I can't imagine saying everything Avery wants to say in a letter. It's better all said in person.

Of course... they've yet to actually TALK....

Would you mind explaining a little?

Funny how (since its role play) we all superimpose part of our own personalities onto Shepard.  I HATE conflict (emotional) and bad feelings.  Make me ill.  Its just my personality to have to get things cleared up ASAP.  Somehow I end up being moderator and ship counsellor all the time in real life.

Like I said above, Kimbri would have written a dozen (at least) responses (in various tones) back to him--none of which she could ever send.  Part of her mind would constantly be hashing this thing out.

Kimbri feels isolated.  Not completely sure if anyone is really there for her.  It doesn't really put her in the most optomistic frame of mind in taking on the Collectors.  Its almost a spontaneous decision to write the message back.  She just couldn't leave things the way they were.  Like she said, she wanted him to know--not to have any doubts or regrets.  And move on without regrets if the worst happened.

I look at it like this:  It's a suicide mission ("Certain death for some, but fine for us," Kadian Quote -- FTW!),  he's already lost you once.   I don't see how a long drawn-out explanation would help him find closure if you failed to come back.

Yes, you're the indomitable, indefeatable Commander ****ing Shepard, but you're not infallible.  Saren's outmanuvering you on Virmire was proof enough of that.  And the Collectors have proven you can die.

If you died after such a heartfelt, loving, letter... I can only imagine it crushing him further.

That's why Avery's is vague and is only an attempt to remind him of what they once had.  And Meghan doesn't reply at all.  (She's the swift sharp ripping off of band aids school of emotional "healing.")

I agree with Sia's reasoning.

The short one sentence I wrote would have been what Alexis would have said to him. She would have tried to write something, but she would have found it difficult to convey what she really wanted to say. Not when she wasn't sure yet what was going to be the outcome.

Then Anderson reminded her of how painful her last death had been. And she figured it would be better if she didn't say anything at all. Because she's silly like that.

We do all have our own interpretations of characters as you say :). And I agree that this is based upon our own experience.

I see Kaidan as grieving if Shep dies again but I don't see him as being crushed by a loving letter received before she goes.E veryone deals with grief differently.  Many people would find great comfort in a heartfelt loving letter; would hang onto it, would cherish it as the last tangible expression from a loved one.  In working with folks who are struggling with loss  frequently the most difficult part is that the loss is unexpected, unanticipated. Unfinished business whether positive or negative now remains unfinished.

I think one of the most difficult aspects of Shep's initial death would be the shock; the attack on the Normandy was unexpected and traumatic.  The outcome tragic.  I tend to see Kaidan's response as being traumatic grief.  This time however, he knows she's heading into the unknown, death is a distinct possibility and even though he would be grieving, a loving letter might just be a small comfort.   Posted Image

I think we're assuming he knows more about the suicide mission than he actually does.

I think Star has a point, regardless if he knows about the suicide mission before he will find out.  He makes it clear on Horizon (although he probaby doesn't realize it) and in the letter how much her death has affected him.  How could it be benificial to him if you don't say goodbye again? ... I mean really, I wouldn't have written as heartfelt a letter as Jade did, and truth be told my Shepard still has issues with him walking away and saving his ass... and she would leave him a letter that won't be sent unless she doesn't make it back.  If you truly die this time do you want the man you love to suffer and pine for the rest of his days.  Or maybe you want him to do a Romeo...

I'm sorry, I wouldn't want him to suffer again not knowing how Shepard felt and that she wanted him to move on.  I would definitely have left a  letter with someone to send him if we didn't come back, that is for sure.

Sending him a letter in case of your death isn't the same as replying to the Horizon email. I'm all for that one.  Hand it to Liara or Wrex with the instructions to pass it on in case you don't come back.

Replying to the email to give him hope in an effort to "patch things up," just strikes me as cruel.

I don't think it matters what he knows about the suicide mission.   The idea is that in responding to grief, we're all different. Some might well find a great deal of comfort in a letter and even if Kaidan doesn't know,  I can see him appreciating it that Shep thought of him before the end, particularly given his response to her on Horizon.

At the same time, as I said earlier, I agree that we tend to view these characters through the lens of our own experiences.  So it seems to me that there really can't be a definitive answer here. Posted Image

Guess it depends upon how the email is worded.  For example, I can't see Tris sending him an email that provides hope without being honest about her chances of returning from her mission.

Like Star said, we all have different interpretations of Horizon, and Kaidan.

One of Alexis's biggest flaws is that she does not want to be a burden, to anyone. When Anderson reminds her how hard her death was on Kaidan, she just can't think of anything that she could possibly say to him that could diminish the impact of her death a second time.
