Erm, sorry.  Punchy today.  That was lovely.  (Despite the blue vomit.)  ;)  You have a very emotionally awkward Shepard.  She's cute.  :P

Hey Jaer, how's ASW2 coming along? I think I speak for most people here when I saw we're all really looking forward to reading it :D

I had a character from ME2 become a player and I needed to understand her a bit more, specifically from a guy's gaming perspective...so I'm playing the game as mShep for research, lol. But I hate the import canon for ME2, so I started ME1 with a MShep so I could have the options I needed for ME2. Finished ME1 last night, started ME2 last night. MShep's butt looks much better in ME2. Kaidan still looks hideous in the Phoenix armor. Oh, but it was funny choosing the neutral option in the intro w/mShep and having Kaidan crash into him rather than the wall. The VA for mShep is doing a better job this time round, too. Not great, but better than ME1.

ASW2 is currently 16,000 words, give me another week and a half, two weeks and it should be done, I don't need an entire ME2 playthrough to get what I need, just character specific scenes.
Couple Talk will probably be done first and has about 2,000 and shouldn't be much longer. You'll probably see it this weekend.

jaer, i just read your fanfic. that's awesome! i love your take on shepard - it's hard to get a read on her sometimes, like when she feels like a man wearing a woman's body. i like what you did with her character.  your take on how things should play out in me3 makes me smile.

Thank you! Glad you liked it!

Just to clarify...my Shep doesn't feel like a man in a woman's body. She feels more confident with armor & weapons because that's where her skills have been proven. She knows what to expect and how to act around those in a military setting because that's where she's most comfortable, where she's spent most of her time. She's had less experience with wearing dresses, dating, etc, so she's less comfortable. Since we don't have friendships in ME, just either sleeping with or not talking too, she doesn't have anyone she could really go to for advice in a dating situation, either. She's more tomboy than anything, really. Never wanted to be a man, simply liked playing with the boys. ;)

It brings an interesting dynamic to her relationship with Kaidan because there really isn't anyone else she'll have a heart to heart with and she has difficulty even opening up to him.

BTW, Sage, your summary of the various backgrounds and the comments...that's gold for someone who fics in the ME universe. Thanks for doing it.

@ jaer - i hope i didn't imply that *your* shep was mannish. not at all. i think that's why i'm loving your guys' fanfic - it's giving me another way of looking at femshep. *i* sometimes found that i'd be roleplaying along in the game, thinking of my shep one way and then something hits me that makes her feel like they just superimposed her over some stereotypical male hero. because, well, at times they sorta did. i'm mainly thinking here of the way she sits when talking to garrus down in the crewdeck.

my last shep i tried to play as very womanly - yeah, that just didn't work. she's got nothing on miranda in the girly girl department, so why bother? so this shep i'm sort of letting her be the tomboy in my mind, and i like it much better. tho is it me, or did shepard get a little more gritty in me2? maybe it's just the uniform.

Yeah she was never in contact with her emotions and now that the can is open she doesn't know what to do with it, and for some strange reason is taking me to places I had never thought I would go.  I know that she never opened up before, but wow.  A lot of this just wrote itself.

@Sage...oh, my Shep is 'mannish'. She swears, she's more likely to solve a situation by shooting/punching something rather than negotiate. I imagine she could probably drink most of the Normandy crew under the table. Kaidan brings out her softer side because it is there, she just likes to keep it deeply buried so no one will think she's weak. He's one of the few, possibly the only, who gets to see it. It's why, particularly in GT3, he isn't worried about the shenanigans she pulls. He knows a part of her the rest probably won't ever know.

This is why I mentally edit that scene so that both my Shep's are sitting correctly.  I mean, geez!  Not even Meghan who actually ends up liking Garrus like that would give him that much of a preview. ;)

I had a flashback to the image of Shep sitting inappropriately in the black dress talking to Garrus when I read the works "sitting correctly" . Posted Image

The developers couldn't have done that on purpose could they?

The Shepard in ME one was much more graceful then the one in ME2 - also she could dance and the one in ME2 not so much.  I thought that was a bit odd.  That she changed so much.

I know it's late but happy 1400 pages Kaidanites!

What no bonfire? ;) Thanks Pyro!

And Morning all. I too have been wondering how strong Kaidan is as a L2. Then again, he's not an adept.
Which also raises the question why Kaidan isn't an adept but a sentinel. It's odd but despite me loving the whole 'flaring up' thing, Kaidan was always more of a field medic to me in ME1. I trained those skills first and depending on who else I took, I even raised his tech skills.
If he's as powerful as an Asari on a biotic level, then why isn't he more specialized as a biotic? Why 'waste' his potential on tech as well? Just wondering. Could be his own love for tech and tinkering ofcourse.

