I just read what I missed before I looked at the last page here and it seems like it has cooled down since then.

I keep trying to think of some funny bit I can write and post because I use humor to combat stress, but nothing is coming. My muse has died, which is a bit of a pain, since I had plans for her.
Also, I would like to apologize in advance if I came off as sounding like anyone's mother.

No you didn't, it was a very thoughtful and sensible post Jaer. :)

But using the words "cheesy and sleazy" ARE labels, Star. And negative ones.

If you don't like them, you don't like them. Say WHY. Give examples and reasons. Throwing a label on them is attacking them and their romancers.

I dislike Jacob's Romance (and, frankly, character) because femShep talks to him like a drunken cheerleader on prom night and during the romance, he talks about "button pushing," as if Shep is already (****-)teasing him, and when he is dumped he pulls emotional blackmail on her. And if you dump him for Garrus or Thane he actually calls them by derogatory slurs. That's an example.

"Jacob is sleazy," is combative and indefensible.

Whoa, what does Jacob call Garrus and Thane? I don't think I ever saw or read that anywhere.

I think the most important thing is never to make things personal. I think it's great to critique characters, and not the fans themselves. I haven't actually seen much (if at all) insults towards fans of characters here in this thread, which is good. I can understand why some people may be annoyed if a character they like gets bashed though.

He calls Garrus a "cuttlebone" and I think he says something about Thane having "big, sad eyes".

Garrus - "Cuttlebone" (which I imagine is a racial slur)

Thane - Jacob mentions something about Drell eyes, IIRC.

Also, if you persist in trying to help him with his problems, he dumps you and tells you to go talk to Thane or Garrus instead. Aftewards Jacob doesn't want to talk to you anymore.

You know when someone comes in here and says something bad about Kaidan we bombard them with pictures and call troll but we were always respectful.

I think we need to get that back.. Just be respectful of others opinions. I don't think that is too much to ask.  I went to write a little and I came back and I couldn't believe my eyes.

Come on people we are friends all loyal to the man standing here.  Lets move on and enjoy our friendships...

please.

I mean really, Biotic God ... right!!

Thanks, Batteries, Night and Jenova!!

I was just looking at Comic Con costumes on another thread and will confess to wanting to see any ME costumes represented...a femSpartan from Halo was pretty sweet...but I can't decide if it would be good or bad to see a Kaidan Alenko cosplay.

Gosh it feels so weird to hold a pencil and draw after so many weeks of not drawing anything. It feels like I'm not even holding it right.

And glowy.... MMMM....

OK, not to bring this back up but having just arrived I have to compliment you all...

On almost any other thread if there was some sort of discussion over differences I would just end up leaving and ignoring it, because it can get super ugly..fast.

Though with valid points, and how most of us choose to role-play our Sheps, so can get pretty personal... We can still keep it civil and be friends in the end.

THANKS for keeping it a safe environment for discussions in the future and making everyone feel welcome. It really is awesome!

Now look back into his eyes...MMMM

ME cosplay would be cool.  I'd love to have had time/energy to have made ACU's for a con we're going to.  But I think I'll just make a black shirt with the N7 logo on it instead.

First -- apologies for the wall of words.

I'd like to point out that I rarely make statements about the characters or the romances and I think that if one were to search back through the thread (not that I'm suggesting anyone truly cares to do so!) you won't find that I've involved myself much if at all in such discussions or used those kinds of words.

It seems to me as if suddenly I'm being identified as having made the original statement about cheese when in fact, all I've done is suggest that the original poster has the right to express her opinion regardless of whether or not I agree with it.  Just as I feel that each of you has the right to your opinions and feelings.

My original point was to encourage understanding all around. I'm also for being able to express our differences. I don't agree with the statement that using a label to describe one's reaction to a romance is a  necessarily a reflection on those who do enjoy the romance. To me it just seems like a statement of difference. I honestly don't care whether one person romances someone other than Kaidan. I choose not to do so but that's simply a personal choice, not a reflection of my opinion on others. What does concern me is when others start to respond with "you" statements. That's when things tend to get personal.

"Jacob is sleazy" is a statement as is "The romances are cheezy and sleazy."  These are opinions. Yes, they can be combative if those reading them choose to make them so, but they don't have to be.  I tend to look at the underlying message which to me would simply be: the person making this statement feels strongly about it.  Since s/he gave no reasons for their thinking then there's truly nothing to discuss.  Ergo, I won't respond and it means nothing more than that.

I like many of the characters as colleagues.  I like none of the alternerate romances.  They all feel somewhat forced, some feel awkward to me and others make me cringe.  Yes, I''m using labels.  I'm also making statements of my own personal feelings about the characters. They are not statements about others or how others feel. They are not intended to reflect on anyone in any way.  And that's what I would hope to encourage.

Offering reasons for one's dislike or discomfort is great, but again, such reasons are personal and so all we can do is offer our own rationale. And combats can and do start over "reasons" since such reasons are often personal.  And perhaps that's how we should be stating these things -- if someone feels a romance is awesome or cheesy then the statement should be "I feel the romance is cheesy" and I would hope it could be accepted as simply that person's feelings without personalization or offense taken.

So I hope my response will be perceived in the spirit intended. You may not agree with me but then again, the point is tolerance, is it not?
