I think Virmire is set up to be evenly matched.  No matter how you rationalize it, it's all in your head.  There is no "right choice."

The only time it doesn't seem to work is when you don't like Kaidan or you don't like Ashley.

Honestly I dreaded Virmire everytime since I hated doing that to my squad.

By that point in the game, you know about Reapers and have met Sovereign. You know Saren and the Geth are in league with them. There is no way to predict, imo, that the Geth would not be able to disable that bomb and keep it from going off.

My Shepard is very by the book. The mission objective is the most important thing, everything else is secondary - but you do your damnedest to ensure that those are met as well. The decision was a no-win scenario, and the primary objective HAD to be met.

I cant go back to the nuke since an entire team of spec ops and another member is still fighting, If I can get to them and rescue multiple lives that is good. But if Kaidan dies at the site before you reach it, that leaves no time to get back to rescue the other team. Even if the geth stop the bomb you still evac many lives and can escape to bring in a fleet. Besides Kaidan was pretty well built at that point I knew sadly that he could hold the geth for long enough, still made me sick though.

Sad but I am a glad the ME2 lacked a huge choice like that.
Samara and MOrinth dont count. Right because I want a 400 year old serial killer who kills with sex on my ship.

And Kelly would be the first to succomb. 

  While Kaidan seemed to feel even worse than Shep does, almost like he blames himself for Ash dying.

*Shrugs*  That's Kaidan.  He's overly-concscientious like that.
But he also hasn't really lost anyone in a situation like that before.  Shepard has--whether when the slavers came of on Akuze.  Its nice that she can give him a little comfort and advice there.

I always have Kaidan with the bomb.  Yes, I would like to give Ash the dramatic scene.  But it makes more sense for Kaidan to do it, I HATE him being on the other team and not knowing what all is going on--makes me anxious, and I love hoisting him up over my Shep's shoulder and bodily carrying him out of danger.

And on that note, Night is Falling...

The first time I got to Virmire I was like "You mean I have to choose one?" I couldn't believe they were making me choose and only between my two favorite characters... yeah ... I couldn't do it for a while... picked Kaidan of course... then got my first view of a love triangle I didn't even know I had gotten myself into. Yeah first playthrough was full of surprises.

@Chem I'm working in the billing office for a group of medical clinics in Orange County. I know I sounded less than enthusiastic about it but honestly it's not that bad. When I first found out I was just a little freaked because I don't take well to sudden changes in plans. But now that I've settled in, it's fine. I just wish I had been able to enjoy the sun today... we've had little but June gloom since I've been home.

Sia Later: Yup. I wasn't going to get into reading the FF because when I got into it in the SW universe I got confused what happened in the books and what happened in FF.

I was really hungry for more Kaidan/Shep. And there are only 2 games (gosh, I almost said movies hehe) so its not as likely to get confused.

I know.  Really!  And hubby's playing on the XBOX right now so I can't even play those!  And they really are like awesome super detailed pick your own adventure movies.
