Herro everyone.

Re Kaidan and coffee: I bet he's the psychotic kind that wakes up in the morning and doesn't drink caffeine. This would be consistent with his migraines; he'd probably have to watch his caffeine intake to prevent flareups.

Actually while too much caffeine can be a cause, it can also be beneficial and is a primary ingredient in a lot of over the counter headache/migraine medications.  As a migraine sufferer, coffee (and making sure I drink plenty of water to stay hydrated) can make a hugely positive difference.

There is that strange balance with caffeine and migraines, to be sure.

If I have too much, my head hurts. But drinking a coke can seriously help my head feel better.  But then things like excedrin migraine can make it worse and even give me rebound migraines.

But then again, I've also wondered if Kaidan  has been diagnosed with 'migraine' or if his side-effects are migraine-like. I mean, what if the pain he has is around the implant site? Perhaps the closest thing to describe it as is a migraine; it could be different for him.

From what it sounds like, he lives with them constantly. Because he constantly gets them, one wonders if they've found a medicine that works for him. Would Imitrex or the like help him?

I wonder if he's got the kind of migraines that medicine doesn't help. Perhaps he has to take painkillers for the exceptionally bad ones and has to just deal with the rest.

Anyway, random thoughts for the migraine crew.^_^

Just to add a few more random thoughts....

Hormones, high cholesterol and high blood pressure can influence migraines also.  And certainly if in thinking about his implant, it could be as much about wiring -- Kaidan's natural wiring interfacing with the implant -- and electrical surges of some sort (I'm thinking about some of the throbbing that happens with headaches acutally).

Imitrex. Ah the good old days....*shudders* nothing like having to give oneself a shot between the eyes.

Thinking about this in realtion to coffee, imitrex only works after a migraine starts - narrows the blood vessels around the brain. Which is also the function of caffeine. So if he were able to use imitrex, it seems likely to me that he'd probably be able to manage a cup or two of coffee.  Posted Image

i have the same problem with migraine meds. none work for me. they only make it worse. i'm getting something now that's usually for people that are epileptic. i think that when dr. chakwas said migraine, she meant migraine. just like our migraines can be triggered by lack of caffeine or certain medication or in my case sun reflection, bright light, lack of sleep, stress and red wine for example, kaidan's is triggered by his implants. i think that it gets bad for him, if he either uses his biotic skills either too much or too little. ive realized that he often rubs his forehead in elevator scenes on citadel and stuff. and maybe he gets the same stuff we have to deal with as well, the vision disorders, nausea and all. i think in his case it can be treated but seeing that he is a soldier, i do believe that he prefers a clear - as in drug free - head over a painfree one. lots of the painkillers have bad side effects. being tired, slow reactions and stuff only the harmless ones. i think he doesn't really want that. and it's easier to deal with pain, since there's other ways to face that. just like Liara offered him in one Elevator scene to show him some meditation practices against his migraine.

Sorry for ot. but seriously so many of us has migraines? Because me, I have no life at the winter. After a hour of spending time in low temps or on cold wind, my head kills me so badly that I want to be left alone in a dark, silent place.

My prescription migraine medicine gets rid of the migraine, but I end up with severe nausea that requires prescription medicine to counteract it. So, I have medicine for the side effects of my medicine. I effectively am out of commission if I have to take my meds - as if I don't pass out, I'm the equivalent of a zombie.

To date, the only positive trigger that I've found for my migraines is sudden changes in barometric pressure. Living in hurricane alley sucks too because we're prone to sudden drops/changes in pressure.

Well, the one thing we're sure of is that Kaidan gets his migraines because of his implants. I'm also guessing that being a biotic has some influence on reactions to medicine too. Migraine is to be thought a imbalance/disorder of chemicals in your brain (to put it simple), which, I imagine, can also be caused by an implant. The implant is wired to your nervous system, so it can cause havoc on it too.

/has a hard time putting this to english...

I don't get migraines, so I can't really compare from personal experience, but I was wondering a couple of times if whoever was writing dialogue was confusing "migraine" as a synonym to "headache."

But I trust Dr. Chakwas to know what she's talking about, so... *shrug?*

@ Ryu- I think quite a large chunk of us get migraines.

The thing that's irritating about migraines is that they have so many contributing factors and it's a crapshoot for what kind of medicine works.

For example, the week of my period I end up having a continuous headache that will turn into a migraine if I don't take imitrex (pill form). The doctor had me take maxalt samples to try first, and those gave me the worst depression I've felt in my life.

It'd be cool to find out more about L2 migraines and how those might be caused etc.

*creepy voice*

I want to know everything

before my current medication i got the full program lol. vision disorders, nausea, dizzyness, my face went numb, i had problems to speak and all. worst part was when i got rushed to the ER last year january because they thought i had a stroke - i'm 31 now - because my whole body went numb and i couldn't speak. whenever i tried to speak, all that came out of my mouth was nonsense. thats when i got the new medication. and its the first that kinda helps. i've had less migraine attacks since that and the intensity of them has gone to zero too. theres like one or two bad ones every two or three months. before that i had one like every other week. and now i can take a regular, over the counter, painkiller. still the extra-strong ones but thats still ten times better than all the stuff i took before that. so yeah, migraine is a very common disease.

