I seriously hope they come up with separate storylines for Ashley and Kaidan in ME3.

Ashidan really needs to have ended with Horizon.

Yeah, if they do develop the characters separately and don't treat them as the same person, then yes, I can see Kaidan as a Spectre.

I don't really know why I can't see Ashley as one.

Other than the higher rank, there is still the issue of her grandfather.  It would be hard to believe that the turian Councillor would be willing to make a Williams a Spectre.

Also, as much as I love Ash, and think she's a capable soldier, she didn't have an illustrious career before joining the Normandy's crew.  Kaidan was hand picked by Anderson, which means he must have had a noteworthy record up to that point.

And good morning, Night, and everyone!  I'm really loving the fanfiction that people are putting out lately.  It's inspiring!

Okay so I pulled out all the really dirty parts so you guys wouldn't get pulled into the convoluted cesspool that is my mind.  What's left is a short chapter that is beyond sappy, even for me (if you can belive it, I can't - Maybe I sould start writing about my other Shepard, she is much stronger - and not as emotioanlly backward.  But Zin is screaming louder right now).

We are nearing the end of ME and aproching the ME2 arc,  I started writing it but It's not coming as fast as ME did and so I should slow down.  The DA fics Shenzi gave me should help (If I would start to read them).

So without further ado:    Chapter 20 is live.

It's all about the pair....

That is one thing I'd like to learn more about. We hear from Chakwas and other sources that Kaidan is a decorated soldier, with mountains of achievements. Knowing that is nice, and makes the Virmire decision a little less scarring for my Shepards, but I'd really like to know how Kaidan earned them exactly. I'd love to hear those tales - how one operation turned out in a completely unexpected way and Kaidan ended up prevailing against seemingly impossible odds or something. So I think there's a lot of potential for us to learn about how and why Kaidan has so many medals.

I'm not so certain. I think the Reapers are going to take one look at Kaidan in his heart shape boxers and go "Damn, this guy means business. We better pack up and leave."

If one had the foresight to save Kaidan in ME1, I suspect this is how the Reapers will be defeated in the next game.

yeah. instead of a specter, they've made him into a SpecBer: special reconnaissance and boxer services.

:police:

or...maybe not. weighing in on the specter question, i'm with sia - as ashaiden - nope. on kaidan's own...mebbe. whose fanfic had that? it was well done there, but somehow i wonder if bioware would bother. they barely mentioned shep's own spectre status...or specter. i have american spellcheck - it has issues with that word.

Although the quality is wildly varying, that is one thing I like about the Star Wars Extended Universe.  If there's a character that is even mildly interesting, someday, a book or comic about that character's life will be written.

Hmm, books about characters like Kaidan, or Wrex, or Garrus, that are set before the events of the first game, would be very interesting, and wouldn't mess with canon.  Bioware likes milking this franchise, they should get on this idea!

I think the general storylines will stay the same for both Kaidan and Ash, I doubt they will write two seperate paths for the Virmire survivor. They were saved for ME3 so that means 'bigger' roles, whatever that means since their role in ME2 is so small. An extra 5 minutes of screentime is bigger as well, you know.

I just hope they don't copy and paste too much and if they do, they should add in details and not be lazy with using the same armor. I just have a feeling little will change, after all aren't most of the scenes in ME1 the same for them as well? For me seperation will also work with just details like Kaidan's helmet at the start of ME2. Give him a pistol, not an AR, let him use biotics or an omni-tool, give him his own armor and station him somewhere specific for his character. I can't see him cleaning guns all day nor can I see Ash tinkering with screens...to use a ME1 example.

Kaidan and Ash are totally different characters, the whole Virmire survivor general stuff just doesn't work with two characters like that. Had they been the same types, the same class or whatever you can easily swap one for the other but they wrote them as seperate characters in ME1, then one had to die and now they are one character or so it feels.
The whole Virmire scene should not have included a female and male LI. They created that mess themselves. Whether it was Ash or any other squadmate had little impact on the Virmire situation other than me liking Ash more than say Wrex. But I would never kill off Kaidan anyway.

