My Shepards wouldn't have been able to write such a heartfelt letter, not knowing what to say when they might have been all set to die on him again. I can see it going either way for him, either being a great comfort to have, or painful to realize he'd lost her, especially after completely blowing their last encounter.
(So yes, agreeing w/Sia, there's no right or wrong.)
@Jade: It is a beautiful, eloquent, gorgeous, heartfelt letter. Ella is jealous... she's not that articulate. She just shoots things. Or jumps them. ^_~

I don't think he's going to tell you.
Anyone think Kaidan ever contacted Liara for any information at some point? Before or after he saw Sheps?

Like Star said, we all have different interpretations of Horizon, and Kaidan.
One of Alexis's biggest flaws is that she does not want to be a burden, to anyone. When Anderson reminds her how hard her death was on Kaidan, she just can't think of anything that she could possibly say to him that could diminish the impact of her death a second time.
And that makes such absolute sense for the way you've written your character, Sapphy. Which reminds me....how's your next chapter of Everything's not Fine coming along? (I'm always hopeful!)

I look at it like this: It's a suicide mission ("Certain death for some, but fine for us," Kadian Quote -- FTW!), he's already lost you once. I don't see how a long drawn-out explanation would help him find closure if you failed to come back.
Yes, you're the indomitable, indefeatable Commander ****ing Shepard, but you're not infallible. Saren's outmanuvering you on Virmire was proof enough of that. And the Collectors have proven you can die.
If you died after such a heartfelt, loving, letter... I can only imagine it crushing him further.
That's why Avery's is vague and is only an attempt to remind him of what they once had. And Meghan doesn't reply at all. (She's the swift sharp ripping off of band aids school of emotional "healing.")
Yep, I'm jumping in... although perhaps I should be afraid to!
We do all have our own interpretations of characters as you say. And I agree that this is based upon our own experience.
I see Kaidan as grieving if Shep dies again but I don't see him as being crushed by a loving letter received before she goes.E veryone deals with grief differently. Many people would find great comfort in a heartfelt loving letter; would hang onto it, would cherish it as the last tangible expression from a loved one. In working with folks who are struggling with loss frequently the most difficult part is that the loss is unexpected, unanticipated. Unfinished business whether positive or negative now remains unfinished.
I think one of the most difficult aspects of Shep's initial death would be the shock; the attack on the Normandy was unexpected and traumatic. The outcome tragic. I tend to see Kaidan's response as being traumatic grief. This time however, he knows she's heading into the unknown, death is a distinct possibility and even though he would be grieving, a loving letter might just be a small comfort.
I think we're assuming he knows more about the suicide mission than he actually does.
I don't think it matters what he knows about the suicide mission. The idea is that in responding to grief, we're all different. Some might well find a great deal of comfort in a letter and even if Kaidan doesn't know, I can see him appreciating it that Shep thought of him before the end, particularly given his response to her on Horizon.
At the same time, as I said earlier, I agree that we tend to view these characters through the lens of our own experiences. So it seems to me that there really can't be a definitive answer here.
I would agree there.
I"m sure there was a partial selfish motive that she didn't want to die and him still hate her/think she betrayed him. but she also wouldn't have wanted him to block himself off from loving in the future for fear of being betrayed again.
Kimbri thought about just having some one deliver a message if she died, but considering that her last death wasn't final...

Considering the dialogue options we got on Horizon, if we could reply to him:
RE: About Horizon...
Hey Kaidan... How ya' doin' right now, man?
*shudder*
Good morning all
jade - the letter is really sweet. your shep seems more articulate than mine.
There are a number who thought that their Shep would rather work it out in person rather than in a letter. Again, stylistics. My Shep knows her propensity for putting her stupid foot in her mouth. And she has quite a temper. Written would be a better start for her. Also its harder for him to turn his back and walk away from a letter. And the letter doesn't care anyways--probably some self-protection as well.
@how everyone knows the e-mail: I know! Everyone and their brother can find the e-mail for this secret ship.
Thanks, Jilly. That's very sweet of you. I'm rather new to this writing thing. So thank you.Jilly:
I had Joker sneaking emails in and out, since I had no idea how everyone else tracked Shepard's email down. (shameless self-promotion: *points at fic links in sig*read the letter games!)
My Shepards wouldn't have been able to write such a heartfelt letter, not knowing what to say when they might have been all set to die on him again. @Jade: It is a beautiful, eloquent, gorgeous, heartfelt letter. Ella is jealous... she's not that articulate. She just shoots things. Or jumps them. ^_~
And part of the point was for him to know that he didn't really blow it on Horizon. She understands and takes her part of the responsibility for it. And that he made it up to her with the letter.
I forget, Jilly--what class is Ella (and the other Shepards on tonight)? The preferred style of combat probably has something to say about their overall character style of dealing with things.
Kimbri is an Adept. She she prefers solving things from a distance and coordinating attacks rather than rushing in. When she does rush in without thinking, its a mistake. She's down relatively quickly.

LOL! I wondered how Shepard was going to finance the Normandy and her crew after telling TIM off. Joker provided the funds that way. LOL!

Catherine, my infiltrator, is all about taking her time and researching the situation, etc. She was always rather manipulative, telling people what they wanted to hear rather than making emotional connections, until Kaidan somehow snuck under her guard, and thus he /was/ her emotional center, so she was too distraught by her resurrection and the fight on Horizon to plan out any sort of response at all.

re shepard's email - I have no idea how everyone and their dog in the galaxy has it. I still think that either Miranda or Kelly are not doing a very good job of filtering her mail, given that one or both of them would be checking it. I still don't understand why they let Kaidan's email through to her at all.

EDIT: sorry, Jilly answer this while I was posting it.
Crazy. insane. in your face. suicidal. You'll probably get yourself killed many times by charging right into bad guys. The shotgun, as much as I wasn't a shotgun person at first, I love it now.
I finished fights a lot faster than I did with my infiltrator, but I still love playing as that too.

And Vanguard is biotic/combat oriented, designed for close quarters/charge in and shoot them with your shotgun kinda players. I am actually no good at playing them, cause I always hit the wrong button and fail to hit things, but it's crazy fun anyways.
