I honestly don't know what I would do in that situation. If the story is great, and the rest of the squad is well developed, but Kaidan has been mauled yet again as a character, I may stay away completely, out of bitterness. But if something did pull me in, despite my favorite character being minimalized, I guess I would just not have a LI for the third game. Maybe I'd check out what they do with Liara, but other than that, I don't see them creating another love interest I'd prefer.

I'll probably end up being the only Sharrus author y'all read and the only Shenko one the Garrus Girls read. I think I can live with that.

Hmm...I was just thinking about people who chose Kaidan as an LI in the first game and got mad at him in the second, and whether there was anything he could do in the third game that would make those people want to choose him again. I doubt there are many people in this thread who are in that situation, so I thought I would put the opposite scenario out there as a topic of discussion: if Kaidan *doesn't* have a satisfying role in ME3 (small cameo, still doesn't trust Shepard, is indoctrinated by Reapers, etc...) would you go back to ME2 and choose another LI? Or go to a different LI in ME3, if one is available?

Honestly? There just isn't another LI in ME2 that I am really interested in. Even if they did something truly horrible to Kaidan's character in ME3, I wouldn't romance another with my Shepard. She would be single if things didn't work out.

If they do that, I don't think I'll buy the game, especially not new. I'd view it as a complete broken promise from the devs after what they've said. So, from the principle alone I wouldn't buy the third game.
I wouldn't go back and pick an ME2 LI either. None of them seemed to progress naturally; it seems that the devs were concerned about "ninja romances" so they made it so that Shepard had to come on very strongly to the new LIs. Besides that, none of them appealed to me at all and there's 100% no way that I can see my Shepard with any of them.

My Shep would stay single.
None of the ME2 LIs appealed enough to me even to romance them with a "romance free" fresh ME2 game.

If they did that, I think even Meghan would be badly effected.

This too.
Dunno what my single dudeShep is going to do. I honestly haven't been able to work up the ambition to start another playthrough; ME2 is much less interesting than ME1. I may not even get the paramor achievement.
It's not because I'm pissed off because my favorite character didn't get into the game. They changed a lot of stuff and the overall tone of the franchise has changed so drastically that I don't feel that it's my kind of game anymore.

No... just let them fall.... They're nice and baggy, he's not wearing a belt.... they're barely balancing on his hips....

I think it's hard to say if the actual tone of the franchise has been changed. ME2 is like the Empire Strikes Back of the original Star Wars trilogy. It's tone was dramatically different than A New Hope, but it makes perfect sense in the telling of the full trilogy. I'm back in my cautiously optimistic land of the full story will make this chapter make better sense.

Also, Fort, you've said you're not usually a Sci-fi fan. ME2 is very much more a heavily science fiction story than ME1 was. ME1 was more heroic adventure. ME2 is more hard Sci-fi, including even the "flavor" of the LI's. So, I can understand the concern with where ME3 is going for those of you who aren't sci-fi fans.
