And I can't bring myself to sacrifice my characters in DA, and I *really* can't help but romance Alistair and/or Zevran...no noble virginal characters for me.

i started several chars who were neither. but...well, i *really* didn't like da:o. i won't dwell on it, because it makes me mad. lol

so i play ME and stay happy.

i think part of why i gave up alistair to anora so easily though was because i kept comparing him to kaidan. i just wanted my biotic back.

Ah, I saw the alert and was confused, I was wondering how I missed chapter 7 earlier.  I like it!

I totally understand how you feel about Dragon Age, although I still enjoy the characters and the setting.  There's no real way to have a happy ending, no matter what, you either die, or you're a Grey Warden who will end up in the Deep Roads.  And surviving means you do something that could be very, very bad for the future of the world.  Not very cheery.

And I love bittersweet love stories in movies and books, but I get too invested in characters in video games.  I want to pretend that my character will have a happy life after I'm done with the game, and nowadays it's rare that a game will actually allow that to happen.  Ugh.  Angst does not automatically equal depth or brilliance.

I just hope the ME writers have the same sort of philosophy.  I just want to believe that my Shepard and Kaidan will go off and have more adventures at the end of the game, that's not too much to ask for, right?

The Kaidan Elevator conversations

--
Ashley: It’s strange. The Geth are attacking, and everyone around here is still worried about ordinary business.
Kaidan: It’s politics, Williams. The Council won’t raise the alarm until they’re certain about the threat.
Ashley: The threat? Did they not see the vids of Eden Prime? See, this is why I hate politics.

Kaidan: So, Williams, are you happy you signed on with Commander Shepard?
Ashley: I’m not sure, Lieutenant. Every time I think I have a handle on things, the universe banks hard to port.
Kaidan: Well, don’t let anybody know. A big gun and a confident attitude will get you through a lot in life.

Ashley: How are you holding up Lieutenant?
Kaidan: Not too bad. No headaches worth mentioning lately. Maybe I’m getting used to the strain.
Ashley: Maybe you’ve just got a good stress release. I know that knocking the Geth on their synthetic asses gets rid of my headaches.

Kaidan: Those Asari commandos are impressive. Lightly armoured, but their speed more than makes up for it.
Ashley: Unless that speed lets them outrun bullets, I’m more inclined to stick with nice solid armor and a big gun.
Kaidan: Point taken.

--

Kaidan: Saren was one of the most respected Turians in the galaxy, Garrus. Are you going to be okay going up against him?
Garrus: Saren is either a traitor or a madman. Taking him down will restore the good name of Turians everywhere.
Kaidan: Just keep saying that, especially to humans. We’ve got a lot of angry people right now.

Kaidan: Well, Garrus, any regrets about leaving Citadel Security?
Garrus: Fighting a rogue Spectre with countless lives at stake and no regulations to get in the way? I’d say that beats C-Sec.
Kaidan: Well, we don’t lack for excitement, that’s for sure.

Garrus: I’d love to see what the Normandy can do in a fight.
Kaidan: The Normandy isn’t built for a stand-up fight. I’d rather rely on the IES than the shields.
Garrus: But the stealth drive adds a new tactical level to a space combat as we know it. Surprise attacks, undetected flanking maneuvers…
Kaidan: I don’t know, Garrus. I’d rather not be the first one up the ladder in terms of figuring out new tactics.

Garrus: Your biotics are impressive, Lieutenant. I’m surprised that humans stopped using the L2 configuration with results like yours.
Kaidan: My headaches can be pretty bad, and I’m one of the lucky L2 implants. The L3’s are safer.
Garrus: Humanity will be judged by the sacrifices its people are willing to make, Lieutenant. The Turians would have kept the L2 implants.

--
Kaidan: I’m surprised you’re willing to fight Krogan, Wrex. I thought you’d stand with your own.
Wrex: Anyone who fights us is either stupid or on Saren’s payroll. Killing the latter is business. Killing the former is a favor to the universe.

Kaidan: I haven’t spent much time with any Krogan before, Wrex. I have to say, you’re not what I expected.
Wrex: Right. Because you humans have a wide range of cultures and attitudes, but Krogan all think and act exactly alike.
Kaidan: Look, I didn’t mean ---- Just forget I said something.
Wrex: Done.

Wrex: Youv’e got impressive biotic power. Humans should never have switched to the weaker L3 implants.
Kaidan: My headaches can be pretty bad, and I’m one of the lucky L2 implants. The L3’s are safer.
Wrex: You don’t stop using a gun just because the kickback has a little sting.

Wrex: So tell me, who’d win in a fight between you and Shepard?
Kaidan: What? Commander Shepard is my superior officer. I can’t imagine us ever having to fight.
Wrex: You can’t? That’s why Shepard’s your superior officer. And that’s why Shepard would win.

--
Kaidan: I’ve heard some humans are angry at the Quarians after the attack on Eden Prime. After all, you created the Geth.
Tali: The Geth killed billions and forced us from our homeworld. Most Quarians believe we have paid properly for our mistake.
Kaidan: Hopefully having you with us fighting Saren will change people’s minds.

Kaidan: Tali, why do you Quarians wear those suits all the time? Is it a cultural thing?
Tali: No. Living in the clean environment of the flotilla has weakened our immune systems. The environmental suits protect against diseases.
Kaidan: Oh. Well, I’ll try not to sneeze.

