I've been picturing Kaidan as some kind of special liaison to Anderson. It wouldn't be unusual for someone in Anderson's shoes to have a military liaison and that would also help partially account for the two step jump in rank.  Just a theory that I've been rolling around in my head anyway.

The problem is all these role are fine for Kaidan but outta place for Ash and unless Bioware really do pull a diamond from their ass and move away from this interchangable thing (which I can't reall see tbh ) it needs to be a role that would suit them both.

Yeah, you make a good point.  I've not really been thinking about Ash (obviously) and I guess I'm really hoping that Bioware gets off its Kaidan/Ash are interchangeable schtick because the are obviously very different characters and I don't think many of us can think of a role (other than as a teammate on a mission or in a more private setting....) that really works for both characters.

Unfortunately BioWare has been very lazy when it comes to interchangability in ME2 - just look at the dance animations!

Hey, most actors have to take whatever roles they can get, even if it's villain of the week on Voyager.  I didn't even like Carth Onasi very much before I played Mass Effect, but I managed to separate the characters, even if they sounded a lot alike.  Kaidan is just that good.

I think that Carth is in a way the most fun of the BW romances. You can make SO much fun of him and he takes it like a man and just laughs. I love teasing Alistair but I feel guilty sometimes.

But my Revan was really nice.  He should have just known that she was cool.  Then I totally would have sexed him up (or as close as you can get in KOTOR).

I don't understand that armor, what's up with the lights?

On a serious note, I'm pretty sure the lights are to "guide" the colonists during emergencies, since they're on the galactic rim, pirates/slaver attacks must be common so during raids etc colonists need to quickly identify security personnel and a good way for that is to put some christmas lights on armor.