But I guess they chose Ash and Kaidan because those playing both a femshep as a male shepard will have romanced both in their games so there's more emotion involved or something. Since I only play femsheps, that ship doesn't sail for me. So now I have to watch as my LI runs around in girl armor because the other Virmire survivor is a woman. *rolls eyes* Yeah, technically Phoenix armor is for both males and females but to me it's Ash's signature armor.

Since the ME2 LI's could all possibly be dead as well, I wonder which characters they will 'merge'. We might get to see Thane in Jack's armor or Jacob in Miranda's for all we know :P

Nah, I'm going to have a little bit of faith and believe Bioware has a plan for both Ash and Kaidan that will do them both justice without having to write two seperate story arcs (which I believe they won't.)

For me, Kaidan as a Spectre was a logical choice...although I doubt BW has given it much thought. Udina the Politician pushed to get Shepard a Spectre because of the status it gave humanity. Whether you saved or killed the Council, that need for that status doesn't go away, in fact it increases. In many ways, Shepard's death was a huge benefit to what had to have been Udina's political goals for humanity. He would want a replacement for Shepard ASAP and Kaidan fits the bill to a T. Decorated Marine, helped save the Citadel, was a crewmember with Shepard, hand picked by Anderson, a powerful functioning human Biotic, all of this is great political material to push Kaidan through as a Spectre.
As a random thought, whether he knows it or not, Udina has most likely met The Illusive Man.

But all of the reasons I state for Kaidan are all of the reasons Ash would not be a Spectre. She's toxic, politically speaking. Her family's history, the chip she has on her shoulder toward those in authority over her because of her family history, her distrust of aliens, all of it would make her a poor choice politically and militarily.

Don't see why not.  Your assesment on the Spectre status makes a lot of sense.  The Ashley factor does kind of bind Biowares hands if they keep treating them as the same character... we will have to wait and see how they handle it.  As long as they add lots of Kaidan, I will be pleased.

Hi, Shenzi!! Yeah, having my work comp down for 3 days has put a real cramp in everything including my fic writing since I do most of it in my down time at work. However, ASW2 is moving easily so I should be able to make up time.

@Jho...your beat up Kaidan had perfect timing. I just abused the poor darling (not in a good way) and when Shepard finds out, someone will pay.

*perks up* did I hear ASW2 is comming out soon?

Poor Kai Kai, at least Shepard will kiss it and make it better after she beats the crap out of the person(s) who dared lay a hand on her man.

huh. slightly off topic, but playing through ME1 again, i'm suddenly hit with the thought that banes = illusive man?

you remember banes? the guy was working on top secret alliance stuff (via wiki), then was supposedly dead, then is making threats. everyone who found his "body" went missing thanks to cerberus. and the illusive man sure doesn't look like a normal dude - more like he's been tampered with. maybe shepard isn't the first to be "brought back"

looked in the "read this before posting spoilers" thread and saw nothing on the guy.

well i guess it's not off topic. am collecting theories for a possible FF take on me2

I'd bet good money he and TIM are one and the same.  It's unusual for a Bioware quest to end in a dead end like that one did.

I don't know about being brought back, per se, as much as just heavily augmented.

I also think Miranda's dad is the Shadow Broker.

And to stay on topic:

@Sage...I've heard the Banes theory before but it doesn't work for me for a couple of reasons.

1. Banes is hands on working on top Secret Stuff. TIM strikes me as more of a Godfather type...he has people who do that so he doesn't have to.

2. Banes is spending too much time hiding. It takes a lot of effort to stage a disappearance, and if his 'body' is missing, he's inept as well. TIM is inept when his ego gets in the way, not because he hasn't thought through the implications.

3. People in hiding don't contact other people and while I sincerely doubt that the image we see of TIM is what he actually looks like, he's in contact with a lot of people on a regular basis.

@ Shenzi...probably early next week for ASW2. Depends on how work goes, ironically enough. I'm debating the rating already. Does Teen include petting? And is Mature for all sex scenes or just graphic?

Also, someone mentioned that the interaction between Kaidan and Shep in Couple Talk was 'cute' is that a good or a bad thing???