Kaidan: Are you okay, Tali? It looked like you got some dirty looks back there.
Tali: Many think less of Quarians for traveling in the flotilla, and for creating the Geth. They see us as scavengers, little better than thieves.
Kaidan: Forget them. Anyone that ignorant isn’t worth listening to, anyway.

Tali: Is it true humans stopped using the biotic implants you were fitted with, Lieutenant?
Kaidan: My headaches can be pretty bad, and I'm one of the lucky L2 implants. The L3's are safer.
Tali: That makes sense. What use is harnessing that power if it causes more harm than good to your people?
--

Kaidan: It must be nice to be back in civilization after so long in those Prothean ruins.
Liara: No. Cities and stations were always my mother's area of comfort. I actually enjoy the solitude of dig sites.
Kaidan: When this is all over, you'll be able to go back to your rocks and ruins for as long as you'd like.

Liara: Lieutenant? In the last few fights, your biotics seemed to pack more punch. Is it practice, or are you actually getting stronger?
Kaidan: I've always held back a little when I used my powers on living targets. Fear of hurting someone, I guess.
Kaidan: After what I saw on Eden Prime, I'm not holding back any more. Not against the Geth, not against anyone.

Kaidan: Liara, if your people don't need implants to use biotics, how come Asari don't use biotics mroe often?
Liara: While the Asari have natural biotic abilities, not all have the desire nor the skill to use their abilities effectively.
Kaidan: Are you kidding? To have that ability, without implants, and choose not to learn? I'll never understand the Asari.

Kaidan: Hearing about the Protheans makes me wonder if some distant civilization is going to find our artifacts someday and study us.
Liara: I have often wondered the same thing, Lieutenant. Artifacts of vanished cultures are reminders of our own mortality.
Kaidan: I'm not afraid to die. I guess I just want to be remembered by more than a few trinkets in a ruin somewhere.
--

Reminds me of how nice a guy Kaidan is. It's refreshing. Lots of wisdom in what he says as well.

Thanks for reminding me; I'm saving that quote for the next troll that stops by. Right next to Carth's, "You'd think people would be a little more tolerant in this day and age. I guess stupidity and ignorance will never go out of style."

He is nice. Another theme I noticed is that people are sometimes rather flippant about his implants and migraines.

Yes, the squad has different opinions about it. Garrus and Wrex seem to think that the headaches are just something that has to be tolerated rather than using less painful implants.

The one where he says Wrex is not what he expected- I think it's funny it was taken as a negative right away - with the Krogan wars you would think Wrex wouldn't have reacted that way.

Wrex reacts quite curmudgeonly to any comments about the krogan stereotype. I think it's a touchy subject for him, particularly since he is somewhat of a black sheep among krogan.

I imagine both krogan and turians have a threshold for pain that exceeds humans. The concept of a debilitating migraine is probably quite foreign to them.

It's essentially the worst hangover ever and I'd imagine that they've had that experience before...

IMO they're probably being ignorant. Kaidan handled the situation gracefully though. I wouldn't have been able to do the same.

On the other hand, they're from warrior species. In their mind, any military advantage is worth the sacrifice.

ETA: Also, I think the worst hangover ever would just ****** Wrex off more and improve his fighting.

I think it's rather short sighted of them to say that humans/Kaidan are lesser for switching to less painful implants.

In character, though. Remember, Garrus is one of the few squadmates who'd encourage Shepard to think about keeping the Collector base. It's a military advantage. Probably the Turian view of sacrifice to serve the whole.

But I bet anything Wrex just has a larger threshold for pain.

If the *minimal* side effect from the implants is having your head hurt so badly that you're in a dark room wishing for death so that pain will stop, then it's still ignorant to say that the extra power is worth it.

It's one of those situations where they won't understand unless they're in that situation... I doubt it has anything to do with pain tolerance or whatnot.

I agree with fortunesque on this.

@Pacifien: Yea, it is in character. Never disputed that. Just disagreed with what they said or implied.

Such a thoughtful guy... and funny too.

I love seeing the little snippets of his personality when it breaks free of his control.

But Kaidan isn't like that all the time, so they probably think his pain is worth it considering he's still an able soldier.

They're probably advocating further development of the L2. Couple generations of monumental fail, but an eventual tweaking of the design that leads toward fewer side effects but strong capabilities. They're making a general dig at humanity for being too weak to make the sacrifice, really.

I'm not saying I agree with their view.

I think pain tolerance is one of the defining characteristics of being krogan.

I'm not saying they aren't. I'm just saying that nobody would fully understand how L2s feel unless they experienced the side effects for themselves or felt something comparable. I'm willing to bet that some humans, like Cerberus, would have supported keeping L2s in use and refining them slowly because it'd be a 'necessary risk'.

Anyway, what I was trying to say was that Kaidan understands this and it's very good of him to not hold it against folks or become bitter about his lot in life. =]

I almost want to say that's his main appeal until I realized I married a guy like that, and nice guy traits wear thin when you want to have a proper argument.

Wow, they really aged him. That's not just texturing improvements.

Ashley still looks the same, though. But I guess she was much younger than both Shepard and Kaidan at the beginning of ME1.

you're right. but is it me, or does he look tired in ME2? two years of mourning shepard have not agreed with poor kaidan. he needs lovin'

He looks tired and aged. The whole thing sucks because I'm pretty sure Ash didn't age at all.
