Making the rounds of all the character threads, because I started wondering where all the squadmates would like to go if they visited Earth. Kaidan is unique in that he is actually from Earth. So do you think he has a particular preference for one area versus another? He mentions his family retiring to Vancouver, but does that mean he likes the area as well? And since he is from Earth, I'll expand the question to ask where in the greater galaxy you think he'd like to visit? Did the Presidium suit him? We know the Wards didn't.

I think that's one of the best things about Kaidan's character. He's essentially normal and believable. He could fit in just about any historical setting pretty well. Wearing a powdered wig riding in a coach? Yep. Cowboy-hatted and charming the schoolmarm? Sure. Toga? Heck, yeah!

For some reason cowboy-style Kaidan charming the schoolmarm was such a delicious image it totally killed my ability to write about him on the Normandy.  Killed it dead, I tell ya.  (The horse scene in Jaer's ASW has a similar effect on me.  Never knew I had a cowboy fetish.  *snickers*  Oh, wait, it's a Kaidan fetish... that's right.)

Really... dusty jeans and cowboy boots, sweaty cowboy hat and bandana... raowr. :bandit:<-- bandana smiley! :o

On the whole reunion thing... I think it really depends on how you played the original relationship.  Jumping right back into bed isn't always the healthiest relationship move, but when you have no clue how to reconnect to someone, sometimes it's easier to start with the physical relationship and then work on the rest of it.  (And sometimes re-establishing that connection before you start dealing with dangerous things like /words/ can be a really good idea.)

However much I like that potential dynamic, however, I cannot imagine any way to make it work in a video game, so I must agree with Fort.  (Dang, that happens to me a lot. )  I hope BioWare builds it more slowly, but has it integrated into the game as something other than 'night before the big battle, oh yeah, I really do still love you, spend the night with me!'.  Cause, that'd be kinda lousy at this point.

Yeah, the only thing that got me off of Shep-schoolmarm was the toga...on a chariot...with horses.

Oi, I sidetracked myself!  What i wanted to write was that I hope ME3 is more a series of massive battles than one "night before" situation.  While there would have to be some build-up to battling the Reapers it would be awesome if the romance and the whole war took a while to heat up and then stayed...uh...involved for quite some time.  I can't write that without it sounding dirty.  I just can't.

@legbamel We loves our gutter, don't we? (Though the toga really doesn't um... inspire my imagination the same way as the cowboy. Sheriff Alenko!)

And unavoidable innuendo notwithstanding, I like how you think. ME3 should be BIG in story and action and romance, not a slow building plot again. We already did the slow build thing. We should be /there/ right off the bat, with Reapers and alliances and some huge galaxy-wide grand scale SOMETHING. Not that I have a clue what the grand something should be, but... there you go.

@Pacifien: I think Kaidan would have a soft spot for Earth, and his family's home. I always got the impression he had a nice childhood prior to BAaT, and whether he and his family every reconnected, they did give him a place to come home to afterwards, however little they may (or may not) have ever comprehended what really happened to him out at Brain Camp. (That whole dynamic has definitely been left up the imagination so far. I love the varying takes on his family in fic.)

He's obviously not into the crowds of people thing, so I always assume he'd be the type who'd like a nice vacation in the boonies. Camping, mountains, beaches... something outside and active, with a nice place to read or tinker or something in the evenings. As I don't think he's good at actually having nothing to do.

As far as the rest of the galaxy goes... the ludicrously cheesy answer would be he likes wherever Shep wants to go. *snickers*

I can definitely see him getting antsy with nothing to do for too long. He might enjoy some snuggle time but after the first day (er, night?) he'd be bored to tears. If he fished, he'd fly fish rather than sitting in a boat waiting for a bite. Then he could tie flies at night and cast until his arm fell of during the day (between Shep time, of course).

I have to stop making up hobbies for him.  I've got a Horizon scene to fix, dangit!  I haven't even managed to land yet.

I wonder if Kaidan is a very meticulous sort. Everything in its right place, everything as clean as you can make it.

oooh, making up Kaidan hobbies!  I can't imagine him fly-fishing, but that might be because I associate fishing with my father-in-law, who is nothing like Kaidan.  Well, he's pretty even tempered, cause otherwise he'd have gone crazy marrying into my husband's family.  (Ha!  Guess I'm even tempered too.  Oh, wait, no, I'm crazy.) um, where was I?  Right, hobbies... I bet Kaidan was the sort of kid who took apart all the household toys and appliances to see how they went together.  And even sometimes managed to get them back together again!

And yes, generally, we seem to think Kaidan is meticulous and precise... and thorough... and have I mentioned that self-control is a big turn-on?

Sorry Pac, I seem to be especially guttery tonight. :P

i would imagine so. for some reason disciplined biotic/marine/tech strikes me as a neat person.

and i think kaidan would probably like a vacay in vancouver. the pacific northwest is gorgeous. who wouldn't like it. <----biased

i just keep seeing potential reunion scenes with paragon and renegade interrupts all over the place. i think i'd go crazy not knowing what to choose.

