Sia if you're still lurking, just finished reading your latest update to the Rescue.
You do love to torture your characters.
Interesting way to end the chapter
I actually just started reading it last night, still working my way through and it I really love it.
But the thing you point out, Shenzi... why do authors put their main character or their favorite 'NPC' character through things like battles, wounds and torture? I do that myself, my favorite characters tend to suffer the most.
Is it because the agony they endured makes the rescue so much sweeter?
Somtimes I wonder if it is just my sadistic side that demands tribute.
I think writers want to add adventure and drama to their writing, and that's very welcome, as long as they're not writing the characters completely out of character or grossly creepy...certain fanfics I've come across come to mind...
I would never want to read a fic that makes Kaidan into some massive, evil jerk, for instance, or has Shepard killing her love interest...but adding action to a story is appreciated, I would like to make my next story more action oriented and not just romance. Not that I mind romance oriented stories at all, but I think it would be good for me to branch out.
Glad you liked it, Shenzi! I try to add as much drama and action because frankly, exposition and nothing but wall-to-wall characterization bores me. And if bores me, my readers won't read me.
Write what you like, the audience will follow.
