It's frustrating because they don't seem to have assigned writers for each character.  So, no writers get too attached at any one time.  Seems to be an odd way to go about it.  TVs and movies and other games don't do it that way...

Exactly. And that's how we can have Horizon happen which was OOC for both Shepard and Kaidan. And that's how we can have Ash say the line, "I'm not a big fan of aliens either..." The writers don't even know their own characters, and that's pathetic.

I loved Sky.

*ahem*

Since I'm currently starving, I'm going back to the food.... Kaidan and Biotic Shep at an all you can eat buffet just strikes me as funny.   Didn't someone write a fic with that?  Was it Jo or Fort?

It was Jo.

I was on the old forums and started the old Kaidan love thread.

There was a lot of hate back there. The forums were a smaller place and those that mentioned liking Kaidan were immediately shot down and trolled. Then there were others that were neutral to him and didn't bother discussing him. But everyone knew everyone too which is something you don't get here.

Honestly, I think that advertising the KAST and the KAAS in fanfic and fanart has helped everyone find a place to talk about Kaidan. Still, it's difficult to tell how many fans Kaidan really has vs other characters.

fort, the founding uh...father? sister? of the kaidan love. :)

I remeber that, I joind on those pretty late, but the Kaidan thread there had just got going when I signed up there. So it's difficult to tell, yes. But if you judge by sheer number of posts in these threads vs. all other characters, Kaidan is 2nd behind Tali! So in this community, I think i would definitely call Kaidan a "fan favorite."  (I just searched all the char. support threads. )

I usually avoided such threads on the old boards, because they always seemed get trolled by people flaming Kaidan.

Exactly. And I personally don't trust the devs to deliver well on this promise because they've been full of doublespeak since ME2 was announced.

I'm hoping there are more fans out there that we just don't know about. I mean, I only stumbled upon this place recently. Who knows, there could be many more Kaidan fans out there who just don't post here...

I don't have a top of page Kaidan pic :(

Hello!!

My first post....Posted Image

I love Kaidan, a lot!Posted Image

xoxo

hi *waves*

@ fort: yes, i think it would be very good for chars to get assigned a writer FOR GOOD. that would make much sense. i am surprised to hear they do not. i mean, if someone leaves, fine, but surely pass on the love, right?

@ jade: eye thing - i love that. is part of why kyrie's new eye is the right one (hehe)

@...whatever: i tend to avoid the forums when a new game comes out. i sadly found out about demon babies and it ruined DA:O for me - though getting to that without warning would have ruined it too. just...hated that.

anyhow, i stay away from forums when major plot is hatching. i want to see it/form my own opinion first. so i'll probably go awol when the liara dlc comes in, then go WAY awol when me3 rolls around. i just like to get my own take on everything, no spoilers if i can manage it, then come later and chat about it. :D

Yes, the carth references were esspecially irritating, I havent played other bioware games so I didnt even know who that character was. If people really didnt like Kaidan because of a voice association thats kinda silly. And I really never got the whiny? he only talked about himself when you pushed, and if you kept going he wouldnt he say something along the lines of no needing to be fixed? thats hes dealt with his past? Hes like Jacob except Jacob doesnt actually allow you to get to know him atleast in my opinion in that he just doesnt want to talk about what bugs him at all. The only thing I would say that was a bit annoying at Kaidan was that he came across as passive to me, but I guess it was also endearing again to me =)

Just to mention going OT but with Jacob its like they tried to make him a kaidan without all the faults i.e whining and passive etc except they werent faults, they were just exxagerated by the people that didnt like him. hence why I think Jacob is a fail to most people. But anyway

Kaidan was the first video game love interest I was at all interested in; and a screenshot of him and Joker with a caption saying that he was FemShep's love interest was why I bought the first game at all.  I had had no interest in what looked like a sci-fi shooter where you could only play as a dude, since I'm a diehard traditional Western Fantasy RPG fan.  So while I know that it doesn't matter to everyone, it matters to me.

And feeling like I have to defend the Horizon scene almost every day in this thread gets so old.  Why do we have to do it at all?  There were many ways in which the Virmire Survivor could have been written out of the main plot of this game, without making them into even MORE of a target of hate and derision.

Why am I more invested emotionally in a character than the people who are writing him?  It's frustrating and depressing.  Which is why part of me wants to quit caring now, before I get more disappointed when ME3 comes out.

i'm the same regarding kaidan.  i had always been single in games prior.  he seriously is the perfect guy as far as i'm concerned.  i'd go on but my job is interferring.

i vote to bury the horizon discussion.  it usually devolves into something i want no part of.

Kaidan, is one of the most paragon male Li's I have seen in a Bw game, and that is refreshing. Others had good hearts, but they each had some moral gray issue with them. I also love Kaidan's personality, probably the best of the Male Li's . . .