I can't actually see him fishing, either. It was just a "what would he do on vacation to keep from going stir crazy" thought. I picture him in your neck of the woods, sage, so there should be plenty of places to fish. And hike in the woods, all alone. With Shep. And beds of pine needles.

That it is, Sage.  That it is.  And I'm totally not biased because my dad is from Vancouver, no :innocent:  Or because my half-sister lives in Washington.

Hehe I like Jilly's idea of a flying tackle interrupt  on Horizon :D  Man, writing my own version of Horizon is going to be tough as all get out with so many people having already tried it, but I think I'm going to need to eventually anyway.

The NW is loverly. We lived their briefly. Probably why I'm biased into thinking Kaidan would like it too.

And pine needles are surprising hard and prickly.

eta:  Thanks Joi... everyone seems to like the flying tackle.

And yes, Horizon is such a turning point for any version of the relationship, that it's hard to avoid if you're writing about Shepard.  Pivotal moment, and all.

That is my default assumption of this thread, you know.

As for Kaidan's hobbies, I think the reason he's a sentinel is because he's a gadget kind of guy. He's the sort who probably has the latest iPhone, an iPad, top of the line computer, and a car with the most tech integrated into it as possible. And half of his tech toys are in a dismantled state. He probably had a meccano set growing up, but it was a love/hate relationship as the little metallic pieces kept shocking him.

sensible of you.  Personally, I'm usually slightly less obvious about it though.  ;)

oooh, I hadn't thought about the static when I suggested he was a 'take apart and rebuild all the stuff at home' kid.  For some reason that's just an awesome detail... I so need to do something with that.  If you don't mind that I steal it, that is...

I probably stole it from some fanfic or other!

Yay for fic theft? *snickers* Thanks Pac. Not sure where it's going. I think Shep gets to meet the Alenko's at some point, and hear how cute a little kid Kaidan was. Not gonna happen anywhere in Lost for Words though.

true. the NW can be a tricky place to um...enjoy the ...outdoors.... in that way.

mind suddenly takes a gutter dive re: shep and kaidan on a walk.

i don't really see shep OR kaidan taking a lot of shore leave, though. they seem the sort to be on the job a lot. i just hope things work out for them to be together in the end on the job. minus the monitoring devices, i think the new normandy would be quite cozy.

Why the sudden gutter dive? We live in the gutter, no diving required.  Though, in terms of the dangers of an outdoor walk, I'm totally blaming legbamel.  :P

And yes, Shep and Kaidan do seem to be the work-aholic types.  Shepard can express some 'tired of being the savior of the galaxy' opinions in ME2, however, so I can see needing to retire somewhere not work/shipboard life eventually.  They'd definitely still need something to do however.

And, I'm wallowing in the gutter again.

So... what would Kaidan and Shepard do after the Reapers are defeated and they can, in theory, retire?  Do they?  Do they help the Alliance?  Do they become freelance slaver mopper-uppers?  (a la Jack's pirate theory, just with a bit more of a mandate involved)  Do they actually settle down on a planet somewhere?

I can't really picture Kaidan leaving the Alliance. Maybe he'd leave the military arm of it at some point, but he'd still want to serve. I think he'll eventually want to retire, but I'm not sure if we're talking like some standard retirement age or ten minutes before death, but you know, to at least be able to say "I'm retired."

Shepards are going to vary. I tend to view my Shepard as burning bright and dying young. But I don't think anyone wants to think much about that.

Hey as for after the Reapers ... they could totally make Shepard the next human Councilor. Then the next time the galaxy is in danger Shepard could be the one to do the air quotes!

Good Evening Everyone the Night Crew is back online.

I don't know about Kaidan, but Shepard should have some trust issues when they get back together.  He didn't listen to her and did call her a traitor.  But I think Jilly has a point.  Even after a fight the physical is always easier to fix then the verbal.

OMG you guys have got to get out of my head.  Chapter 23 is all about fishing.  Not fly fishing but boy... I can't believe it - Just finished it this morning and I haven't even posted it.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and I can tell you something about it... it's diverse.  There are the pine needles of the west side and here in central Washingon we have wine country and sagebrush.  Wine country... now that could be interesting....

Well another busy night ... we are having hot dogs for dinner because we will probably be too busy to eat.  I hope no one gets shot again tonight.

Have a Great One everyone ....I will be lurking ....

Ahem, erm anyone suggested Kaidan as a knight of old, or dressed up as an Arab Prince riding a large white steed to carry you away on......

*sigh*

Morning Jen I was begining to think I was all alone.

Well there are those nice shirts they wear at renessance fairs with leather pants *sighs* yeah, I'd like that on Kaidan!
