ME's a military sci-fi story... can't get too military, imho. (And I second the recommendation you made last night for Weber's Honor Harrington series. Great space navy stuff. Bujold's great too for sci-fi, but much less military, since Miles Vorkosigan is a bit, um... maverick? Crazy? A total genius lunatic on speed? *snickers*)

Miles Vorkosigan ROCKS.

But yes, Weber makes a great transition(?) from "wet navy" to "space navy" parlance.  And I think ME was aiming for it, but fell a bit short since I doubt there's a lot of service history on their staff. ;)

Honor Harrington's, well... Shepard.  (And both are Horatio Hornblower, but that's beside the point.)

QFT  (Even if I've never actually gotten around to reading the Hornblower books.  I should rectify that.)

And I think they purposely made ME soft military sci-fi, to make it more accessible, not because they weren't able/willing to do the research, or that no one on staff had some experience with the military/naval lifestyle.

@Sia: I am in pain just at imagining the whole sent to hell/dual-Horizon flashback. Ow. (Awesome, but OW.)

@Jade: Generally the outfit where you where the formal looking jacket is called class A's, yes. (There's lots of different terms for different levels of uniforms, but that one should generally be accurate.) Mess Dress is when it's really formal, and you wear the gloves and the bow-tie with it, and there's an optional different cut jacket, so the uniform is worn like a tuxedo instead of a suit.

At work the other day I saw a few people shopping in their class B's, which is rather unusual. (class B's are the dress slacks/skirt and the shirt, but not the jacket. It's what used to be standard wear for working in an office, but they let people wear their utilities/ACU's nowadays, so most people do.)

this is very helpful for those of us not as familiar with the lingo. been looking a lot up myself.

so you call the so-called casual uniforms utilities? or BDUs? i've seen them referred to as both in fanfic, but wasn't quite sure what they actually should be called (talking about the blue shirt and pants worn on the normandy sr1)

I think my navy sister called them utilities, and my army husband called them BDU's.  I'll have to check with my sister, though.

Given that Shepard and Kaidan are Marines, though, I'm pretty sure BDUs is the term they'd use.

@Sage: In the army, the casual/fatigues used to be called BDU's (battle-dress-uniforms) with a few varieties based on the climate they would be used in: winter-weight vs desert BDU's, etc. Unlike the working uniform on the Normandy, these are actually worn in combat, however, with kevlar/body-armor worn over them. I highly doubt they blue things would fit under the armor in ME-verse. ^_~

A few years back, the army switched to ACU's, (army combat uniform) which is one single weight and pattern that's intended to be used anywhere. (And is thus really hot in the summer, and not quite warm enough anywhere that has a proper winter. *snorts*)

As far as what to call the things they wear on ship... *shrugs* They're probably closest to the ACU's nowadays, but they're not an exact match, so you've got some creative leeway. BDU's/ACU's have had a lot of different nicknames over the years, and will assuredly get more as they're frequently adjusted, but utilities would be fine, as that's what they are... the clothes you wear when you're actually 'working'. (That might be the NCO-wife in my though, as any Sergeant will tell you they work for a living, unlike those officers over there... *laughs*)

Did that help? Or was it just a more confusing ramble?

I had wondered about the difference between an ACU and a BDU. From all that info, I guess I'll just go with the term BDU.

BDU's don't actually exist anymore. It's an obsolete term for the old uniforms. See, I knew I was making less sense than I thought.

eta:  They could of course bring them back in the future, of course, so there's no reason not to use the term.  Just trying to clarify my previous wall of text.  Sorry.

How is it going?... I´m just getting ready to play some ME:-) Kaidan, Wrex and my femshep are still on Zhu´s Hope and are getting ready to fight the Thorian. I play Vanguard and I have to admit, after I despised the Shotgun at first, I start really to enjoy it now ...lol...

Oh crap. Joker doesn't have his hat on when he drops the Mako on Illos. Why did I never notice this before?

In watching BTVS for the 100th time... I'm struck AGAIN by how much they made Joker look like Seth Green, but with a broader jawline.

When I started writing my fics and ran into this problem I was aware that BDUs was an obsolete term, but since there was no standard term and Marines would not be wearing ACUs, I decided to stick with BDUs. The acronym was more reader friendly than class whatever or Mess Uniform. Battle Dress Uniform is generic (as in not specific to any country/military branch) and general enough that a casual reader with no military experience could understand.

I actually haven't read Hornblower either, but he's heavily influenced modern Space Operas.  The Honorverse and Mass Effect aren't the only places in which he's referenced.

They made most characters resemble their VAs in some ways. Heck, even Garrus looks like Keener sometimes to me.

@Jaer: That is totally the point I was trying to make in my edit, and failing. That you for actual coherence. *grins*

@Aslan: Shotgun against creepers is a wonderful, wonderful thing. My very first ME run was a Vanguard. Nothing else compares to biotics/shotgun/adrenaline burst for sheer fun destructive power.

@Sia: Yes, I run across Hornblower comments a lot. Someday I'll hunt them down. My mother mentions whenever we come across a reference that they're good, as she read them all, oh, forty years ago or something. I'm queen of procrastination though, so I haven't managed it yet. ;)

You're right, he does.

I'm glad Kaidan doesn't look too much like Sbarge, though.  If he did, I'd keep seeing all the villains that actor plays.  It's hard enough separating Miranda from Sarah Walker.

Jilly, you´re so right about it! I let them come close and then... Boom... I didn´t even need my biotics power most of the time... lol...

no, that's really useful. utilities makes sense. and yeah, i'm sure they'd have some slang for it.

i was never much one for shooter games before ME because they were just about guns and targets. but i love the space military saga. very interesting, and while i'm sure it takes liberties with military life (not military, but guessing from friends/family who are) the references are good ones. it's like going into the unknown of the future, the military stays...well, true enough to its roots that it's a good place to start from in introducing the player to the game.

and uniforms are hot. they just are.

okay, kid's napping. let's get some writing done....