As for Horizon . . . Kaidan is very principled, and in reality, I can see him shirking Shep off like that, but I also see Shepard actually trying to explain the actual scenario, (Oh, and greeting Shep with more than a hug >_>) rather than impassively watching the scene unfold, as if Shep is not actually in control.

This is true.  He's just a good person.  He always tries to do the right, moral thing.  He tries to be unbiased by his own history as well.  I don't think there's another squadmate like that--not even Tali.
And he never asks much of anything from Shepard.  Just her honesty in dealing with him.  No special loyalty missions to win his trust.  He cares for Shepard (in a romantic or non-romantic way) for who Shepard is.

I can still understand Kaidan better on Horizon.  You can see the emotions playing across his face and the moment when he snaps due to Shepard's deadpan responses to him.  I know there are a number of us here who felt rather hamstrung by the awful dialogue/interaction choices.

You know what is needed in that scene?  One of those Paragon/Renegade trigger options to either grab him and kiss him or to slap him and make him listen to you either way.  Posted Image

Yeah you know I'm really wondering where all this Kaidan love has come from. =S on the old boards I never got to talk about kaidan b/c there was never any thread or enough people interested. Its weird how hes getting so much love since Me2. Like what changed?

Well, I didn't play ME1 until June.  I finally played KOTOR this past winter.  Loved it.  I got into DA because of wanting to know more how BW does games in preparation for TOR next year.  Loved DA.  My hubby and I were fighting over the PS3 and I wanted a similar game.  So I got an Xbox and a friend gave me ME1 (he didn't like it--well, he's not getting it back now.  Posted Image)
So perhaps there is a part of the population that is just discovering the game due enjoying DA and getting another BW title.  Alistair fans might transition to Kaidan better?  I liked Alistair, but Kaidan is way more appealing in many ways.  Hence I am here every day and never have been to the DA threads.

I found you all here, actually, through your fanart and through YouTube.  Finally there were female gamers!  I was on IGN's boards and was frustrated about always being straffed when saying I liked Kaidan.

And welcome LIlliCat!

I love Al, but not his fans.  Hence why I'm here.

The fact that I'm here is my husband's fault, anyway.  It's all his fault.  He got KOTOR and then ME1... and I made him get ME2 on the day it was released.

I think Kaidan says something along the lines of "I'm 32, Shepard.  You don't serve as long as I have without having come to terms with yourself."
Yeah.  That's really  whiny.  *rolls eyes*

And the VA associate what what pulled me to Kaidan in the first place--actually, to the game in part.  But Kaidan is not a Carth clone.  Heck, Sbarge does a great job in making the voices different.  Kaidan is pitched much lower.  And their personalities aren't close.

Perhaps on KAAS--so that you wouldn't get some jerkoff that just trolls and throws in spoilers for the heck of it.

There are two camps:

One that is royally pissed at Kaidan about Horizon.
The other is pissed at Shepard and agrees with Kaidan.

These are like oil and water and it ends up devolving into an argument that just breeds animosity.

It devolves into an argument almost always.

I don't think not talking about it ever again is a good idea, but a moratorium for the next 6 months wouldn't be bad.  Heck, this is the internet... 6 months is like... 200 years in people years.

Because it usually turns into something ugly.
I like Horizon for what it is, romance or not, trying to throw characters to the curb or not. It'd be safe to say most of my opinions are in the minority here, so I tend to not get ito it too much,

Was a lurker on the old board because I didn't want to register. The community was large and pretty established at that point. Easier to just lurk and let others get flamed instead. =p I was already registered here because of Dragon Age and when they merged the ME forums here, it was easy for me to start participating. Unfortunately I tend to have tunnel vision so whatever game I'm playing, I spend more time in that forum. I'm replaying my ME games and neglecting the DA forums while I'm getting caught up on all the nifty ME2 DLCs I missed in the meantime. ;)

My first Bioware game was actually Dragon Age due to my husband purchasing it as a game he thought we'd both be interested in. I humored him by installing it and giving it a whirl, but I was floored at how much of a different gaming experience it was. Game romances were completely new to me and I got drawn in more than I expected. However (as not to spoil anything) I was pretty unhappy with the outcome of my preferred romance in DAO and I found a thread with posters comparing Kaidan to the DAO love interests. When it got mentioned that while Kaidan wasn't as interactive as the DAO characters, it was very sweet and devoted. So I bought the game and I don't know, I just felt more alive playing Mass Effect and I really enjoyed how simple and uncomplicated the Kaidan romance was. I want to play a game where I beat the bad guys and win the guy in the end. Mass Effect filled that need. ME2 got me stoked for more because Kaidan expressed more of his feelings and it really set the tension for ME3. Can you just imagine the kind of make-up sex that would be coming once their paths cross again and the air gets cleared? (Theoretically speaking!) I'm really looking forward to ending on a high note with ME3. I really hope they don't take a page out of DA's book by inserting tragedy or forcing Shepard to go out in a blaze of glory to save everyone. Y'know?
