I think some aspects of ME1 were better and some parts of ME2 were. I liked the greater degree of specialization and customizability skills-wise in ME1. I also liked the elevator banter (don't kill me!).
However, overall, I'd have to say I prefer ME2. While there are something that were changed that I didn't feel needed to be changed or even didn't want changed I think that ME2, overall, deepens the ME universe while also adding a rich cast of characters and honoring the legacy of ME1. I can see why others would feel differently, but after an initial shock from the stark difference between the two games, I eventually came to love ME2 more. And I'm going to have to disagree about the noncombat areas in ME1 vs. those in ME2. I think ME2's hub areas felt much more alive than the stagnant, archetypically sterile RPG enviros of ME1.
Doesn't mean I wouldn't support bringing some elements of ME1 back in ME2. But overall, I think BioWare improved the formula.
Just my opinion though. No need to go spreading it around.
Hey, I preferred the elevators too!
Personally, and I think you'll see the same thing in many of the ME1 LI threads, I found that a large part of my enjoyment of ME2 was squashed by the way my favorite love interest was written out of the story -- I know the Virmire Survivor is coming back, and I know that Liara will most likely have a large role to play in the future -- but for the whole of ME2, I was stuck in a game where I felt like I was being railroaded down a path I didn't feel comfortable with at all. If I were in control of my Shepard, I would have definitely made it a priority to rejoin the Alliance, have Kaidan and Liara rejoin my team, and not recruit certain teammates who were forced on me in ME2. I did enjoy the game for what it was, but it wasn't as fun, or as interesting to me, as ME1 was. And there is very little replayability, whereas with ME1, I couldn't put it down for months.
I also prefer more explorable areas, and more side quests with puzzles and dialogue, which the N7 missions lacked. Basically, ME2 is moving in a direction that I'm not interested in, as an RPG fan. I'm willing to give ME3 a chance, but if they take even more options away from us, and give us fewer roleplaying choices than before, I'm not going to be a happy consumer.