I just always figured that part of the reason he was trained that way was the whole "holding back" on his biotic abilities issue.  Perhaps the alliance didn't realize how powerful he was because of it?

Mmmmm... Kaidan...Posted Image
I'm playing through ME1 again, as a Sentinal this time.
Not getting enough Kaidan, because I'm trying to get the Wrex and Garrus achievements.
That and I wonder about having 2 sentinals in the group at one time.Posted Image

EDIT: Just wondering here:  Am I the only one that heard Miranda say that if Shep didn't come out of Lazurous the "same exact person" they would have failed... and then proceeded to make a Shep of every class, because something "horrible" would happen if I wasn't "the same"?

The male says I'm crazy for this, so... thought I'd ask.

Anyway... back to laundry.  *lurker mode: on*Posted Image

Each squadmate in ME1 more or less aligns with one of the classes that you can pick as Shepard. So I imagine Kaidan doesn't take the Adept role because Liara already has that filled. I think it makes a lot more sense that way, honestly. What else could a bookish archeologist like Liara offer in combat? Well, she's an asari, so she has a natural talent for using biotics. But for Kaidan, he's an Alliance officer, trained to rely on more than just his biotics.

Besides, if Kaidan didn't have those awesome tech powers and neural shock, he probably wouldn't have been part of my Team Awesome all throughout ME1.

I do like thinking that after he left BAaT, he was trying to focus on any skill that wasn't biotic related. I like to think he latched on to the medic position because he wanted to view himself as a healer and not the killer who took out Vyrnnus. I'd even go so far to say that he only moderately kept up with his biotic training once he joined the Alliance, trying to rely on the other skills he had until the events of Eden Prime showed him that his biotics weren't so much a curse anymore.

Actually, come to think of it, I wonder if Kaidan viewed his biotics as a curse. After what happened at BAaT, I'd think so.

I'd be inclined to agree with you, as far as that last goes.  And especially if Shep's a biotic, too, his attitude would get that adjustment after Eden Prime.

^ that, is almost exactly how I've always considered it.  BAaT leads to biotics being bad and dangerous, so he learns other ways to do things so as not to rely on them.  But, after Eden Prime, where he had to use them to help the colonists, either because Shep asked him to or because she was doing so as well, if your Shep's biotic, he realizes he's been holding onto an out-of-date mindset.

And, have I mentioned that, in my head, Kaidan says "yes ma'am" just like Wesley says "as you wish"?  :wub:Cause, I feel the need to share my spectacularly fluffy imagination.  :P

Don't even need the "yes." He says, "Ma'am," sometimes just like that.

Which is where me thinking Kal'Reegar has the hots for Tali comes from.  Adam Baldwin delivers that line just like that.

I'm quite fond of the Kal'Reegar/Tali'Zorah relationship possibilities. But I've found even mentioning the idea of it drives a lot of Talimancers crazy, as if I was suggesting Kal'Reegar was going to compete for their girl.

Well, Tali isn't my Shepard's girl, so I don't see why she can't get her Quarian lovin' elsewhere.

Exactly.  And Baldwin never gets the girl.  He needs to get the girl at some point, sheesh.  It's not like Meghan or Avery Shepard are interested in our favorite quarian engineer.

@Sia: Adam Baldwin is awesome. And you're right, Kal'Reegar and Kaidan both totally pull it off with just a 'ma'am'. Kal'Reegar desperately needs to be in ME3. Please?

(oh, and random dArt addiction continues, courtesy of ErothBlackDragon this time...)

@Pac: Yes, my Kaidan still calls her ma'am. Cause of the Spectre thing. And it's cute. I've mentioned their ridiculous levels of cuteness about five times today, but... there you go. They're cute.

I'm now curious to see how that works. On Noveria, you can play Shepard's Spectre status as superceding that of others, even though Noveria technically isn't even Council space. But when Shepard is talking to Admiral Kahoku or Mikhailovich, she can play the role of lower ranking officer.

Guess in ME1's case, she's so new to the Spectre role, she still has that Alliance training on how to act around superior officers. In ME2, during the playthrough where the Council was dead and Anderson is Councilor, Shepard will initially greet him as Captain Anderson, but not in the manner of one greeting a superior officer. So even if you roleplay Shepard as still loyal to the Alliance, is she truly no longer part of the Alliance military?

Anyway, could see Kaidan insisting on calling her "ma'am" in an almost smartass/affectionate sort of way. I view his humor to be incredibly subtle that way. "Salute anything you can't eat or kill" indeed.
