Can someone give a defense for Kaidan's letter since this Femshep is getting pushed to 30 and staying with Kaidan. but his email is cringe worthy and bearable at the same time. Seriously though it made me want to facepalm so many times about well 20% in.

Defense as in explanation or defense as in rebuttle?

Edit: Kaidan!

@Giggles: His email is a masterpiece of conflicted emotions. He's attempting to be honest, while giving Shepard a way out in case he totally ruined things by losing his temper on Horizon, while also attempting to let her know how sorry he is in case she is, inexplicably in his opinion, still willing to give him a chance. I very much get the feeling from the email that he's sure he's lost her, again, and this time because he couldn't believe she was back from the dead when she suddenly appeared in front of him, so he's blaming himself entirely.
Or that's my take on the email. I actually find it much more difficult to deal with than the actual Horizon scene. Unlike Ashley's email, which has a much more basic "I miss you Skipper, even if we're totally screwed up" message. imho, ymmv, etc. etc.

I like Kaidan both as a friend and a LI for my Sheps but his email left me feeling like it was blaring out a big MAYBE.

am i the only one who LOVED the email???

i LOVED it. i just kept reading and re-reading it going omg, this writing is so awesome! it sooo neutral! it's like they made it as totally neutral as possible. you can read in a TON into it. kaidan left and doesn't care, kaidan is trying not to care but does.

me, i take it that the man is completely in love with shep still, but devastated and not thinking straight. but then i can also see it going other ways. like so much of the writing on them, depending on how you played shep, you can take kaidan's reaction totally differently. so i loved it for that reason. it puts the ball in shep's court and is so beautiful and tragic and hurt and hopeful all at once.

the only thing i didn't like is that YOU CAN'T REPLY!!!!  :crying:

oh, and i have a chapter with the email coming soon. very soon. and...well, it won't be the topic then, but it is coming and i had fun with it.  just...i lvoe the email

I'm with Jilly on the email. I thought it was typical Kaidan. He's leaving himself and Shepard a way out, hesitant because he's trying not to get hurt again, but showing he still cares by telling her to be careful. He's not sure what to believe and he's leaving the first move up to Shepard if she wants to talk. Which is why it peeved me that we couldn't send a reply, lol

Ending it with a maybe was a:

Kinda moment

But yes Kaidan did shine through very well in it. I have two who stayed loyal, but one who couldnt stand that he called her a brain washed traitor, didnt believe her, and ended it with a maybe. RPing it was fun but Horizon does smart.

such a dork, but RPer that i am, i had shep read it EVERY time i logged into the game, and only archived it prior to going through the relay. i like to think she did that as she gazed at the pic....and finally figured out how to write a reply

I have mixed emotions about his e-mail. I know he's just being honest (drinks with the doctor) and leaving a way out, it still hurt that he couldn't just come out and say "I love you, I need you, let's get back together." After Ilos, you would think he would've gotten rid of the whole "always leave a way out" thing.

He all but watched Shepard die. He spent two years believing Shepard was dead and tried to move on with less than sterling success. He starts to hear that Shepard is still alive, but she has made no effort to contact him. Then he starts to hear she is working with Cerberus. When he finally has visual proof that Shepard is alive...it's with Cerberus agents at her back.

Thanks to stupidly insipid dialog options, none of this gets resolved.

From Shepard's POV, your mixed emotions are spot on. From Kaidan's POV, so are his.

Ok, to clarify, I do not think in even the slightest way Kaidan wants a way out. I think they purposefully made the email vague so the player could read into it, and what I read into is that he thinks he completely ruined any chance at a reconciliation by not listening to Shepard on Horizon. I think he desperately wants one, but is so convinced that she will never forgive him, that he doesn't want to make it any harder on her, so he doesn't say so.

It is a masterfully done email, but requires the input of the player to get anything out of it, which is necessary for a game, but occasionally a bit limiting/disappointing when something more specific is desired. *shrugs* If that makes any more sense than my last three attempts to articulate anything today, I will be pleasantly surprised.

eta:  And also, he's much more forgiving in that email than I think I would be, as I doubt I'd believe the whole 'brought back from the dead and stuck working with bad guys' line, because it's patently ridiculous.  People don't come back from the dead, and if you have your own ship, why the heck don't you go fly to visit friendly not-evil people?  I am constantly surprised, in ME2, how many people just go "Oh Shepard, OK, rather than reacting in a manner more in keeping with being faced with the horribly impossible.

Heh.  From the way I RP'ed her in ME1, ME2 Shepard was a brain-washed traitor who wasn't to be believed.  In fact, had the situation been reversed (with Kaidan back from the dead, working for Cerberus to stop the Collectors in inexplicably in Terminus space), she probably would have tried to kill Kaidan and his squad.  <_<

Fortunately, the situation was not reversed.  ^_^

I loved Kaidan's email. It fits his character completely, just like Sage, Jilly, and Jaer have all said. (And better than I could at the moment.)

