So we call her "R" here? Is the full name taboo? lol
Anyways, there does seem to be a pattern for Bioware in male love interests having a previous attraction or relationship - but in this case it was, as pointed out, nothing serious and never really got far (if it really got anywhere).
Kaidan - Rahna and Citadel Doc. (Dunno why people get so worked up about it. Rahna was before he knew Shep and Doc was when he thought she was dead for over 2 years, tried to get a life again.
)
Thane - Dead wife and estranged, troubled son.
Garrus - "We, ah... held a tie breaker in her quarters..."
Carth - Dead wife and estranged son with problems.
Jacob - "She... deserves a better man than I."@Miranda
"Shepard... the priiiize..."@Shep
Just to expand upon this a bit:
(from the "girls against carth syndrome group"):
Neverwinter Nights: Aarin Gend killed his girlfriend and angsted over it.
Jade Empire: Sky had a dead wife and daughter he angsted over.
Neverwinter Nights: HotU: Valen had an ex that was killed tragically just to torture him.
Dragon Age: Zevran has a tragically killed ex he is angsty over.
Compared to these (and this may have been your point), Rana is basically inconsequential and absolutely insignificant. I don't think there was ever a relationship between the two. So yea.
and let's not forget casavir who, though they took it out, in hidden dialog files was in love with Ophala, the local madam, but had her reject him after he killed a man in a duel over her.
while i do love BW for giving consistently awesome LIs for the female PC, i could really go for a few less "i had a tragic history with women, now fix me." moments. the female LIs, almost without exception, find the male PC to be their first true love. i think this is part of why alistair held such appeal: he was such a nice change from all that.
it's almost like the writers don't quite know what to do with a still single male LI. he's still single at his age, and he's not a creep, so.... must have a tragic past with a woman. only explanation.

this is why i like the character of kaidan so much. just a nice guy who happened to be single and not have found someone special yet. it's simple, sweet, and you can read as much or as little into rahna as you want.
me, i think rahna wasn't serious at all, but it's one of those formative teen-years things. sometimes if you loose someone at that age, it can make a big impact on your thinking, even if in retrospect, you realize they really weren't that close to you, etc. this is my entire take on baat and why he brings it up even though it was years ago. he IS actually over it, but it was his coming of age time, so he refers to it when thinking about how things are.

I like that one
After reading some of Kasumi's dialogue, I know think that every crewmate/squadmate has a crush on Shepard.
don't you? i mean, heck, *I* have a crush on shep - fem or male. he/she is just awesome!
