I just want to say, thanks to those who got what I was trying to say in the DA2 forum about representing a female player character in marketing. It's not *just* about being given information about female PCs, either, even love interests for female characters have gotten the shaft in the past when it comes to Bioware games.
Kaidan, for example, was a complete mystery before ME1 came out. Ashley got a profile on the site with her blood type, birthday, and middle name, but people who were interested in the female love interest character were ignored. Search for threads on the old Bioware boards about Kaidan from before ME1 came out, and you'll see lots of speculation and frustration. For a company that I believe really *does* care about it's female fans (and those who play female characters), it's frustrating to see this again and again whenever new games are announced.
With ME2, at least we knew that whatever we saw of Ashley in trailers would most likely be the same for Kaidan, but it would just be so nice and refreshing if we didn't have to beg for scraps when it comes to marketing ME3. I'm really hoping that fans of ALL female love interests let Bioware know that we are consumers who matter too, when the time comes, and we should be considered when planning their marketing campaign.
/gets off soapbox
(for now)
Kaidan thanks you for your time.

While I mostly understand the need to 'brand' a game with a figure/trademark, I don't understand why that means there can't be variety on the game's own webpage, after you get past the iconic image on the main page. ie, female PC trailers in the gallery, the same amount of background info for all the companions, not just the leading female NPC, etc.
I desperately want an info page for Kaidan like Ashley's was for ME1. It was awesome, and yet... she's the only one who got one. What happened to the other five team-mates? Or Anderson, even? They're important too.

And goodmorning Night, Sia, Teen, jilly and Shenzi, I think I totally forgot that >.<
Edit: and I'm sure I forgot to mention some too, so morning everyone!
@Teen: you're right! sorry about that thread getting derailed. I think Brass_Buckle has/had a similar thread which is still ongoing about the same issue though! Maybe we should throw some support in (in a dignified way, obviously).

But your thread did make a good, valid point. It's not a big deal to myself, but seeing some female avatars and info on the LIs would be nice. And actually have them before the game comes out instead of the day before. Or the day it does.

Wow internet at work doesn't like Kaidan bombs it seems.
@TZ, I have to say thank you for your post on Marketing. Your posts were well worded and held valid points I really agree with. A shame the post got locked because of the bickering, especially since a lot of the bickering had nothing to do with your post at all.
Seems a lot of people didn't get what you were trying to say.
If I hadn't been such a rabid Bioware fangirl since the first Baldur's Gate, I would never have known Mass Effect had a female character. I hated how little marketing Kaidan got and when people did meet him ingame, he was laughed at and forums flooded with the "Gawd, whiny Carth" posts.
I would have loved to have seen information about Kaidan like Ashley got with her detailed ME1 'file' on the original ME website. I actually waited for his and was really looking forward to seeing a little animated figure of him as well. One we could have clicked on to hear him say a few lines, like Ash's.
Same for ME2, there was no femshep at all cept for the 4 screenshots they tossed into their gallery without a word at release or very, very shortly prior to release. Heck I was thrilled there was a section including Kaidan this time shortly before release. I just really hope they include female characters and maybe their LIs in future promotions. DA2 or ME3. I would love to see a glimpse of Kaidan in gamefootage for ME3, alongside femshep...I mean....I would squeeeee with delight.
Here's to hoping we get some femshep and Kaidan love for ME3, doesn't have to be on a Sheploo advertisement scale...but some screentime in gameplay trailers, screenshots or character information on the site would be great. Would suck if we get nothing again. (not counting the information they tossed on the site almost on release day, after we waited two years)
The moment they put Kaidan's information on the ME2 site, I was one happy fangirl. Little loving he got, but even that was more than Femshep got...which is sad, for Jen Hale especially.
Hi Jho!
Couldn't agree with you more (and TZ you know I agree!).
I just kills me that BW can't bend just a little for a rather significant group of fans. According to the Entertainment Software Association's annual report, women now make up 40% of the gaming community in America (that's just the US but I'm betting that it can't be wildly different in Europe and other places) and the percentage of women playing video games grows each year. I dunno but it seems to me if I were a business that would represent a potential area of market expansion that I'd want to tap into. I don't care if we have Hawke or Sheploo, I just want FemHawke and FemShep to be represented at least in the screenies and info!

@Batteries: Well, for 'us' that know BioWare games, we know you can play females. I just think it is bad marketing to skip half of your potential buyers by not showing options they should be proud of instead of hiding.
I agree.
At least seeing a female avatar or knowing there will be one at all would be nice. Unfortunately, crappy manly man marketing is going to be crappy manly man marketing for a long while. Hopefully that will change soon.
I must admit though, that guy has an awesome beard.

I would blame EA, but in a way that is kinda silly. They have The Sims under the belt and if that doesn't have a 'huge female player base', I don't know what has one..Batteries wrote...

The one I linked here is actually an improvement over the one someone made that's a direct copy of the official trailer just with femshep.

I think DA2 sounds quite good, actually, and I like the idea of a decade long timespan in a game with an actual narrative arc, but I'm not nearly as excited as I was when I found the first DAO announcement. (Despite thinking it was going to be a PC game I wouldn't be able to play, I was still completely fascinated.) *shrugs* Will wait and see.
and, in the interests of pretending I'm on topic, have a Winde sketch...
