You guys are harsh on the cheaters.The way I always thought of it was: in ME2 the relationship's already over. Granted we have metagame knowledge that it's not quite the case, but shep doesn't. It's not really about cheating or not but about how ready shep is to move on. IMHO.
I view it as the relationship is "on the rocks".
Just because you have a big fight with your SO does NOT mean that it gives you the right to go screw around with someone else. They never said it was over. There was a difference of opinion and a fight.
IMO, Shepard ought to be mature enough to hold off on breaking up (if that's what is desired) until the mission is over. That way everyone can talk like rational adults. If the other party isn't willing to talk things though (highly unlikely) then there's nothing more Shepard could have done.
This is exactly how I view my Shep's take on things. In her mind it's "survive the damn mission, stop the collectors and deal with her relationship afterwards".
Course dealing with the relationship afterwards might entail kidnapping Kaidan and keeping him locked in her cabin on the Normandy till things are resolved.
