Kaidan's middle name? Should it be Japanese like his first?

... er.  Is it supposed to be Japanese?  Really?  'Cause I honestly thought so at first, going on subtitles, but dropped the idea the first time I heard it spoken... *confused, but curious, but probably overthinking again*

Edit to add a Kaidan on the new page:

I believe it means "ghost story" in Japanese if the forums are to be believed. Then again, Alenko doesn't sound Japanese at all.

Kaidan may be Japanese but it doesn't sound too offlandish. He might have some Japanese in him since humans seem to be very diverse.
I think Alenko may actually be Australian but who knows.

I don't hate poor Jacob, but his romance is so easy and fun to make fun of. :o

Good evening everyone....I hope you all had a great day or nite :D

@ Winde I really loved your Kaidan picture it was gorgeous...but, you always make great pics.

I thought that Kaidan was of mixed nationality...because, it seems that everyone in the ME universe is mixed. I think that is what I really like about the ME Universe...there is no black or white....just shades of gray...don't you love shades of gray Posted Image

Kaidan is japanese. And you're right. They're generally ghost stories full or rage and revenge... Japanese would be pronounced kai-don ( w/ a long i sound - At least according to my world cinema professor.) But I've looked in many name books and they all say Kaidan (Kaden, Kaiden and other spellings) are Arabic meaning "companion."

EDIT: I did a quick search online and I see a couple places stating an English origin meaning "fighter/rebel/spirit of battle"

With all I know about the language most i's are pronounced like e's but I'm no expert >_>

The meanings of his name make sense. He's a companion, a fighter and a marine(spirit of battle?). Ghost story could make sense with his Biotic Traning or something else from that we don't know about maybe.

It's the pronunciation that threw me.  (If you look at this vid, at about 3:20, you can hear the word kaidan pronounced).  It wouln't necessarily mean... er... "ghost story," to go with that translation, because names in Japanese often use different compound words.

"Kaidan Alenko," without hearing it pronounced, looked like an attempt at a Japanese name to me.  Yet they get all the other Japanese names and pronunciations correct, far as I recall, so... *shrug?*

If it were Japanese... Given Kaidan's love of old romantic sci-fi, I'd have gone with "Weird
Tales" for the pun on the old pulp magazine.  ^_^

(Again, this is mostly my own meandering curiosity.  Regardless, I'm still gonna have Kasumi give him a hard time in fic.)

The ME1 human NPCs seemed very much in keeping with the universe being ethnically diverse. I believe Ash to be somewhere between Hispanic and Black. Kaidan I want to say has Asian features. Capt Anderson defiantly had some mixed features. ME2 not so much. It seemed a majority of the characters were only one race. Wonder why they did that? Or if it was inadvertent?

Ghost story could refer to the story of Vyrnus.  He's defiantly a ghost now.  Defiantly some revenge, even if not intentional.

Kaidan works.  He is my companion with some ghosts in the closet whom I like to take with me into battle.

@Nightodie - I'm going back and forth between writing and playing through ME1 as Brian Shepard :D. BUT! I did find this hilarious line when male!Shep speaks to Kaidan about Liara.

If you get the part where Shepard asks Kaidan if he has any intentions toward Liara and you chose for Shepard *Oh I Do* for himself. The two lines go as follows.

Shepard: Remember Lieutenant I saw her first.

Kaidan: Only by a few seconds, sir.

This gave me ideas for my fanfic @.@ Some that you will enjoy Nighttodie. I just found it hilarious.

this. really, truly, this. even sheploo looked a little mixed backgroundish - to me anyhow. possibly?  but yes, me2 and suddenly there is white girl, black guy, and white girl in tats. i liked the very mixed nationalities of me1.

@ sapphy: i look forward to seeing it. i like that you write spacer/war hero. so often the FF is the angsty backgrounds, and i like that you have the "normal" ones and still make shep awesome. my first toon was spacer. for some reason, my spacers always ended up with garrus. very...weird. i guess i needed shep to have siblings to romance kaidan. that makes no sense at all in typing it out, but in my head, it did.

@ winde: awesome. you rock. i love your stuff.

@ y'all:

I used to drive myself crazy trying to figure out where Ash and Kaidan, and even Chakwas were from.
Ash looked black and/or hispanic to me.
Kaidan was... I had no idea. Something made me think he had portuguese in him.

... you know, you're right.  I mean, there was some variety in English-language accents, but not a lot of ethnic diversity.  I kinda noticed it wasn't as strong, but just now thinking about it...?  Holy crap.

The diversity was one of the things I loved about ME.  And... now I find myself missing Samesh Bhatia. :(

Now that would be disturbing... considering half my playthroughs are femsheps.  That would be like seeing myself in skimpy female clothing.  Of course it would be disturbing seeing myself as a female .

All the more reason more reason to bring back the ME1 LIs. So that we can debate what races lead to Kaidan's fine rear...I mean facial structure. I totally meant facial structure.

But you do get to see a naked woman Shepard in ME1!
Or maybe not.