And for me, the email hurt worse than Horizon (even though I too left the email in the unread section). Only because the email does do what Kaidan would do, leave a way out for both of them.

kaidan's email was sincere and sentimental reminding my femshep why she fell for him in the first place. he's leaving her a way out in case she felt rejected and wanted to move on. essentially letting her decide what course to take.

i loved loved loved the email(!!!) save being unable to reply. yes, including the maybe. and i had no problem with the brainwashed traitor part and him not believing her because i was saying the same thing to my femshep.

I'm another one who liked the email. I also agree though that it's vague enough to let the player interpret what they want out of it. Still though it's the one email that never gets checked as 'read'.

I agree with Jilly here.

I LOVED his e-mail.  Kimbri would go back and read it every so often when she was missing him.  Don't look at the words themselves necessarily.  Feel what Kaidan is expressing.  He just lays bear everything that he's feeling. Its unusual for him to be so open and honest, so it makes it all the more special.  The ending line, like Jilly said, is him leaving his trademark "way out."  I also think he doesn't want to place too much hope in her return yet--in case she dies again or in case she rejects him.  So he fumbles a little on the parting lines.  I can't blame the poor guy.  He's been through so much.

Kaidan's mail is just... Kaidan and I completely agree with siriusrambles that it is a good reminder of what makes him such a great guy. I also don't think that he so much leaves himself a way out in that mail but rather offers the exclusive right to decide how to continue to Shepard - which is typical for him as well.
Additionally, I never had much of a problem that he went out with the doctor. In a way I felt horribly guilty that the reappearance of Shepard crushed all his attempts to recover from the loss.
As gamer, I totally understood his reaction on Horizon as well and I also thought that his role was actually nicely done, displaying a certain change in him.

Now to get it all together, I complained before about being incapable of responding to any mails that Shepard receives (especially compared to Alpha Protocol) but after accepting it, I'm hoping that we'll get the all desired satisfaction in ME 3.
Kaidan will be there, he will be the lovable man that Shepard fell for and he will never leave her side again - end of story! *you better listen BW*

Sorry for typos - I just rediscovered my taste for mead!
*scans for Night* You still here, girl?

You need the Kaidan translation.  The phrase you asked for is there.  But it is in Kaidanese:  "Do you even remember that night before Ilos? That night meant everything to me... maybe it meant as much to you."  Also "I couldn't bear it if I lost you again."

ME2 has so many scenes, and plot holes that scream DDDDDDDDDDDUUUUUUUUUUURRRRR..

I was hoping for a good game but we got a GOW clone that has the RPG elements, of well MW2. We cant respond to emails, or do anything meanigful. If three is like this as well I will be sad.

Not to be a downer but that email was sad at one time, yet I dont know, yet maybe, and with some geee way to go Dr. Love just called the woman I loved every name in the book. Has its strong points but seriosuly its a bioware plot hammer clearly, so that moving on or into the arms of the better romances (charachters wise they are great, content wise no) wont be seen as evil.

Kaidan's email is Kaidan. Horizon and his letter are written in such a way that you can justify moving on or not in a sense. Sucks since Shep was awake for what, a couple weeks?

I took Kaidan's email as "when you're done with this mission, come find me!" So when I finished I set course for the Citadel looking for him, asked Anderson, went to see if I could land on Horizon again, etc. So bummed he wasn't waiting for me. Also, when exploring Horizon did anyone else check every corner to find Kaidan's living quarters? I kept checking to see if I could find a pic of me by his bedside or something. Wish they had done something like that.

Agreed - though I would have preferred to see Ken and Gabby finally getting things going.
Besides that, I was fond of Gardner, guess that's why he keeps returning in my ff - heh. It amused me that he was the only one who realized that his 'mission' was by no way as important as saving the world.

I've played plenty of shooters and where it does have those elements, it is more than just that. It's the middle story too. There was plenty of foreshadowing in the game with the sun aging faster than it should, the geth and the quarians, the krogan and the genophage, the "harbinger of your destiny" thing going down, keeping or blowing the base, rachni, even the shadow broker.

I do think though, Mass Effect 1... presented the plot better. Talking to Sov and Vigil and just figuring out what was going on generally felt more powerful than say, the first time I went into the Reaper. It took me a while to figure out that I was actually in it, and even then it didn't feel anything special besides "Oh, damn." Was cool to see what they looked like on the inside though.

Another thing was when you find out what really happened to the Protheans...I felt like I already knew they were the Collectors without having to be told, but that's myself.
I think they already said 3 will "bring more RPG elements back". They'll probably keep the shooter part, but Mass Effect probably got a lot more customers by marketing the shooer aspect and well, they're out to make money.