I don't think the writer confused the general term headache with migraines, definitely not when you see the other possible side effects of L2 implants (which all have something to do with the nervous system too). I don't think the writer has actual experience with migraines though.

I would disagree on that. See the Elevator scene with Liara, offering Kaidan to show him meditation stuff.
In my pain therapy I was taught certain meditation practices too, such as autogenic training and a special muscle relexatation.

I don't want to know how bad those side effects are if a doctor refers to his condition as being fortunate because it's "just migraines".

As far as the squadmates' comments are concerned, it could either be an accurate portrayl of how non-migraine sufferers don't understand them and think they're headaches OR it could be the write not quite understanding migraines.

As a sidenote, some of those comments that the squadmates made, particularly those of Wrex and Garrus pissed me off. "A little sting?" Really?

The way Kaidan handled that was very classy IMO because I probably would have launched into a tirade about how a migraine feels.

He or she (I don't know who the writer is) could also have done his or her homework (with research, I mean). Also, migraines tend to have a very big diversity, and I really don't wish to claim to be an expert. But I would think the devs should have given him some room (the one Liara uses for example) so he can have quiet and dark when he needs it.

/hasn't actually see that dialogue with Liara, should try to get that :)

Sexiest eyes poll. Somehow Tali's veiled orbs of light are the most attractive... Kaidan's on there! XD

LOL at Martha Smith being on that poll.  I'd say Kaidan for male characters (of course!) and Jack for female.  Miranda has pretty eyes too, but Jack's are all huge and soulful and belong in a Margaret Keane painting.

Yeah... and they did a superb job of making them pretty when she is crying right before the Omega 4 relay.

but isn't that exactly the way our enviroment deals with it? all my life i had to deal with people who just didn't understand how much migraine is different from a normal headache! i mean, it's not just a headache! you really feel sick. and those comments make you furious, yet after having to deal with them all your life, you just brush them off because you are tired of explaining yourself and tired of explaining to others what it feels like. because even if you DID explain, they wouldn't understand. thinking about it, all the conversations so far, describe my personal experience with my migraines perfectly! so accurate portrayl or real understanding, they did a good job on that, hands down!

i think i got that one when i arrived on citadel for the second time. that's when i took liara and kaidan with me. it was in one of the elevators, if not the very first one that takes you from the normandy to the citadel academy. I dont really know for sure anymore. I just noticed that dialogue because i found it so sweet.

I would classify insanity (something the doc mentioned) as worse though. Lucky is a very relative comment in this talk. If his meds actually work, I guess it isn't too bad for him. Can't imagine Kaidan being in the alliance still otherwise.

This doesn't mean I don't take migraines seriously though. I really do.

I've just started getting them in the past 2 years, so I guess I'm still in that stage where people's ignorance pisses me off. Maybe in time I'll learn to accept it.

When someone asks me what it's like, I tell them this:
Think of the worst hangover you've had. Now multiply that by a few times. You want to cry because it hurts but you're afraid that it'll make it worse. And after that, you lay in bed, gripping your forehead, rolling in pain and actually wishing for death.

Also, when I get frequent headaches along with occasional migraines. They make me very snippy at times.

Do you guys think Kaidan gets cluster headaches that go into an occasional migraine? I'm under the impression that his head hurts somewhat almost every day.

@fort: why would you think that? He could have gone for a new implant. Somewhere there is stated that he refused that. If he would be in pain constantly, would he make that decision?

/mostly curious

Edit: also thanks J4n3, makes it easier to find it :)

Meditation can be useful for all sorts of pain, though.

My reasoning is that it all boils down to the pain, which Kaidan apparently just shoulders, even in situations that (as I understand it) would potentially send him spiraling if they were really that bad (uh... combat?).  Replace "migraine" with "chronic tension headaches due to a nicked cerebellum and faulty hindbrain-pain management," and you could get all the stoic head pain with none of the laid-flat debilitation.

Again, I don't get migraines.  I simply thought while playing that there was more to them then the game suggests.  And he could be meditated, 'tis truth.  I defer to those of you who know what you're talking about.  :?

... Considering where I think the implant is jammed, Kaidan could also have weird pleasure side effects too.  Although we probably would have heard of those.

As I understand it, the implant refits are dangerous and potentially deadly.  I think it's a matter of, "Well, the migraines suck, but they aren't going to make it worse/kill me."

The retrofit implant operation is very risky and has a very small success rate.

Also, if he gets cluster headaches, it's manageable. I get those and maybe 2-3 migraines a month, depending on my stress level. Some over the counter medication can take care of the headache and might prevent it from becoming a migraine.

I'd go so far as to say that having a headache every day isn't so bad because it can be treated. The migraine aspect is the tough part. So, his head could hurt to some degree every day, but the experience of having had migraines puts a headache into a new perspective. People that get migraines can generally shrug off a normal headache.
