Yea I hope BW goes all out when it comes to endings in ME3. Since it's the last part they don't have to worry about how to pick it up.
It would also add to replayability. It would be great if they picked up on decisions from ME1 and 2 and made those have a great impact in ME3 and how you are able to solve issues and complete the game. That would also create interest to go back to ME1 and 2 and experiment with different outcomes and see how it plays out in ME3 *wishful thinking*.
Indeed. Fortunately, we have been given indication by Bioware of something like this. They did acknowledge that due to the fact that it is the end of the trilogy, they no longer have to worry about the potential logistical mess of importing to another game - there is no ME4 that is Shepard's story, Shepard's story ends with ME3. I do hope that we are not forced into deplorable endings simply due to our actions in ME1 and ME2, not only would that likely hurt new players to ME3, that would also steer into the "you made the wrong decisions" direction, which is the wrong way to go in my opinion. Getting everyone killed in ME2 should have some consequenes of course, and may be the exception to what I am saying. But let's say that destroying the base means your LI dies because the Reapers were too powerful. That would feel pretty cheap wouldn't it? ME1 and ME2 decisions, possibly with the exceptions of who survived the suicide mission (it's not really a moral choice after all) should make the road harder or easier, and never impossible.
Yea I agree it would be bad if something you did in ME1 is determining if your LI lives or dies. It doesn't have to be as white or black consequences though or as dramatic. For instance, you saved the rachni queen and at a certain point in ME3 rachni comes to help you and gives you a better option then if you killed her (rewarding paragon, punishing renegade). You let Elnora (asari merc in samaras recruitment mission) go and she comes back with a merc band and ambushes you, making everything much harder (reward renegade, punish paragon).
From a marketing point of view there could be a point to reward players who played ME1 and 2 though. It would also create incentives for new players to actually go and buy ME1 and 2 if they see that you can alter outcomes by how you choose to solve issues in the previous games.
I think we will see the consequences of our actions. I suspect (given the hints in ME2) that we'll be assembling an army from whatever specifies we've befriended - rachni, krogan, quarians, Geth etc. (Hmmmm....this is starting to sound familiar: "Dwarves, Elves, Mages, this Arl Eamon.....sounds like an army to me!")
Anyway, I may be grasping at straws but if you saved the Rachni queen she sends a message telling you she'll be there if you need here and depending upon what you did with Tali's father, you get a message from one of teh Admirals either offering to aid you in future or telling you that you'll be losing out by not helping them conquer the Geth. So I think that our actions in both games do count in the long run and will influence what happens for us in ME3.
