have said that it was their intent for the Mass Effect games to be able to work as stand alone games. And the key words there were "be able to". But I think that if I had played ME2 before I did ME1, I would have been able to grasp the situation of the story fairly quickly without being utterly lost by all the references the characters were making, but I would really want to play the first game. I feel there is more connection than it's usually given credit for.

I know most people around here hate the idea. But what if Bioware make Liara go all "Benezia" on you in ME3 and have her become a villain or someone Shepard must oppose, if they wanted they could also have the Virmire survivor becoming an enemy as well.
What would your reactions be?
I'd hate it if they did it with any of the three characters, to be honest with you. With what we've been shown so far, and what is driving Ashley, Kaidan and Liara respectively and what we know of their characterisations, motives and feelings for and relationships with Shepard, there's no way BW could do it without it feeling incredibly contrived, forced and completely out of left field. It would get a pretty big facepalm from me.

But by definition a Trilogy is something that has been grounded in literature for centuries
I wouldn't mind discussing this with you later, after class, which I have in an hour, also not in the thread, you're a member of the Me2 character discussion group, right? I don't want to ****** anyone off, so maybe i'll discuss terminology with you there later today. That's all I'm going to say on the subject for now. Haven't finished my coffee yet.

Yep. I'm expecting something decent, with no sign of romance related content. That's as pessimistic as I can get.
