I did a fluff update yesterday if you need a dose of it after dealing with Horizon again.
I might. I need to write on aPoV and The Rescue. Neither of which are angsty right now.

Sorry, Ods. You can still enjoy it in all it's pain, though! And Meg still has to process the whole thing.

I've been making the rounds of the character threads again with another thought exercise, this one coming off the Jack versus Kaidan discussion from the Jack thread. It's not so much about pitting squadmate versus squadmate, but considering which squadmates would work the best together. Say you had to organize a three-man squad and Shepard was not going to be in it. It's not about what powers you see during the game, as that's just game mechanics. More about what you think a squadmate's strengths are by considering their personality, their history, their strategies, their abilities, and so forth. Compare and contrast with the other squadmates and find that combination that makes each squadmate in the squad work at their best.
Like many squadmates, I know Kaidan's personality makes him easy to work with a wide number of squadmates that we have seen. But some squadmates I think suit him better. For instance, he has that comraderie with Ashley that allows for an almost unspoken coordination that you get from a team that's been working a long time together and have gotten to know each other's quirks. I also think Kaidan would work very well with Samara, they'd approach the battlefield with a well-analyzed approach and a methodical strategy. Also, I think they'd concentrate on coordinating their biotic attacks.
So barring the fact that Ashley is dead by the time you even meet Samara, I think a Kaidan+Ashley+Samara squad would be rather powerful. But then if I do have to take Virmire into account, then I suppose I'd replace Ashley with... Liara perhaps? I never thought teams had to be completely balanced between biotics, tech, and combat like ME1 seemed to stress. I think an all biotic squad could be quite lethal on its own, and Kaidan does have his own tech skills to fall back on should they need it.

But why do Garrus and Tali compliment Kaidan so well? What is it about their own combat abilities that work best with Kaidan? Or is it simply all about having gained experience in fighting with each other for so long? Outside of the game mechanics, what do they offer each other?

I agree that Samara and Kaidan would work well together; they both strike me as the sort to be very methodical on the battlefield and they each can give as well as take orders. For a third member, I think Thane would work as well because he also shares that methodical approach and would be equally capable of joining them in close combat or providing long-range sniper support as the situation required. Jack or Grunt, I think, would be liable to go charging in and ruin their carefully orchestrated battle plan.

That trumps everything and everyone. Period.
Seriously though, Kaidan and Garrus seemed to work well for me in ME1. Ash was a good compliment too.
Kaidan + Samara would be doom. We'd all go Blue Suns bowling. Except I have no biotics... So alone, so isolated... Like there's a hole where the heart may possibly be.

Hi to all the Kaidan fans
I found the forums because of the awesome fan art that the members have made. I LOVE all of the shirtless Kaidan art. mmm. Thanks ladies
And especially kudos to whoever made that shirtless trio of Kaidan, Alistair, and Carth. Yum.
You are a very talented group
I just got into Mass Effect a couple of months ago and am working on ME2 second time through. I love the concept that they have for this series--that the 3 games are all part of one big story. It tears me up how things are between fem Shepard and Kaidan in this game. I'm glad he sent that e-mail or else I would have been depressed through the remainder of the game. This way there is hope and it kept my Kimbri Shepard from falling for Thane and "cheating" on Kaidan (although the way they left it, they are kinda "on a break" Ross from Friends would argue). I don't think Kaidan's reunion with the less faithful Shepards is going to go too great.
Hmmm...Kaidan vs. Jack. I think that though they would not like each other from a personal standpoint, they would work together without too much difficulty. Kaidan is a professional. He would do what is best for the team. He always does. Jack would probably rather tear up a group of enemies rather than some Alliance guy. The problem would come if Jack wanted to harm an innocent or civilian for expediency. Kaidan wouldn't stand for that.
In a straight up fight? Hm...I think it would depend on the situation. Kaidan is very logical and uses his head. Jack uses her gut reaction. It might be a toss up. But I fear that Kaidan might not come out on top.
EDIT: And which of you did that "Thinking of Horizon" video on YouTube? It was brilliant! I'd love to be able to put that on my iPod.
